Can't find a thread so thought I'd start one nice and early for some pre chat.

Really don't think either England or Wales are going to get out of the pool rounds 🙁

I'm Spanish and know it's very offensive in the UK

20+ years since I left Sputh Africa so when i hear it I am a bit shocked... then I visit SA and its completely standard. DS really struggled to get his head round that on our last trip.

You're right - apologies.

Thanks :-)

It's a current term there and will remain so for very good reasons that are specific to South Africa's history and culture. So, it isn't offensive to use the term with reference to South Africa, and it would be very uninformed at best to say South Africans should stop using the term, unless the coloured community say so.

I suspect the point would be lost on Tom Curry though! 🙂

Congratulations to the England team on their bronze. I didn't watch the game but it seemed a close one.

I won't be on this thread again today, as off out soon along with millions of other South Africans to various get togethers to watch the final. There is not a one supporter shirt left to be found. Not even just a generic version, and everywhere is just a hue of green and gold. And flags. So many flags. On cars, outside homes, shops etc. I am so enjoying the spirit.

To the Kiwis here, I am sure it will be a good game and I am quite sure you must be feeling the same spirit as well. Enjoy and good luck to both teams.

May the forth be with us 😜

One of my friends is home in Johannesburg this week, and says the atmosphere is electric. Good luck to both teams from a staunch Ireland 🇮🇪 supporter!

sadforthem · 28/10/2023 14:10

Well done England.
A staunch Irish supporter here too.
I'm a neutral re the final. Just hoping for a great match.

maltravers · 28/10/2023 14:59

Good luck both teams (from an envious England supporter) and I hope it is a zinger!

MsMarch · 28/10/2023 15:01

Our family whatsapp is buzzing as we are all spread out over the world, and everyone is updating! I am missing the first half an hour as dd is at a much anticipated dance show, but she knows she has to be the first one out afterwards so we can rush home!!! 😀😀😀😀

Weepingwillows12 · 28/10/2023 15:49

I hope it's a great game. Will miss all the international rugby after this but at least the prem is back on. Good luck NZ and South Africa

maltravers · 28/10/2023 15:56

Regarding England v Argentina, I’m not sure Ford got the credit he should have had as “last man standing” to put in the tackle that stopped the late Pumas try that would have changed the result. He’s not a big guy compared to the others, was playing out of position and he stopped the Pumas man in full flight. Well done George!

GrouchyKiwi · 28/10/2023 17:44

I'm not as nervous about the match tonight as I was for the Ireland match, for some reason. Hopefully that means I won't be hiding behind the sofa at any point.

I have a bottle of white wine, and a bowl of Kiwi onion dip to have with crisps. Wink

Mostly I want the ABs to get 4 before the Boks, but I won't be crushed if SA takes it.

Just hope it's a good display of rugby. Smile

Totally agree with this - he stopped what looked like a nailed-on try, and changed my, 'NOOOOOOOOO' in to a 'nooooooooooOHMYGOD!' Good man, George.

GrouchyKiwi · 28/10/2023 20:13

Too much kicking from the ABs. What is this nonsense.

oviedo · 28/10/2023 21:16

Disappointing so far.

greenacrylicpaint · 28/10/2023 21:38

watching with a group of 10 yo who have never watched rugby before.
they are thrilled.

Weepingwillows12 · 28/10/2023 22:06

Well done S.A. Very gritty game. Could have gone either way at the end but probably South Africa played best and what a battle throughout the world cup to get to the final. Hope they get to recover now (and enjoy a few beers).

TaTuirseOrm · 28/10/2023 22:19

As an independent the team I wanted to win switched numerous times throughout the game, but Kolbe hiding under his Jersey for the last 10 mins made me feel so sorry for him and really want SA to win.
Well done 🇿🇦 🏆
Hard luck 🇳🇿

oceanskye · 28/10/2023 22:29

Oh man I'm sad the ABs couldn't get it, so close....argghghhh!! My nerves. What is with the Springboks and the 1 point wins??!!

Congrats South Africa!

George Ford would get my vote over Farrell every time. Did you hear the crowd booing Farrell
Every time he took a penalty kick?

I was theoretically neutral this evening, but if pushed would have wanted RSA to win, NZ always seem a bit smug to me, and I can't abide that bloody Hakka dance: performed by white men and Fijians who've sold their souls to play in NZ.

Well done to SA. You just had that extra belief in the last three games.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 28/10/2023 23:21

With you there @KnickerlessParsons

Have you spent any time in NZ? I bloody hate this attitude.

And Haka only has one K.

I've enjoyed this thread in general, but I'm tired of people who have no idea about the cultural history of NZ (and the other Pacific Island nations) whining about something they clearly don't understand.

Explain it to me then please. I'm pretty sure the white men have no cultural history of the haka (autocorrect changes this to Hakka btw).

Those white men have probably being doing the haka since they were 5 years old and started primary school. There are a lot of different haka, and often schools will have their own haka - every child learns it regardless if they are European/Maori/Fijian/Indian/etc heritage. They will also learn basic Maori words and phrases at school, I still remember all the way back in the '80's when I was at primary school every morning the teacher saying "Tena Koutou, Tena Koutou, Tamariki Ma" (hello children). And we would all reply "Tena Koe Kaiako". (hello teacher). And she didn't then add an English greeting to apply to the European children. So I don't think seeing non-Maori people using Maori words is seen the same way here as it might be to outsiders. It is more normal (to us) for them all to do it than if the All Black's Maori players stood apart and did the Haka by themselves.
