Xmas budget & phone before xmas

We set a budget so my ds & partners ds have the same amount for xmas. My ds is 10, dss is 14. We also have a 1year old together.

I am still on mat leave, our money is pooled together, mine obviously being minimal.

My ds only has me, dad not on the scene, we have a small family, where as dss has both parents and big family both sides so always does incredibly well for xmas.

I already feel bad for my ds as the budget is alot less then normal plus in comparison it will just look like he has hardly anything.

Another issue being that dss's phone is quite old and dp wants to get him an upgrade before xmas! I am saying this is ridiculous and he should do it as his bday present otherwise he will get that plus presents.

The budget sounds fair and presumably DSS will be opening gifts from his mum and her big family at her house, so your son won't see them?

What's the deal with the phone - does DH always buy it as opposed to sharing the cost with his ex? Why is the upgrade needed?

I don't think it should be a big issue that DSS also gets gifts from elsewhere, presumably they won't be opened at the same time. However I think your DH should be buying the new phone for Christmas, rather than additionally.

Presents from dss's side will be opened there yes, but you know how kids compare etc, is all i mean

The reason for the upgrade now is due to black friday deals so he doesnt want to pay double for 2 months, hence givibg it now before xmas

Anyway regardless, I consider phone upgrades are presents unless they have stopped working through no fault of the child.

Buy a pre owned phone off contract.

Can he not upgrade the contract now, but keep the handset until Xmas. Even if the sim needs to be put in to the old phone, then DSS still gets the phone at Xmas as his main gift?

Are phones usually gifts for both boys?

Some families treat them as a necessity and upgrade as needed, which I think is fine, as long as this is the same for both children.

But I f your son will have to wait for Christmas or a birthday whenever he next needs a new phone, your SS should too.

Won't you're DSS still have his old phone if upgrading?

Confused as DH has just upgraded and gets to keep the old one too.

He can buy the phone in the black Friday sale (although it's all a con IMO), then give it to him at Christmas, so he still gets the so called good deal.

Get the phone now and out the SIM card into his existing phone. Gift the phone for his birthday.

Yeah... the current phone is on its last legs, so surely nobody works want it.

It sounds like your DH is making sense.

Why pay more in 2 months if it’s on a deal now.

When your DS needs a new phone I presume you will be able to upgrade when needed like he is for his son?
