Puss filled lump in throat

HiccupHey · 02/02/2024 19:31

Had a cough/cough for a couple weeks and an increasingly sore throat. Today I’ve been finding it harder and harder to swallow and now seen this lump-when I prodded it it oozed pus that tastes pretty rank. Can I pop it?

I’m no doctor, but I think that might be a quinsey, in which case you should get it checked out asap. If it is, you can get very unwell. I had one a few years back, it was horrible.

Yep. You need to ring 111.

SmashedPrawnsInAMilkyBasket · 02/02/2024 20:07

Agree with everyone else. Popping it would be satisfying but not at all sensible. Quinsy can get serious very quickly, so give 111 a call now.

theemmadilemma · 02/02/2024 20:08

Quinsy. I had it a few times. Remember it bursting down my throat. 😩

Get seen ASAP.

I had to have my tonsils out in the end due to reoccurring quinsy.

Papillon23 · 02/02/2024 20:11

Loos pretty quinsy-like to me too, though I am not a medic. :( Hopefully they can prescribe oral antibiotics (and you can swallow them). I think the problems with quinsy tend to arise if it's got to the point you can't swallow anything and therefore need intravenous antibiotics.

GN637 · 02/02/2024 20:38

Yep, medical attention TONIGHT. I'm a retired nurse and was admitted with a suspected quinsy. Don't mess about.

Papillon23 · 03/02/2024 08:49

Did you manage to get someone to look at it @HiccupHey ? It looks very unpleasant!

HiccupHey · 03/02/2024 12:57

I’ve not had much joy with nhs so my DH has made me a private video appointment with an online doctor this afternoon. I don’t think it looks worse but both sides are feeling full now. Good job I didn’t pop it! (And film it!)

My husband was in hospital with quinsy. They took his tonsils out after that. Glad you're speaking to a doctor

Papillon23 · 03/02/2024 14:36

Glad you're speaking to a doctor. I think I'd be tempted to see if I could get any more photos of it as not sure a video call will do it justice? I hope they are able to help.

Cowsontheloose · 03/02/2024 14:51

I had tonsillitis a couple of weeks ago, when I got a GP appt he told me what signs to watch for possible quinsey. He said if I had any at all, then to go straight to A&E. Is that an option for you?

Figgygal · 03/02/2024 14:53

My husband was rushed to A+E with a quinsy with horror stories of septic shock etc i hope your online appointment is helpful

MurielThrockmorton · 03/02/2024 14:55

DD has had quinsy twice and both times an A&E job and a night or two in hospital on IV antibiotics after having it lanced. 111 had no interest at all the first time, just the usual somebody will call you back at some point. I recognised what it was even she called me (4am!) and told her to get an Uber to hospital, and within 15 minutes of arriving she was in with the doctor as it was affecting her breathing. She's also scheduled for a tonsillectomy this year. Good luck!

Mynewnameis · 03/02/2024 14:57

I had puss spots in my tonsils once but without other symptoms and no pain. I was given antibiotics.
Definitely get seen.

FloofCloud · 03/02/2024 15:04

Oooo nasty - glad you're getting help

ZebraD · 03/02/2024 15:11

Definitely get seen…you should have gone to a and e not made an appointment

supiciousminds · 03/02/2024 15:14

I had this ended up in A and E started showing signs of sepsis but luckily caught it in time. Horrific. Please don't wait to see a doctor.

Thunderstruckbysnoring · 03/02/2024 16:18

Oh you poor thing. Not a sporn thimg but definitely one to go check out

HiccupHey · 04/02/2024 10:27

Online doctor prescribed antibiotics but annoyingly no where’s open that will accept a private prescription until Monday. It hasn’t got any worse, and I don’t actually feel too bad. Dr said it definitely isn’t quinsy but didn’t really say what it was just to practise good oral hygiene?! I’ll see how I go but thank you everyone for the advice.
