Can't find a thread so thought I'd start one nice and early for some pre chat.

Really don't think either England or Wales are going to get out of the pool rounds 🙁

For those who are not die hard fans - A drop goal is not as easy as it looks. The (irregularly shaped) ball has to be dropped on and connect with the ground before you can kick it and half the other team are bearing down on you. Skill plus nerves of steel required. I’m sad England are out, but they played well and did us proud.

Abhannmor · 22/10/2023 13:30

Drop goals not as easy as they sometimes look. The ball must touch the ground before you strike it.

SA looked a bit leg weary and took time to get up to speed. No wonder after their epic match against France 6 days before.

That was one of the real semifinals , the other being Ireland v NZ. That said , England played a brilliant tactical game whereas the Boks were forced to hook their no 10 after half an hour , having misjudged the conditions at first.

Farrell can be a loose cannon out there but I thought his post match comments were very generous and sporting. And anyway he scored all England's points.

Abhannmor · 22/10/2023 13:31

Oops sorry @maltravers . Didn't see you'd already explained it so well!

LadyEloise1 · 22/10/2023 13:45

@Abhannmor SmileI didn't hear his interview but saw his interaction with a SA player and it was very gracious.

Party pooper DH said that there are a few South African players playing for English clubs, to explain the graciousness after loss.
I think DH is still smarting from Ireland's loss in the quarters

PinkFrogss · 22/10/2023 14:14

Anyone seen the news stories about Bongi Mbonambi and Tom Curry?

Not sure what to make of it. I don’t think Tom Curry would make it up, I’m sure he believes that’s what he hears. But can’t see Bongi saying that tbh.

Will world rugby investigate or what happens next?

Weepingwillows12 · 22/10/2023 15:11

I haven't heard. What did Curry say happened?

duc748 · 22/10/2023 15:16

There's a piece on the BBC Sport site. Curry didn't elaborate, or at least, not publicly.

Meanwhile Tonga take the lead in the sunshine!

It's all over the news here today and I suppose we will find out more tomorrow.

What Bongi allegedly said has been mentioned here, but I don't know if I am able to post it here, as at the moment it's hearsay.

It is said he was speaking Afrikaans (which is the language he speaks as do many of the team), which translated does sound like a slur word in English.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 22/10/2023 16:10

So what is See you next Tuesday in Afrikaans

Abhannmor · 22/10/2023 16:17

@LadyEloise1 I don't blame your DH . Just hope the final isn't a blow out like NZ / Argentina or a plodding kick fest like England/ SA. Doubt Ireland would make the final anyway ...bench not good enough. But surely France would have graced a semi if not final? Bizarre draw.

PinkFrogss · 22/10/2023 16:33

poes.

The “c” word isn’t used there much and English isn’t Bongi’s first language, which is part of the reason I doubt he said it.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 22/10/2023 16:38

No I mean what did he say in Afrikaans that sounds like the c word.

duc748 · 22/10/2023 16:41

Would he be talking Afrikaans, rather than Zulu or something?

The P word has been thrown around plenty these past few weeks.... Poor Kieran Williams seems to riled quire a few up and knows that one well now.

The C word isn't generally used here I agree, but if he was referring to the white side it could have been misinterpreted.

Green side (Boks) - Groen kant
White side (England ) - Wit kant

Is Poes a racial slur? I think it's just a slur.

PinkFrogss · 22/10/2023 16:52

Really don’t like what you seem to be implying there. Why would he be speaking Zulu “or something” over Afrikaans? Confused

@JayAlfredPrufrock “Kaant” means side in Afrikaans and is pronounced like cunt, he would have been saying offside or similar.

@isthismylifenow afaik Poes just means cunt, no racial connotations. Although of course when linked to a comment about race would be racist.

duc748 · 22/10/2023 16:55

Zulu and Xhosa are the commonest African languages spoken in SA. Afrikaans is mostly (although not entirely, of course) spoken by whites. I'm not 'implying' anything untoward.

PinkFrogss · 22/10/2023 17:01

Yes I’m aware, however that doesn’t mean black South Africans do not speak Afrikaans.

The Springboks are pretty Afrikaans dominated as well, I imagine most of the players speak it if not all - I’ve often heard them shout Afrikaans to each other on the pitch.

Will be interested to see what World Rugby say tomorrow, I’ll be very disappointed if it turns out to be true - I imagine the whole squad would be Sad

JayAlfredPrufrock · 22/10/2023 17:04

Thanks @PinkFrogss

Weepingwillows12 · 22/10/2023 17:06

Sounds like hopefully it's a simple misunderstanding then. Tom curry seems pretty straightforward and not someone who would wilfully misunderstand to get someone in trouble. I read he said he didn't want to talk about it after the game. Hopefully all goes away soon.

cheezncrackers · 22/10/2023 17:20

I'm really proud of England - they played their hearts out last night and IMO they deserved to win and played much better than SA did. I'd have loved it if they'd won - if only to prove all the haters and the naysayers wrong. Sadly, it wasn't to be. But I'm still proud of how far they got when so many people wrote them off from the start.

PinkFrogss · 22/10/2023 17:22

Any guesses who will ref the final? I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that it’s not Angus Gardner

Yes, but also very area dependant.

Bongi is from Bloemfontein, a predominantly Afrikaans area. He is fluent as well as English and Zulu.

I do also hope it is all a misunderstanding, and they can move on. Apparently the two of them did not shake hands at the end though.

He needs to stop arguing with the referee though.
