Wanna see my face lump?

Hot, swollen and a bit itchy. Turned up last night before bed, smaller and dark red. Dunno if it's a bite or one of those deep spots.
I've had hives like this on my face after eating prawns (allergic) but they were very itchy and there were lots of them. Haven't knowingly eaten anything I'm allergic to.
My only 'hmm' thought is that I have a dodgy cracked and crowned tooth directly under that. Dentist keeps a close eye and it was xrayed a couple of months ago, all fine and unchanged. But surely that would be painful somewhere?

That looks impressive. Maybe phone for advice in case it's infected?

Thank you for being impressed 😀It's my only motivation for posting a photo here 😀
Do you mean call 111, GP or the dentist? I'd be mortified if it's just a blind pimple or insect bite. Tbh I wonder if it's just a bite, it's so swollen but no pain. I'd expect even a spot this size to be sore.
I've taken an antihistamine to see if it has any effect and I'll put a hot water bottle on it so if there's a head it might encourage it.

When you bite on the tooth that's a bit dodgy, does it feel different, like a bit spongy underneath? I had this with an abscess and it didn't hurt then, but soon did when it got bigger, so do go to your dentist or at least call them

Gosh, that's impressive - and a bit worrying. I've had spectacular gum boils which weren't painful at all, strangely. Hope you get sorted and feel better soon.

In my opinion (dentist) Looks like an infected sebaceous cyst rather than infection of dental origin.

Ah thanks for your reply, that's encouraging. It was the dental thing I was really concerned about.
I had a sebaceous cyst on my back years ago which had been there a while before it became infected. I could feel the lump under the skin and there was sort of a blackhead. There hasn't been any lump or anything on my face before this appeared last night. But I'm not a hcp so I don't know how these things work, maybe it can just pop up out of nowhere

Okay good to know. It has been niggling for a long time so they check it regularly. I wouldn't say it feels much different now.
I saw a small dark spot last night, like a mosquito bite on my face. This morning I didn't even twig anything had changed until I had a look in a mirror.

I’ve revisited this thread this morning because exactly the same thing has happened on the other side of my face in exactly the same way just short of a year from the last time.

Last year’s bump was big and ugly slightly itchy but not sore and it didn’t come to a head or anything, it just peaked then got less inflamed over time until it eventually went away.

This one has a slight feeling of something like a tiny fibre poking out when I run my finger over it, like I’ve been stung. It feels more like an allergic reaction than a spot or infection. I took a Piriton at bedtime last night and it seemed to help.

Could the tiny fibre actually be a hair that was ingrown?

I don’t think so, it’s right in the middle of my cheek, there’s no hair to be ingrown iyswim. And it’s not hard or sore like a spot.
It’s madly itchy too. Can you get just one massive hive?

Sounds like a bite then maybe?

Bananarama2000 · 13/09/2025 22:51

Hot and cold presses alternatively are supposed to help if it’s a boil? Might be worth a go?

Bananarama2000 · 13/09/2025 22:52

Ah missed the itchy, horsefly bite? They’re vicious!

trainedopossum · 14/09/2025 00:28

I guess it can’t be a hive as I’ve had it for over 24hrs.
I don’t think it can be a bite though, it’s right under my eye and I would have seen something on my face biting me surely? But fwiw it’s closer to a bite than anything else. Dark red central bump and a larger inflamed area around it, soft if pressed, hot and itchy.
Half an antihistamine helped tonight, I was able to go out without looking like a complete freak.
This is what it looked like this morning 😱

Is something biting you in the night? I got a mosquito bite on my cheek on a weekend away recently but it wasn't as drastic as that. It does look like an insect bite though.
