I have a cold, not a bad cold but something weird is happening.

My nose isn't particularly runny but over night my nose fills up with snot, but not the runny kind wher eyou can blow your nose, it is a sort of solid sticky mass.

I know the obvious thing is to pick my nose but it really does stick and that's painful.

Any ideas of how to remove solid snot?

Head over a bowl of steaming hot water, if you have Olbas Oil or Vicks you can put in the water, even better.

Towel over the head and inhale.

Thank you I'll give that a go.

Maybe a Neti pot ? It's like a nasal irrigation thing

Well the steam worked thank you.

Well the steam worked thank you.

Glad it helped.

The other thing you can try if steam inhalation doesn’t help is to try saline nose drops; the saline sort of melts the snot and makes it easier to blow your nose

In the shower cup your hands and fill with hot water, then sniff it up, properly try and snort it. Then blow your nose. Gets easier with practice, great for sinusitis too.

Sterimar - flush your sinuses.

Do not do this.

Tap water (or shower water in this case) is not sterile and can cause severe infections in the nasal passageways (also eyes, which is why you shouldn't wear contacts when in water). Because of the proximity to the brain and the nature of what you can sniff up your nose - its very dangerous.

Use proper neti pots with sterilised saline from chemists to irrigate sinuses.
