stepkids bedroom

Hello!!!

I would like your advice regarding how to make the stepkids bedroom look nice when they come over during the weekend. We use their room to store our clothes and we have our rats and fish there too. There is enough room and it doesn't smell :)

I'm going to buy a clear photo holder AA size to put in their bedroom with pictures of where we have been last year. Since their mom don't like us and often criticize us in front of her kids, i want them to be able to remember the great times we have when they come here (rollerblading in the park, going to legoland...).

I was wondering if you have any tips to help stepkids feel that the bedroom is theirs even though you obviously use the room for something else during the week?

When they come their beds are made and toys arranged on the floor. I'm also going to give them big white paper sheets and say we're drawing posters for their bedroom this weekend.

Any other idea? They're two sons, 6 and 8.

let them pick the colours to paint it maybe (worked bloody brilliantly with dss) and let them pick their own bedding as I am betting they like different characters.

I would see what you can do to clear it of your stuff and the pets though, if you want it to feel like theirs then it actually needs to be theirs iyswim

Photos sound a good idea, but I'm unsure why you would have pets that live in a room that's empty 5/6 days a week?!
Surely the point of fish is to be able to watch them?

We're in a rented flat so aren't allowed to decorate, so I bought wall stickers. We have 3D butterflies and flat glittery butterflies. And god awful hello kitty curtains which she thinks are the bees knees

We are in a rented house so limited in decoration tbh, otherwise i would have loved to ask them though we more likely would have ended up with minecraft wallpapers lol

Hm the fish has just been there a week tbf as it used to be our bedroom, we'll put them in ours again tomorrow.

Until we move to a bigger house it's not going to be possible to move our wardrobes elsewhere i'm afraid! They are young and we spend most of their time here in the living room or outside.

Thanks for your comments, they have the same beddings right now but i'm going to look for some minecraft beddings that might get them excited ;)

We took SS to Ikea with a small budget to choose accessories for his bedroom when he was that age. He loved picking out his own things and it definitely made the bedroom feel like his.

agree that wall stickers are good and they do actually come off when you want them to
Under bed storage is good for toys, or a box tidied away im the wardrobe maybe?

definitely let them pick stuff for their room, even if it's just a bunch of stuff from the poundshop as it will definitely help them feel more like it's their space.

my dss gas his own room albeit the box on and dsd shares with dd (her half sister). dsd knows that whilst dd is a baby she gets to pick the decor but once dd is old enough then as it's mostly her room thales she will get to pick how it's decorated although as dd copies everything dsd does despite an 8 year age gap I imagine she will get her own way regardless

hmm I was wondering about the pets thing too. Especially the fish, what's the point if you can't sit there and admire them.
My tank is huge and the stock cost £1000's so no way I would keep them in the spare room. They are my pride & joy and I want everyone who comes into my house to enjoy them. Even if they are just a couple of gold fish I would pop them on the kitchen counter.
With regards to the room, why don't you ask what the kids want to do with it?
When I redecorate my children's rooms they get to chose the colour themes and any accessories they want in there. Simple.

Hm with them being boys of that age they don't really know what they like but i find the oldest does like to draw posters to hang up so that should keep them busy next weekend :)

Haha i would have the fishes downstairs but we can't trust our cat you see as downstairs is open between kitchen and living room, he'd have to spend the night with them so the only place they can be is the bedroom. I'd love a bigger fish tanks ans more fishes though! Looks lovely with the lights on too, doesn't it.

There is this site and app called Houzz that has amazing bedroom options. In fact for every room but the bedrooms are really imaginative with space.

Do they have 2 separate beds? If so, maybe wall decals over their beds with their names? The Etsy website has loads of options. And maybe a blanket box type thing at the end of their beds also with their names on it so they can put their belongings / pyjamas / toys inside - a space for just their stuff, not a shared wardrobe. And yeah, what everyone else has said about letting them choose their own bedlinen too. Good luck
