When did step children stop being dss's or dsd's and start being skids?

I think the term is horrid - I know that not everyone uses it - Nom de Plume has always used dss for her stepsons.

Why aren't step children dear or darling like birth children to some people?

I have a dsd and wouldn't dream of calling her anything else except dd!!! She has been my dsd since she was 3 and is now 21

some stepkids are brats / some real kids are brats

Surely its each to their own? Think Ill be called mine TDLFH (Teenage DownLoader From Hell )rather than dss anymore as my home computer has now ground to a virtual standstill. Luckily am not using it too much at the minute

I don't think it necessarily means they like them less. It's only an acronym. When I write 'my son' or 'my daughter' in a post, leaving out the word darling doesn't means I love them less!

tamum · 13/05/2005 11:21

I tend to use the whole "stepdaughter" "stepson" thing, but it's not because I don't love them, just that they're in their twenties now and dsd/dss somehow imply children to me!

I am afraid that I am guilty of calling my stepchildren "skids" on here however, that is only because I read them being called that throughout this site and assumed that was the correct abbreviation for them. To be honest I have never cottoned onto the abbreviations on here and am still not sure what most of them stand for, could someone perhaps post them for me? I had no idea that the d in dss stood for "dear" otherwise I would have used it. Incidentally I would like it to be known that I love my stepchildren dearly and didn't mean in anyway to offend anyone. Sorry xxx

aloha · 13/05/2005 11:23

Sadsam, I think it's fine, personally!

Surfermum · 13/05/2005 12:32

Aloha's right, it is just an acronym and it's only been used when referring to children in the plural. I don't always use dsd on other threads as I'm not sure readers will always understand what it is. I think the fact that people are posting on here to get and give support means that they care about their step-children.

LooptheLoop · 16/05/2005 18:04

I use it simply when referring to the plural. I've seen it used loads of times on different sites and there is no denigration implied. Just as people talk about their bio children as kids, people use it as the plural of stepchildren. SadSam - it is a common abbreviation on lots of stepparenting sites.
