Is there a stoptober thread? Has anyone been successful with this previously?

Hello all,

I'm really wanting to quit smoking and have signed up to stoptober.

Is anyone else doing it, or has anyone else done it successfully in previous years?

I don't know how it will go for me - I've never tried to quit before, but in all honestly I'm sick to death of smoking.

Looks like there's a Stoptober thread now! Wink

If it's the support aspect you're after, just keep posting here. There's plenty of people who have given up (or are still trying) using various methods so keep posting for advice, suggestions or just plain hand holding Smile

ClashCityRocker · 28/09/2014 09:55

Thanks. Smile

I've been gradually trying to cut down but like the idea of a 'firm target'.

I've tried vaping and I'm not sure it's for me - I end up with a sore throat. Going to keep one on hand for emergencies though.

That could well have been to do with the "pattern" you were vaping in. With a ciggie you light up, smoke the whole thing in 5-10 minutes with around 20-odd draws, then light the next in an hour or so. With vaping most of us find that it's best to take just a few puffs but much more frequently, say 3-4 puffs every 10 minutes. Many new vapers think they are vaping much more than they smoked, but because of a combination of this and the fact that nicotine is absorbed very differently means they aren't really.

Also, a fair number of new vapers find they do get a dry mouth or sore throat at first, just make sure you have plenty of liquids to hand & it passes off after a while Smile.

Another thing that might help you is a) counting the cigarettes you HAVEN'T smoked rather than those you have, and b) putting every penny you save by not smoking into a jar or something & watch how quickly it mounts up. Then use it to treat yourself to something nice Grin.

Stoptober thread is an excellent idea!

They have a website here, you can sign up for support materials.

Good luck!

Hi OP, good luck with Stoptober. I have been using a forum on the No Smoking Day website for support as well as an occasional look in this one and I have not smoked for 17 weeks now.

ClashCityRocker · 29/09/2014 18:07

Right, I'm going to dig out my e-cig then!

I think you're right, allergic I was smoking it like a full cig. Will give it another bash.

Was odd today not stopping at the shop for baccy.

bump So is anyone else doing this? I'm on day 2 of stopping and it's getting tough. I could use some company.

Numanoid · 30/09/2014 16:38

I didn't know about Stoptober but will have a look. I stopped yesterday (well, finished my (hopefully) last packet) and so far have had none today. Grin
I have an e-cig and it is amazing, I haven't even felt the need to buy cigarettes.

ClashCityRocker · 30/09/2014 22:22

I'm doing it! Last cigerette tonight, no more after that!

How are you finding it sollers?

Woohoo! Good luck everybody! Thanks

Dwerf · 01/10/2014 19:23

I ran out of tobacco today so I'm back on the ecigs for stoptober.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 01/10/2014 20:16

Yay Dwerf! Good luck Smile

Anon24 · 02/10/2014 18:39

I got an ecig on 18th sept. Finished the pack of cigs that night and started the ecig on 19th. Since then I have had 5 fags and that is only because people have offered out of habit and not realising I have took the cig and lit it without thinking! Today is the first time I have been offered a cig and refused!! Go me!!
Good luck to all trying to quit Smile xx

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 02/10/2014 18:44

Well done Anon, that's brilliant! Keep counting the ones you don't smoke, not the ones you do Smile

Numanoid · 03/10/2014 12:59

I signed up for Stoptober, not sure if it's of any use though. I finished my last packet on 29th September, so that's... 4 days without smoking if I keep it up for the rest of the day. :)
I've hardly felt the urge to smoke, but maybe that's a combination of the e-cig, not being a smoker for very long and not having that many per day when I did. Hmm

ClashCityRocker · 03/10/2014 21:01

Yup. I think e-cigs are the way to go.

First day was torture though.

I'm also not drinking for two weeks (on the LC boot camp) so that's helping.

I've been a bit headachey though and snappy.

Is this thread still going? And if so, can I join please? I'm giving up tomorrow. Was meant to be last week, but had a wedding this weekend and failed.. Wish me luck x

DazzleOfZebras · 06/10/2014 06:58

I'm on day 6 as of this morning, mostly cold turkey but I have an e-cig which I used in the first couple of evenings. Might get some 0% nicotine juice for it, but I really want to get the nicotine out of my system rather than prolong the withdrawal.

Worst thing for me at the moment is insomnia of all things, had some really broken nights sleep and want it all to pass soon.

flapinko Best of luck, it's really not as bad as I expected - just keep yourself distracted.

whojamaflip · 06/10/2014 07:03

Hi just wanted to say I quit in stoptober - 2 years tomorrow! Smile

Good luck to everyone - just take it one cig at a time.....

flapinko · 09/10/2014 09:41

Thanks Dazzle. I'm on Day 4 now. Not going too bad - I haven't resorted to the e-cig once, which I'm pleased about (although been eating toast and marmite like it's going outta fashion!) but tonight is my first night out, so that will be a test, I'm sure. The Stoptober texts/mails have told me NOT to drink any alcohol when going out in the first two weeks. Probably very sensible advice.... We shall see!
