What about the women's world cup?!

Hi everyone, I read a couple of threads here and realised I was only reading about men's football. The women's world cup starts on 7th June and it's a really important year for supporting and promoting the game for women and girls. For those that don't know, a bit of history is that the women’s game was huge in the UK between the world wars (crowds of 55,000 with 14,000 waiting outside!), and large numbers of working class factory women playing in teams all over the country over many years - becoming household names and raising lots of money for returned soldiers and mining communities. Then the FA banned women from playing, for 50 years. When the FA finally lifted the ban in the 70s, women players faced horrendous treatment and the game has been struggling to come back ever since.

So it's brilliant that football is having a comeback. Here's where it's on in London londonist.com/london/sport/womens-world-cup-2019-football-where-to-watch-london-screenings

Come on Scotland!

I saw England play the other day and it was great. Thoroughly entertaining. We're playing Argentina tonight and I'm looking forward to it.

Did anyone else just see that penalty? All credit to the Argentinian goalie - great save!

I was looking for a thread about the women's World Cup and here it is!

It's so good to see the huge progress that's been made in the women's game over the last 10 years or so, and to actually see the Lionesses on BBC1! I've been watching the men play for years and IMHO at the top level there is very little difference between the sexes in the level of skill now.

OOOH GOOOOAL!!!!

I’ve been trying to work this out, now we’re (England) definitely through- woohoo- (Sorry Scotland).

If we go through second in the group, it looks like we have a better route through to the final. If we go through too, we have two easy games, but then meet USA or France, assuming all goes to plan...

There is a huge difference in skill. Just look at some of the awful mistakes in this competition - Thailand for example and other howlers. Just accept women’s football is a different game. I’m agreeing with some women who think the pitch should be a bit smaller and also the size of the goals. This might mean a more intense game and fewer teams being able to score a hatful of goals in uncompetitive matches.

The Argentinian goalkeeper made a good save but it wasn’t a great penalty. Harry Kane would have blasted that in every time. In the women’s game, if there is insufficient power, the shot must go a bit higher and out of reach. This save looked good because she competently saved an average shot with insufficient power.

Why was the crowd only 5500 at the Women’s league cup final in Sheffield earlier this year? Why are people only watching international women’s football and crowds are small at the domestic level? In Spain games are free (at a cost to the hosting club of course) but crowds are big as a result of free admission. Would that approach work here? I’m not sure but there is little evidence of big paying crowds. It won’t attract me any time soon I’m afraid. The men’s game is significantly better for my money.

Cmon Scotland!!!!

Almostflownthenest · 30/06/2019 07:17

Bubblesbudy I have to disagree I think that women’s football is great actually. Having watched quite a few matches during the WWC they really play rather than act, dive, boringly just knock the ball to each other, etc. It’s raw like football of old! I’ve enjoyed it so much that some friends and I have just bought tickets to see England vs USA on Tuesday! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Half time, we're not doing too well. The speed on Ellen White though, I thought my screen was glitching.

stayathomer · 02/07/2019 21:06

Bubblesbuddy I agree the skill level is a lot lower, men's world cup the motions are so fluid but actually dh was saying most of the women are working whereas the men are professional and play for clubs. He was saying if people would start going to the matches or viewing figures were up on tv, they'd get more. He said it's up to us to watch

If you want to carry on supporting the Women's team and all other women's sport I'd recommend www.newschain.uk/

The posts are very clear relevant forum comments. I think it has been greatly improved so that the site itself is free of scrambled content but piles up much slower than the other comparable content. See more about run 3 a site about cool games for you.
