DS is 8 (in Year 4) and has been in the after-school netball club for the last 3 months. He is really keen, and has been really looking forward to playing a match. They all play netball during PE, but it is the club who play the matches and he is the only boy.
The first match is next Thursday, but he came out in floods of tears yesterday as he's been told boys can't play, "but he is welcome to go along as a cheerleader"!!?
There is a schools 5 aside league for mixed teams run by the council - his school is signed up but their tournament isn't until March. Until then they play in the local primary schools 7 aside league, which is run on a voluntary basis by teachers and doesn't allow boys.
I spoke to the PE co-ordinator at the council who was really supportive but the 7aside league is nothing to do with her, so I have to take it up with the school. She said she has spoken to the teachers running the 7aside about this before, but its historically for girls and they want to keep it that way! Obviously I am not going to let this go - just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar and/or succeeded in changing the outdated rules? x
