Yesterday, my son who's in year 7 came home gutted because he's been told he's not in the end of year football festival or chosen for any sports day events. My son is a talented footballer and has played for county etc. and holds the record for one of the races. He is a good boy at school although It's been a tough year adjusting to life at secondary and behaviour in general is awful there with many teachers leaving mainly because of this. Now they have allowed one pupil in each house (total of 4 houses) to decide on their football team and who gets to do which sport. My son hasn't been chosen by this child so will be watching all events. He's taken quite a lot of abuse off some of the kids that have been chosen for events over the year and the child choosing had been deliberately not including my son in lots of things socially. However, now he's choosing school sports events I am absolutely fuming. AIBU to think that if they want to empower children to organise themselves they should be allowing them to sign up for the sports they would like to take part in and then that's a teachers job to organise heats or choose?
