Psst, wanna see what a neurosurgeon drained out of my brain?

I've been doing higher risk or full contact sports in some form or another since I was 5 - horse riding, rugby, martial arts - and as it turns out I shouldn't have been doing any of it (and won't be any more). I have something called a left cranial fossa subarachnoid cyst near the base of my skull that ruptured following a particularly hard knock and caused a build up of fluid and a bleed on the brain behind my left eye.

Over the last 3 weeks I've had so much pain, vomiting, eyesight and balance issues, CT scans, eye exams, an MRI, and on Monday a very nice neurosurgeon at the local teaching hospital drilled two holes in my skull, rinsed things out a bit, stapled the scalp shut and left a drain in for a couple of days to let the pressure levels sort themselves out, and I thought to myself 'who do you show photos of this kind of thing to?'

😁 Sporners of course!

Sporners Corner is going to be disappointing from now on! Thank you for sharing! And I hope recovery goes well.

Thanks for thinking of the sporner community as this terrible time OP 🤣

did they really drain 100ml out of your head? That must have been enormous!

I suspect a bit of it must be remnants of the sterile solution they flushed through to wash the blood out but if you think about how much space even 50ml would take up and your brain being compressed by that much it certainly explains the pain levels...

Crikey!
I hope you recover really quickly. It takes me back to when I worked in a Neurosurgery hospital 50 years ago……

"a very nice neurosurgeon drilled 2 holes in my skull and stuck a drain in ......" Can't quote exactly but it writes like just a standard day at the office for him 😂😂.

Reminds me of my days as a junior doctor on the neurosurgical unit.... horrendous things. Good luck.

Oh my giddy aunt!! I hope you recover swiftly. That sounds horrendous and yet utterly fascinating.

100% beige as far as he was concerned 😆 By way of reassurance, when his surgical registrar came round to do the pre-op consent paperwork he reassured me that from their point of view, this was a totally straightforward basic procedure. He looked like Clarke Kent and smelled lovely though so I forgave him for implying I was boring 😁

Wow! But as a horse rider and owne you can't give up riding for something as small as brian surgery..

And I mean Brian. I broke my cheek on a horse called Turner
