Anyone fancy quitting smoking with me?

ThistleDoMeNicely · 01/08/2014 23:19

I will be having my last cigarette before bed tonight and I want it to be my last ever.

Reasons to quit:-

My daughter - I quite while pregnant and restarted for some stupid reason but I actually want to quit for her first and foremost. I want to be around for as much of her life as possible.

My Health - I'm 25 years old and I'm being sent to the hospital for an ultrasound because of ongoing issues where they think it could be PCOS but they have told me that some of my symptoms are in line with cervical cancer and will also be looking for tumours. I am also having to have various other tests at the GPs which include the most obvious for this type of screening, a smear.

Fitness - I'm unfit, I want to get fit and feel in order to do this I have to quit smoking.

Money - I am saving to visit friends in Australia and the money I would save would help in paying for this.

I have smoked for around 11 years and smoke on average 10 a day.

Anyone want to jump on this with me. I know it's going to be hard but it's something I am determined to do.

A great list of reasons. Just wanted to say good luck and you can do it! ! I gave up quite a few years ago. Best thing I ever did. Just remind yourself how much you hate smoking and all it entails. I hated the grip it had on me. And within weeks I felt sooo much better. Breathing was so much easier! And I felt so free and proud.
The thing that helped me was the nicotine inhaler. Only used it for a few days but it bridged that difficult initial period. Oh and eating lots of little snacky things too. And keeping busy.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 02/08/2014 09:12

Good luck Flowers

You can get apps that track how many you would have smoked and how much money you are saving. I bet there's one where you can put in a savings goal. Do a search for stop smoking app. Come and whinge here whenever the going gets tough, you'll get lots of support Smile

What method are you using?

ThistleDoMeNicely · 02/08/2014 10:30

I was planning on just going cold turkey but have been advised against it. Going to have a look at some of the NRT things in boots today.

I've been saying, I'll do it Monday, I'll do it next week, I'll do it... etc etc for too long and last night made the decision to bite the bullet. Thrown out all of my leftover cigarettes and lighters and have an app on my phone, so far saved £1.73. Got to start somewhere eh.

Great start! If you want to go cold turkey have you tried the Allen Carr book? It works for lots of people.

If you are considering NRT would you consider an ecig? A decent refillable one works out a lot cheaper and is generally more effective.

ThistleDoMeNicely · 02/08/2014 19:55

I don't want to do the ecig. I did try one and I didn't like it. I also don't want to be reliant on something so similar to a cigarette IYSWI.
Still going cold turkey and actually feeling ok.

Read the book, it didn't work for me Sad

I used patches and it was bearable and it did mean I kicked the putting something in your mouth habit

I didn't need them as long as it said on the packet either cut down patches

anyway good luck and keep going Grin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 02/08/2014 20:07

Nor me but it's always worth suggesting as I know it works for a lot of people.

Well done you, day one nearly over! Flowers

20 mins after stopping your blood pressure and heart rate return to normal, 8 hours after stopping the nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in blood reduce by half and oxygen levels return to normal. By tomorrow morning when you wake up the carbon monoxide will be eliminated from your body and your lungs will start to clear out mucus and other smoking debris (so expect a bit of a cough).

One other thing to look out for is gum health. Smoking masks gum problems and it's fairly common to get bleeding gums when you stop. Keep up with dental appointments and brush and floss well.

Blakey3166 · 02/08/2014 22:40

Hi ya, I'm happy to do it with you from Monday???

ThistleDoMeNicely · 03/08/2014 08:14

Absolutely join in Monday. Be nice to have someone doing it too to moan to when needed Grin

Start of day 2 for me. Found yesterday that some of the weirdest things were my triggers. So far so good this morning, no bad cravings yet.

Today has been tough but got through it. DD is now in bed so I'm in for the night so no chance I'll be caving this evening. Roll on day 3, feeling quite positive, doing better than I ever have going cold turkey.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 03/08/2014 20:11

Well done Thistle and good luck to you and to Blakey for tomorrow Flowers

Flywheel · 03/08/2014 20:33

I'll join you if that's ok.
I'm using an e cig. I didn't want too - seems too much like cheating, but I've tried and failed going cold turkey so many times. I had my last cig on Thursday. Surviving so far, but feeling a bit down to be honest.

ThistleDoMeNicely · 03/08/2014 20:40

Yey! Need someone else I the early stages. I've felt quite irritable today but trying to rein it in.

I just keep trying to focus on the why! What made you bite the bullet?

OP posts:
Flywheel · 03/08/2014 20:57

Similar to you really. For my kids. Also had a slight health scare, which turned out to be nothing much, but was a bit of a kick up the arse. I've also been running lately and would love to get a bit fitter. I attempt to give up all the time, but I'm really going for it this time.
I normally give in when I start to feel down and tell myself, next week will do. I'm determined to get past that stage this time.

Blakey3166 · 03/08/2014 21:37

Thistle- couldn't log in today- am starting day late:-( morning for me x

ThistleDoMeNicely · 04/08/2014 08:29

Good flywheel I'm sure it'll pass.

Let us know how you go today Blakey.

ThistleDoMeNicely · 04/08/2014 18:05

How have you both got on today?

OP posts:
Justpickone · 04/08/2014 21:55

Hi, I last had a cig Saturday lunchtime and have been vaping like mad ever since!
It's nice my hair still smells of shampoo...
I'm pondering splitting the savings with Macmillan.
As a motivational tool.
They were invaluable to my family, and I'm auctioning my wedding dress for the charity too.

Holing this will help me persevere...

ThistleDoMeNicely · 04/08/2014 22:10

Well done! The first few days are definitely the most difficult I think.

I've been feeling a lot better today actually. My poor wee girly said "you're smiley today Mummy". Must have been a proper grumpy cow the last few days

OP posts:
MazzR · 07/08/2014 13:33

Started today. Feel quite ok so far. Am using the ecig but with no nicotine, just for the habit really. Well done to everyone that's going so well.

KellyElly · 11/08/2014 15:37

I had my last one last night. I used the Max Kirsten hypnotherapy app. It has been surprisingly easy today - previous attempts have left me grumpy and climbing the walls! Maybe this NLP stuff really does work.

I am having the usual can't go to the loo issues I always get when I quit which usually makes me go back to smoking again, but not this time! Does anyone else get this?

sharron927 · 11/08/2014 20:14

I plan on quitting 'cold turkey' on Monday. I've been smoking 20 years, I've tried patches, zyban, champix, hypnosis, Alan Carr, e-cigs but no luck. I've got an exam on Wednesday and will hopefully be celebrating at the weekend so Monday is my quit date!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 11/08/2014 20:19

Good luck sharron, you can do it! How's day 1 going Kelly?

How's everyone else doing?

theendoftheendoftheend · 11/08/2014 20:21

Can I quit with you too please? I've been wanting to for months now. I tried Champix a couple of months ago but it turned me a little crazy. So, I'm thinking I'm going to try patches!

sharron927 · 11/08/2014 20:28

Yes we'll do it together! No more cigs after Sunday! X
