My DS is 10 and really loves rugby along with me and most members of our family however none of us have ever played it. Is it okay/normal for kids of his age to start or do they need to be younger or older?

It is fine.
Rugby is one of the most welcoming sports for people who are new to the game, IMO.
Lots of people won't have played before, at his age.

Dd2 and ds, both 8, do rugby and have been for quite a while. They both love it!

Definitely a sport you can start at 10 as they'll just be getting into contact. They also tend to introduce certain aspects of the game at certain age groups, eg Scrums and line outs are uncontested up to a certain age. My DS and DD both play and I love it!
