Must buys for autumn wardrobe?

Summer is over, I reckon...so what are the essential colours and styles for autumn? I would quite like to buy a new coat or jacket, but am currently 32 weeks pregnant so would be buying it for post late September when I think I will still be a size 14...however, if I wait until then, all the good ones will have gone.

Any other suggestions for good (and in my case, necessarily flattering) buys for the up to Christmas period?

colours are:

navy
caramel/ camel/ toffee/ greige
jewel tones/ scarlet
black, quelle surprise

I'm planning on a navy wool coat with a slight military feel, mid-thigh or so in length.

When are you due? I had dc3 last Sept and well remember the pain of choosing an AW wardrobe whilst taking into consideration bfing and added bulk.

NoahAndTheWhale · 17/08/2010 23:00

My essentials are a pair of boots as old ones have actually fallen apart and some tights. Am hoping last year's coat will be OK again this year although may need a button sewing back on.

LadyThompson · 17/08/2010 23:03

Thanks, LetThem. I like navy and the caramel/toffee tones but jewel colours are quite hard to wear, I think (I'm quite blonde and think they are easier for brunettes).

I'm due twentysomething of Sept. I haven't put on a stack of weight this time, but I was unfortunately still a rather buxom size 14 after having my first DD, who was only just over 1 when I conceived DC2. So I am expecting to look rather lumpy right up until Christmas.

I like to wear jeans on the whole, also tailored shirts, and my thighs are my worst feature. However, I'd quite like to find some different trousers for a a change.

my hot autumn buys will be a Camel Cape, dark rinse jeans, dark brown lace up ankle or knee boots & an oversize envelope clutch....

oohhh, my lust list could go on...Grin

LadyThompson · 18/08/2010 10:42

Mmm, that all sounds lovely. But what are dark rinse jeans? And what style of jeans?

Millie1 · 18/08/2010 14:00

Hmmm ... I would love ...

New jacket for everyday wear (current model is at least 5 yrs old)
Boots - midcalf and also something with heels for wearing with longer jeans
A cardigan or two
A scarf or two
Some l'sleeved tops for layering, think Gap (have just packed up loads to return to Boden)
Oh - new jeans, a 'good' pair - probably skinnies as last year's will be too tight as I've put on a few pounds Grin
And, forgot - a dress (thinking about Boden printed cord number) and a wool tunic.

It's quite a list. I won't get everything on it but never mind, it's nice to dream!!

thislittlesisterlola · 18/08/2010 14:15

I need some more long big v neck jumpers- any ideas where from? I am thinking about a beige mac- size ten hourglass with d size norks- any suggestions. Is green in? i have a fab pea green wool coat i want to wear.

thislittlesisterlola · 18/08/2010 14:17

oh i love autumn winter clothes :)

DorotheaPlenticlew · 18/08/2010 14:19

I want this tunic (but cannot afford it at all so no chance)

AbsOfCroissant · 18/08/2010 14:21

I have held off for as long as I can, but as summer seems to have given up, I'll join in.

I have decided to really limit what I buy this year (who am I kidding ...), so would like to get:

  • a fabulous new coat, as old one is on last legs
  • boots suitable for work, preferably with a heel (not too much)
  • skirt
  • cashmere hoodie. This last one will be tough I reckon.
Alouiseg · 18/08/2010 14:21

I need a kick up the arse to stop me wearing jeans every day, it's only august and I'm wearing my new Uggs (Kensington, so fine).

I wear jeans every bloody day unless I'm going out. What are the alternatives for a sahm with a muddy dog walking habit?

Camel cape sounds interesting.

LadyThompson · 18/08/2010 14:38

I need someone to point me in direction of what jeans best to buy. I have all styles and colours but have lost my way a bit with them.

H&M are always good for on trend coats at a reasonable price but you need to go as soon as they come in as they fly off the shelves. Also the quality can be iffy.

Boots I do want, but just not sure which ones to buy (biffing calves as mentioned above).

I would like some good trousers that could be dressed up or down...

What style knitwear is in for this season, anyone know?

OP posts:
KristinaM · 18/08/2010 15:33

chunky knits i believe

LynetteScavo · 18/08/2010 15:35

greige ? what colour is that? Iv'e never heard of it! Is it a cross between beige and grey? Confused

employmentlawquery · 18/08/2010 18:01

I suit clear colours and do not like muddy ones, and have been a bit baffled by all the apparent enthusiasm for grey over the past year (draining for most people surely), also nude (= beige), camel (=beige) and tan (= beige). Am further puzzled why people label clothes as "mouse" (= beige and with unpleasant rodent associations). I could go on (taupe= beige, oatmeal= beige) but I will stp here.

Maryqueenofchocs · 18/08/2010 19:15

oooh, I am loving that cape but in the grey colour. I worry that it will make someone who is a size 16-18 look mahossive though. What do you think?

Noted about the dark wash jeans. Saw some in debenhams and they do look good. There are some lovely heels in M&S at the mo too!

JamInMyWellies · 18/08/2010 21:33

LadyT ello!

Try celtic sheepskin for nice knits. I bought a couple of them last yr and they are lovely. They do a nice deep V boyfriend style great for post baby squidgyness.

Would look good with straight leg jeans try Topshop Martha then some nice boots.

Funk it up with gorge scarf and jewels for up town visits.

Perfect for your new hoose in the country. Just add a barbour for country walks and a navy military style coat for smarter days.

tefal · 18/08/2010 21:50

God - step away from the puter Tefal...that jersey is gorgeous! How do I smuggle that into the house without hubby noticing?

LadyThompson · 19/08/2010 10:15

Thanks for all the suggestions, keep 'em coming. I liked the jeans, Mary, and I loved the sweater, our Jam.
