Hooray to getting our own space (within giving up smoking).

Flowers & Wine (gin) to MNHQ for giving us this space.

I'm hoping some of our most knowledgeable vapers are going to start threads about specific aspects of vaping.

My mouth is very dry though, is that normal? Or am I doing it wrong?

Raia · 13/05/2014 13:29

Dry mouth is totally normal Tantrums - I started drinking lots of water and my mouth is normal again now, but I had a bad case of vaper's tongue for a couple of weeks at the beginning!

srj52 · 13/05/2014 14:40

Hi I'm new to mumsnet and pretty new to vaping too. I have been reading your vaping threads and found them very interesting and encouraging. Some of the anti vaping posts had me gnashing my teeth though! I thought I would post my experiences re vaping as maybe they might be useful to anyone just starting out. I have been a light smoker on and off for years and even gave up for six years until I started again a couple of years ago. My kids don't know I smoked but it was getting harder to hide it eg 'why do you smell funny?'when I'd been out! Decided to stop for Lent as I felt a definite time frame/target would help. Knowing my weakest time is when I'm drinking with smoking friends, I bought an e lite one evening. I quite liked the taste and it satisfied the hand to mouth need. Feels balanced to have a drink in one hand and a 'fag' in the other! But they work out very costly. After research (obsessively!) I plumped for a Jacvapour kit which I loved - still do. Like their cartridges which you can also refill with eliquid. Have just bought a kanger evod kit which I like too although I think that will be for at home only and the jacvapours for nights out. Have had only one stinky since Feb and feel much healthier. I think the specialist vaping sites can be a bit intimidating and techie for newbies so having vaping threads on here is great!

magimedi · 13/05/2014 15:09

Lovely to hear from another vaper, srj & well done on the lack of stinkys!

Thanks for the nice words about all the threads, we (who have been vaping for some time) honestly say that NO question is to silly to ask & all questions are welcome.

It's a real minefield when you first start (I poured my first lot of juice straight through the mouthpiece onto the table!!) & some of the terminology can be baffling.

OP posts:
Cantabile · 13/05/2014 15:47

Hi, srj, and Congratulations!

The trouble with new things is that most people don't understand them, and a few automatically reject them. Unfortunately, it is this minority which tends to be most vocal. Furthermore, with all politicians doing little more than chasing votes these days, we end up with a situation where a brilliant improvement to our lives (everyone's, not just smokers') is banned just because those who shout loudest are the ones who get heard.

Shonajay · 13/05/2014 15:49

Thankyou congrats to you too! Did you see that caroline aherne has been diagnosed with lung cancer at aged 50? I shuddered reading that. Makes me so glad I've stopped x

SoleSource · 13/05/2014 18:18

Hello :)

My EGO GT battery reused to charge. I bought a new battery yesterday. That also refused to charge. I returned to the shop today and was given a new battery. Batch of faulty batteries apparently. Now have my e cig back and vaping lots of clouds. Bought new tank too.

How often do you change wicks (if you have them)?

I do not know how to change the wicks, I shall go back to the shop for a tutorial and buy some spare wicks.

Raia · 13/05/2014 18:35

I'm finding that my wicks/coils/atomiser heads/whatever-the-fucks last about ten to fourteen days, and i can extend their life a bit by washing and dry burning them. Dunno if this is average but at £2 a go (approx) it seems reasonable enough?

SoleSource · 13/05/2014 19:37

Oh thanks Raia :)

Do the wicks not just set on fire?

magimedi · 13/05/2014 19:57

I change my wick weekly - but I vape a hell of a lot. Can't be arsed to do the whole dry burn thing, because I know I'd cock it up.

The lovely Kate at my local shop gives me a great discount (as I have sent so many people her way) so my wicks only cost £1 or so.

Great to hear you are still off the fags, Sole.

And Sole's tale of bad batch of batteries just reinforces my mantra of 'go to your local vape shop'!!

You get service & attention & guarantees on your kit, 'cos they charge more than on line places they have to be really good on customer service.

And wouldn't you like to see your High Street filled with vape shops, rather than charity shops & Tso??????

Polter It is very odd to start with & I wanted to do the 'tap' on my vaper as you would with a fag.

You really will get used to it within the next couple of weeks & fags & all the associated 'smoking' stuff will become a dim & distant memory.

Well done on 11 days! Flowers

Helloooo, vapers. I'm a newbie to vaping, started on Thursday. I'm loving it more than I expected. Its like smoking but without the arse ache. Don't have to go out in the rain/ hail. I don't smell, though I can smell other things now. My tastebuds are returning too. I have the cola flavoured one which tastes of haribo cola bottles. The liquid states 1.8% is that 18mg?

magimedi · 13/05/2014 22:28

1.8 is indeed 18mg. It's the strength that most ex smokers start with, unles they smoked Capstan full strenght & thenm they might need 24 or 2.4! Grin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/05/2014 08:28

I'm getting on very well with The Sherlock magi, thank you! I'm not sure whether I prefer it to my usual RY4/RY6 blend, I'll probably know by the end of the bottle. Have you tried RY5? It's a similar kind of flavour.

Sole, the wicks don't burn because they are made of silica.

I change my wick weekly, sometimes go a bit longer. As I rebuild them it probably costs about 3p each time.

Welcome srj and Lumiona, well done Flowers

Cantabile · 14/05/2014 09:01

I dry burn often - it's fun!

I changed a wick once, on a CE4 which wasn't actually designed to be taken apart, so though the wick-changing was successful the putting the whole thing back together and using it wasn't so great! The new wick was hand made by me, of tightly twisted cotton wool. It worked but the clearo was never the same so I chucked it, bought some GS-H2s, then some CE5s and then some iClear 16s. My fave are CE5s but the lovely lovely mouthpiece which came with my MVP doesn't fit in them, otherwise I wouldn't use anything else.

Plenty, where do you get your wicks and wire, and which ones? I think I shall try rebuilding at last.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/05/2014 09:07

Oh I love this new stop smoking topic because it means I can just link Grin

Worth mentioning (but I'm sure you already know cantabile) that if you are using cotton wicks they will burn and need removing before you dry burn your coil.

magimedi · 14/05/2014 09:16

Where do you get RY5 from?

I'm going to order some if you say it's similar, as it worried me a bit, only liking one juice.

I change mine monlthy seems to work okay. Just realised, with all my hand me downs, that's my daughter aged twenty and my 25 yo son stopped smoking too. Still loving vaping got a quick shot of my new jinty last night and OMG the flavour and vape is much more intense! Have to set it up by computer so dh is doing it tonight as I'm clueless!x

Allergictoironing · 14/05/2014 09:55

Heh is this the same Shona who was worried about how complex vaping would be? Buying a mod that needs to be set up by computer???

charlietangoteakettlebarbeque · 14/05/2014 12:48

Hello, new here so marking my place. Will try and read entire thread once ds has gone to bed tonight and I have space to think and breathe

Got blood test results back yesterday and I have very high carbon monoxide in my blood, due to smoking. I got the gas safety people in yesterday to do a check but there was no sign of Co, so I can blame nothing except the cigs

I do have an e cig, it's my partner's. It's called sky cig. But it's run out and I don't know how to work it. After a particularly stressful morning, I succumbed and had a smoke. I feel dreadful and so have come on here for support.

Anyway enough drivel, my ds is about to wake from nap. Have brushed my teeth and washed my hands after the cig, made me feel sick and ashamed.

Laters people.

magimedi · 14/05/2014 13:10

I started with sky cigs - TBH they aren't very good & are quite expensive. (They are what are sometimes called a cigalike)

This is Allergic's great summary of vaping for beginners:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Hi charlietango! If you like the idea of CIG a likes I would recommend jacvapour as you can refill the carts with your own liquid. I have also bought blank carts for my original e lites which I have filled - I got them from cartomizer world and I think they do compatible carts for sky CIG too. Much cheaper than the branded ones and that lets you continue to use batteries you already have. You can also find a flavour you like. I think it is vital to always have access to a charged battery and full carts to help you not reach for a stinky CIG. My only lapse has been when I was out and my only battery went flat ( alcohol may also have been a factor!) Don't give up on the vaping idea just cos you don't like skycigs - there are so many other better options out there!
