DS13 'cyst' making a bid for freedom??

HannahHamptonsGloves · 16/09/2025 22:02

DS has had a cyst of some kind on his neck for a while. Had antibiotics for it back in early summer as it got big and red. It settled down. We were on holiday last week of August and DS was in the pool every day. It then started to get a bit oozy/weepy.

Today he came home from school and it had clearly done something during the day as there was blood tinged gunk on his shirt and a scab (first pic). He went for a shower and now it looks like this - it looks like a blob is tying to escape from his neck.

Do I need to do anything??!! He's a bit disturbed by it.

Can't see any photos op. But if it's worrying him. Cleanse it .
Anti bacterial cream and hot cloths
Drs if it gets bad

HannahHamptonsGloves · 16/09/2025 22:10

Images are still under review 😕

I am in no way medically qualified but I would be tempted to put a hot flannel on it as hot as he can stand and try to draw it out and give it a good squeeze. But then I can't be trusted around anything that looks remotely squeezable so maybe don't listen to me.

CrazyCatMam · 16/09/2025 22:24

Hot cloth, yes. No squeezing though.

It looks angry!

Magnesium sulphate paste under a bandage of some sort is my go-to to draw things out, but it looks like an open wound so not sure of that advisable.

Cluborange666 · 16/09/2025 22:29

Do NOT squeeze it. Go to the nurse at your GP practice. There was a guy in my local paper who ‘popped’ a cyst on his neck and gave himself sepsis. Your son might need another course of antibiotics.

HannahHamptonsGloves · 16/09/2025 22:35

I'm definitely not squeezing it!! I think I'll cover it tonight and try to see the GP/nurse tomorrow.

No advice but it is a thing of beauty, thanks for the pictures.

NigellaAwesome · 16/09/2025 22:51

Do you have antiseptic spray? I use clinisept for everything and it is amazing. I would spray with antiseptic and cover, then call GP tomorrow. Definitely no squeezing.

HannahHamptonsGloves · 16/09/2025 23:21

@NigellaAwesome - I don't have any spray like that, but I have covered it with a sterile dressing.

@Antimimisti I'm glad you appreciate it - it's making me feel a bit 🤢 thinking about it!!

Not to be a scare monger but I have seen Melanomas that look like this. I would definitely see a GP. Especially as he has been treated for it and it still looks this way. Could be something, could be nothing. Better to be safe. Hope hes okay x

helpForAFriend1 · 16/09/2025 23:28

Does he have a temperature? Looks pretty awful to me (not qualified) I’d certainly see someone tomorrow

I do know what you mean, but he's had an ultrasound scan on it which showed It was a fluid filled cyst. It has also only just started to look scabby like that today.

Will definitely be getting it looked at again tomorrow, but he seems well in himself.

Joining slightly hesitantly, as I hope it’ll be a satisfying outcome but I haven’t worked up to looking at the pics yet 🙈

WellMaybeYouShouldntBeLivingHeeeeeeee · 16/09/2025 23:56

And I’m glad he seems well! That’s the main thing of course

Brokentri · 17/09/2025 00:01

Dh had something similar, and basically the rub of a bag strap basically burst it open and had applied pressure enough that it had made the sack or shell or something can’t quite remember what they’d said of the cyst to basically hang out

That is basically what it looks like 🤢

I wonder if now he's back at school his shirt/tie/bag might be rubbing it.

It looks to me like the cyst has popped and drained and now the empty cyst capsule is poking out of his skin.

If that was on me, I would try pulling it out gently with some tweezers to see if the capsule will come out. But as it's been there a while it might be attached under the skin and need cutting out.

Im glad its nothing sinister. I just saw it and thought it was similar to the nasties ive seen! Hopefully you managed to get some answers today as it looks super sore x

HannahHamptonsGloves · 17/09/2025 17:20

We've seen the doctor and are going back again tomorrow to see another dr who may be able to remove it in the GP surgery.

It is definitely the 'capsule' protruding from the skin.

DS says it doesn't hurt which is good, and we're keeping it covered with sterile dressings to hopefully avoid any infection.
