DH has 2 previous children from ex wife, i have my own ds and we share a child together. my husband bought our house, put in his own deposit and his name only on mortgage as i had bad credit and currently in a debt management plan trying to get debt free.
i do pay towards house household and bills etc
topic came up if were to pass away before me, he said the house would be paid off and could remain living there. but when and if house was sold his assets and property would be split 4 ways 25% each to his 2 dc our child and me. nothing to my own child who is his stepdaughter. what are people’s thoughts on this ? i feel i suppose its fair as its all his money and not mine.
i will one day inherit from my parents and i would split that between my own 2 children so i suppose its fair. my step children will also inherit a large amount from their own mother.

How old was your ds when your husband came into his life?

cupfinalchaos · 29/09/2026 11:48

Or Is your child a girl? Sorry I’m confused as in your first paragraph you say it’s a ds, but then you refer to his stepdaughter. Not that that makes a difference to your question!

I think it’s fair, I appreciate not everyone will agree. He has left you 25% which you could gift to your daughter/his step daughter. That way all 4 DC get 25%.

You have a life interest so potentially the house may only be sold when you die. It would be up to you in your will how you split the 25%.

you seem a bit cheeky to be honest considering you haven’t brought any money into the situation.

I mean you haven’t given any numbers or percentages so no one can possibly tell you, but on what you’ve written, it sounds like you are getting a very very good deal?
But it depends on numbers. You say he put i a deposit - but 10% ? 90? You say you contribute, but again 10%? 90%?
and why do you think your dc sgould inheirut from him, whereas you say you won’t include his dc in your inheritance?

and also - no one knows whether they will inherit or not. All the money may go on care. You can’t bank on it.

He can distribute his money how he pleases. I think he's being more than fair. He's left you a share. If you want to gift that to your child you can do that. If you die your child will benefit from the 25% he left you receiving 12.5%.. presumably they have their own paternal bio family that they may or may not insert from.

What your saying is I'll leave my money to my bio kids because thats fair but he's doing the same and somehow you feel put out. He could have left his kids 33.33% each and left you out entirely. What provision are you making for him exactly.
