Can't find a thread so thought I'd start one nice and early for some pre chat.

Really don't think either England or Wales are going to get out of the pool rounds 🙁

Farrell can be a loose cannon out there but I thought his post match comments were very generous and sporting. And anyway he scored all England's points.

He needs to stop arguing with the referee though.

That was exactly what BBC sport rugby about the match were saying - not sure if just the reporter and the random commenters, but at least 2 said Farrell should come off due to his arguing with the referee or that he’d get sent off for it!

LadyEloise1 · 22/10/2023 18:20

I think it's amazing that Andy Farrell is doing such a great job as the popular manager of Ireland's rugby team and his son is doing so well ( scoring ) for the English team.

duc748 · 22/10/2023 18:30

It's not amazing: they're from Wigan; rugby is in their blood! 😁

JayAlfredPrufrock · 22/10/2023 18:33

League is.

LadyEloise1 · 22/10/2023 20:22

@duc748 it's not their rugby ability it's the fact their on opposing sides.

LadyEloise1 · 22/10/2023 20:22

Owen Farrell's back chat cost them a few metres when they were marched back. It's also a terrible look when a so called role model has to be dragged away from arguing with the ref by Jamie George & Joe Marchant. He is an embarrassment.

It's all over the news here today and I suppose we will find out more tomorrow.

What Bongi allegedly said has been mentioned here, but I don't know if I am able to post it here, as at the moment it's hearsay.

It is said he was speaking Afrikaans (which is the language he speaks as do many of the team), which translated does sound like a slur word in English.

I am very disappointed this has made the news and nobody has thought for a single second about the words and the language spoken by all of the South African players. They speak Afrikaans to each other exclusively, as you mention. The English team wear white jerseys and the ref refers to them as 'white', meaning their jersey colour, as they do with all teams, they refer to their jersey colours. In Afrikaans, whit kant, means white player. Mbonambi was telling the ref the white player was offside. Maybe Tom Curry forgot for a second that not everybody's first language is English and the South Africans speak Afrikaans. I am disappointed it's been made into a story before anyone took a pause and asked someone who spoke their language.

I'm really proud of England - they played their hearts out last night and IMO they deserved to win and played much better than SA did. I'd have loved it if they'd won - if only to prove all the haters and the naysayers wrong. Sadly, it wasn't to be. But I'm still proud of how far they got when so many people wrote them off from the start.

They didn't even score a try despite all the possession and dominance. They scored off South African mistakes only. I don't think anyone wrote them off, rather people were unhappy with the draw being made so early and England having a very easy ride to the semis while in poor form, with all opposition being below them on the rankings. SA played their worst game in years and still won. Congratulations to the winning, and deserving, team.

Any guesses who will ref the final? I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that it’s not Angus Gardner

Wayne Barnes has been announced as the referee. Good choice. I do like him.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 23/10/2023 10:18

Wayne Barnes is a great choice for ref, happy with that. Go Bokke!

Not sure if I need to put a disclaimer for bad language to follow, but just incase here it is.

I have not followed up this morning as to if Curry is still going ahead with these allegations, but from the view of a South African, it is being seen as sour grapes and causing a fuss where it is not warranted. Curry did mention to the ref, who then brushed it off, probably as he knew that Mbonambi was referring to the fact that they had lost the ball and Bongi said the "white side" now had possession. It could also have been 'wyd kant' though which is 'wide side' pronounced as "vayed cunt"

Here in SA it is quite rare to hear anyone using the cunt There are plenty of swear words, and most are in Afrikaans. Even an English speaking person swears in Afrikaans as it just has so much more grit and seems to get the frustration out more 😀 So cunt is not a word that you would hear or use much here. A proper translation for that would be kont anyway, but poes would be the preferred swear word. It is terrible, but often said as 'jou ma se poes' (its awful and involves your mother). but that is shortened very often to just 'jou ma se. (your mother's). And we all know what the shortened one means without even the actual slur word in the phrase.

If Bongi was swearing at him, there are very different words he would use. And English is his 3rd language, so poes would be more the one to roll off the tongue so to speak.

For those who love a good swear word, these are great too:

Fokkof (not sure that one needs explaining but used so much more than fuck off)
Fokkol (nothing, as in I know nothing - ek weet fokkol. What have you done today, ie nothing - ek het fokkol gedoen)
Voetsek ( aka fokkof, piss off, go away but with more grit, also referred to as tsek)
And then there are hand signals... an all fingers up as in pointing up with closed hand - fokkof

So perhaps next week you can listen out for a few off these during the game 😀

World Rugby have announced they will be investigating. Not sure what this will mean for Saturday. Anyone know how long an investigation can take?

Only seen it on BBC news which is very low on actual detail.

World Rugby to review Mbonambi racial slur allegation - BBC Sport

World Rugby confirms it will formally review Bongi Mbonambi's alleged use of discriminatory language towards England's Tom Curry.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 23/10/2023 11:51

Well, its not like world rugby are known to be very inclusive! They're making a mistake here, but I think the South Africans are used to being targeted. A simple conversation explaining the language is all thats needed, not an investigation. Mbonambi is the only specialist hooker left. I think this is deliberate.

Thanks @isthismylifenow

MsMarch · 23/10/2023 11:56

Yeah, I have to say that this does feel a bit ridiculous. I hope "investigation" means "we'll go talk to people about the language and move on."

Maybe I'm also old fashioned but I'm struggling a bit - I don't like poor language on the sports field and I do prefer a bit of appropriately sportsmanlike behaviour but... a bit of swearing doesn't feel like a big deal even if it true. I do agree with the other Saffa's on here though - cunt isn't a word used routinely and the "jou ma se poes" is far more likely if we were going to go that route.

One of the teams who lost last week - Wales maybe? Ireland? - afterwards were clearly swearing "Fuck you" at everyone. No one is complaining about them.

Also, the ref was clearly a bit irritated with the whining generally. England got that penalty kick moved forward as a result!

PinkFrogss · 23/10/2023 11:56

Yes even if it turns into nothing it’s a terrible start psychologically to a week where the sole focus should be on preparing for the win.

Rather dampens the spirit either way.

MsMarch · 23/10/2023 11:57

Also, I thought England played a clever tactical game - they came on prepared to disrupt South Africa and did that really really well. But South Africa STILL won. At the end of the day, it all just screams "sour grapes".

Iwantcakeeveryday · 23/10/2023 12:00

They never do. You're right, they swear a lot, Sexton is disgusting on the field, always yelling and angry, swearing at people. There were a lot of articles around the world at the start of the comp about the unconscious bias by the refs towards the Polynesian teams too. It is a real shame this has all happened.

PinkFrogss · 23/10/2023 12:00

I think it’s a bit of a farce and World Rugby just need to be seen to do something.

Apparently England did not pursue the complaint, although I don’t know why they decided not to.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 23/10/2023 12:05

While its a bad way to start the weeks preparation, south Africa are used to having things happen that disrupt that and they have a history of overcoming it. Rassie was ill last WC, taking chemo drugs, and it didn't;t distract him, and back home Etzebeth had been falsely accused of awful things and they still managed to focus. I think pro sportspeople get used to people trying to disrupt them tbh. The Aussie media were threatening for weeks to reveal something about an AB player, night before a bledisloe game they dropped a story about a player cheating on his wife. Player left, barely played after that, and it was a big loss for their forward pack. Didn't matter though cos Aussie are useless 😂

MsMarch · 23/10/2023 12:09

duc748 · 22/10/2023 16:55

Zulu and Xhosa are the commonest African languages spoken in SA. Afrikaans is mostly (although not entirely, of course) spoken by whites. I'm not 'implying' anything untoward.

I am not sure about percentage of people who speak zulu/xhosa as a first language vs other first languages, but English and Afrikaans are definitely the languages that are spoken by more people - whether that be as a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd language. For many black people, they will have grown up speaking their native language, may well have been schooled in English or Afrikaans and would have had to learn the other one for work.

Also, don't take this the wrong way - but you do know that for a rugby team to play together, they have to have at least one language in common right? So it's a bit naive to assume he was speaking a different language to the rest of the team.

I 100% think this is a tactical move to disrupt for Saturday.

And yes, Boks are quite used to negativity. Did you hear the boo-ing in the crowd both this past weekend, and during the France game.

And Reinach played after receiving death threats last week in French. Saying he and his son will be targeted if he returns to play for Montpellier.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 23/10/2023 12:46

@isthismylifenow

My brother swears in Afrikaans. Like you say, it feels grittier.

Yes, sadly, very much a tactical move. World rugby are a disgraceful organisation with a horrible bias. I did hear the boo-ing, seems to happen in certain countries more than others, and France have shamed themselves, especially the absolutely awful threats towards Reinach. I love sport but the racism in some sports makes it hard to follow it. I hope the Boks win, but not by the usual 2 points with this opponent, I hope they dazzle us with a huge score and keep the silver lake all blacks to nil!😂 ( silver lake own a slice of NZR )

algasport · 23/10/2023 17:28

So Wayne Barnes has been given the final! Not at all surprised- he's definitely the best ref.
