Stoptober... Anyone?

elementofsurprise · 25/09/2015 14:26

Thought a support/distraction thread might be a good idea?

I'm trying to switch to vaping... have lovely coffee flavoured liquid. Also vape inside but smoke outside - as the nights are drawing in and getting colder it really feels like time to start vaping only, inside in the warm! although may require a blizzard to actually drive me inside away from the ciggies

Anyone else looking to take the first step of Stoptober? Smile

Hi Totally.. Welcome.
Do you intend to use any NRT or going cold turkey this time? I am on day 4 now which is the furthest I have made it during recent attempts. Yesterday was dry very hard but I have woken up feeling very positive and optimistic today.

Good luck everyone! Keep going.

Totallyoutoforder · 04/10/2015 08:35

Thank you Mooogles, I will try to stay away from patch, vape... And keep telling myself that I need to change medication and the new medication requires me to be non smoker. And also that I am free from drug. And can be happy without it.
I'd love to be on day 4, Mooogles.
Keep quitting everyone.

TuckingFablet · 04/10/2015 09:35

Hello all.
I did 3 days, then went out for a drink and caved but now on day two. I get cravings, but then I'm all like meh I can't be arsed. So weird. I've usually been driven crazy by the cravings and given in.
Well done everybody getting this far!

elementofsurprise · 04/10/2015 12:30

I've managed 40hrs so far... I'm kind of missing it but also don't want to smoke. Like it feels like there's a gap in my life, and every now and then I think "Oh, I'll sit down with a tea and ciggie" then remember I don't anymore.

I was using it as a reward system before ("I'll just do this then smoke") so I'm now very unproductive! Tea just doesn't have the same motivating factor! Also weeping a lot and mental health gone down the pan as posting history indicates... Part of me wants to want to smoke!

Sigh. It's all worth it in the end, yeh?

And well done everybody.

I found the Allen Carr book very repetitive, and actually there were points when I wanted to argue with him or look up scientific research for some of his claims! I would never have got past the first few pages if it had been a book about anything else.

However I opened my mind to accept everything at face value and patiently read through the repeated stuff. I guess that's the point. You have to let yourself be lured in and believe it. I read it in a day (no DC!) which I think helped.

Totally - I am staying away from vaping etc now as well. HF nothing yesterday not today so far. Today I feel fine, easiest day so far. Very mild cravings but as usual it will be the evening where I struggle.

Element, nearly 2 days, whoop whoop. Keep going, it will get easier and is so worth it. I am using an app to track how much money I am saving, health benefits etc... Find it quite motivating.

Totallyoutoforder · 04/10/2015 15:31

Only 20h without 1 fag, I keep having cravings. It helps to be with family, no temptation. When will I stop thinking that a fag would be nice with a coffee on the terrasse of the coffee shop in the sun and a newspaper ?

Totallyoutoforder · 04/10/2015 15:39

Element, well done in reading so fast, it took me forever to read it the second time, but I finished it this time.
Mooogles, which app do you use if you don't mind ms asking ?
DP has not said a word of support yet. I am a bit sad he does not see how hard it is. But hey, I have you lot ??

Mooogles · 04/10/2015 16:12

Hi totally, it's called Smoke Free, thought think there may have been more that one called that. It's logo etc is green and white. It's pretty basic but I like looking at money saved, hours smoke free etc..

Well, passed a 'test' today, met friends in pub garden, had wine, didn't smoke and actually, whilst I thought about smoking a lot while we were there, it wasn't that hard to resist. Progress SmileWine.

Tarrarra · 04/10/2015 17:01

This is my 4th attempt to give up. I am on day 4 and managing ok by vaping instead of smoking. It has been THE most stressful week anyway for lots of reasons, and I just feel like running away with a lighter and a packet of fags and chain smoking! But I won't. If I can do this now, then I know that I can continue forever. Hope everyone else if finding it easier :-) x

CalebHadToSplit · 04/10/2015 17:36

Well done everyone- you're all doing really well!

I'm on Day 4. Getting easier. The last time I quit I used Allen Carr and found it really helpful (lasted a year that time). I like the NHS Stoptober pack this year. My only gripe is the the emergency 'distraction ' activities on the back of the tear-off calendar are smoking-themed! I want to forget about it!

Totallyoutoforder · 04/10/2015 18:50

25h fag free ! DP said I seem much more peaceful this time. May it last. Really want to smoke right now. But got rid of every single Ciggie in the house.
Trying to focus on benefit : Today I save up £5, £40 a week, this could be an hour of HIIT.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 04/10/2015 19:01

You're all doing everso well SmileFlowers

Mooogles · 04/10/2015 22:10

Well done everyone! End of day 4 and feeling confident!

They say if you make it through the first week your chances of success are massively increased so keep going.. Smile

Totallyoutoforder · 05/10/2015 08:21

Mooogles ! This is amazing! Going out without giving in... This is real
Progress in deed.
39h smoke free, today is 1st day on my own, test day. Craving is less dominant, still thinking about it but not as if I could not think about something else....

Mooogles · 05/10/2015 10:40

Well done totally. Keep at it, you will feel so pleased that you did once you get another day under your belt!

I am at work today so is easy for me until 6pm.. But I am on day 5, hurrah! Definitely much easier now. The only thing is the insomnia.. I just couldn't last night, and night sweats too..

Totallyoutoforder · 05/10/2015 11:05

Mooogles, do you think insomnia, night sweats... could be linked to nicotine weaning ?
Since my post at 8.21, I kept myself busy, work at my desk but also house chores. I used to treat myself with a cig after I've dealt with a project or finished cooking..... Bedbugs chasing now, daughter woke up with bites on the back of her neck, none on body but prefer to be preventive.... Busy busy busy to not think about smoking.... 41h and counting.

Mooogles · 05/10/2015 14:14

I think the insomnia etc must be to do with nicotine withdrawal. Been doing some googling and is quite common..

Keeping busy is the trick I think. You are doing so well and just hang on to the thought that very soon it will get a bit easier and then a lot easier.

111 hours without smoking, £39 saved.. SmileShock

Welshmaenad · 05/10/2015 18:39

Heffalump, Mist eliquid spearmint is nice, give it a try.

You are all doing so well

elementofsurprise · 05/10/2015 19:47

Well done everyone! An hr off three days for me now... that's only about a fiver in baccy but meh.

Sort of missing the act of smoking - think investing in a clean vape pen and 0% liquid might be an idea. Is there such a thing/any recommendations?

OP posts:
Mooogles · 05/10/2015 19:56

Element, well done. DH has ordered me a 0% one for his vapestick so they def exist..

Welshmaenad · 05/10/2015 21:27

You can get 0mg liquids. Maybe a strong flavoured one would be good? I've just got some Heisenburg by vampire vape which is fantabulous.

Totallyoutoforder · 06/10/2015 00:04

The world of vape is an unknown universe to me !
DP has been kind of supportive. He is very amazed to find me so chilled.... Am I ? Not so sure

Mooogles · 06/10/2015 07:24

How are you doing today Totally?

I can't quite believe I have made it to day 6. I actually slept for a few hours last night so that is a great relief. Went to dinner at a friends last night. All non-smokers there and usually I would be in a hurry to leave to have a sneaky cigarette ... Instead I stayed and enjoyed the evening. So many good things about giving up the fags.

Good luck everyone, let's get through another day.

Tarrarra · 06/10/2015 09:16

Well done anyone who has got this far! Is anyone else suffering with mouth ulcers? I did a bit of a google, and it's saying that it can happen when you give up smoking. Bit of an annoyance, but I'm sure it won't last long.

I'm treating myself to a reflexology treatment this week, as I worked out I've saved over £45! Is anyone else thinking of a treat?
