Anyone know what this is in my ear?

I know they probably aren't very good for you but I have one of those camera ear things to get wax out, to be fair it's been amazing and has stopped me having to get my ears syringed every 6 months.

Anyway... a few weeks ago I started to notice a tiny little white spot right inside my ear. Since then it's got bigger. It's not painful but seems to be hard when I touch it with the ear cleaner. It can also be slightly uncomfortable when touched with the cleaner but no other time. Managed to get a pic of it today. Is it something I need to see the Gp about or is it harmless?

Anyone know what this is in my ear?

It looks like a sebaceous cyst which are harmless but give an excellent gift of wormy goo.

moofolk · 05/04/2023 14:13

(Yes I followed you here from AIBU.)

Your ear canal is very inflamed. Take it easy with the cleaning tool as you can really damage the very fragile lining of the middle ear and you will get scarring or permanent damage. It's possible that the lump is an area of hypergranulation where you've had a little broken area that has tried to heal itself 'too much' but I would definitely recommend seeing your GP or an audiologist for an assessment. Don't take risks with your hearing, it's too important.

@moofolk haha hello again! If I could pop it I would just because I'm curious what is inside!

They do but be careful. If they get infected due to over enthusiastic squeezing they can turn violent and erupt into vicious carbuncles which need to be cut out in hospital. It happened to me. The resulting photos have been known to make people turn pale.

Do you have the photos? Asking for a friend.

You know the rules….

Ok. The progression of the perils of squeezing sebaceous cysts. Bit by bit as I’m eating lunch and the cheese on my crumpets will go funny if I’m too slow to eat them.

fig 1. Nice, normal, squeezable cyst. Causing no trouble, filling slowly, providing DH with the pleasure of extracting a satisfying amount of goo every few weeks.

Anyone know what this is in my ear?
CarbunclesAreUncles · 07/04/2023 13:10

It’s just above the mole.

fig 2 - getting a little angrier and less stuff coming out. Hurting now especially when squeezed.

CarbunclesAreUncles · 07/04/2023 13:11

Warning - following image is gross.

CarbunclesAreUncles · 07/04/2023 13:12

Carbuncle in all its glory. Bloody painful.

CarbunclesAreUncles · 07/04/2023 13:13

So they had to dig it out.

CarbunclesAreUncles · 07/04/2023 13:14

DO NOT SQUEEZE SEBACEOUS CYSTS!

Unless you want a crater in your shoulder.

tiredhadenough · 07/04/2023 13:15

@CarbunclesAreUncles OMG!! That is gruesome and amazing at the same time!! What did they do next? How long will it take to heal?

😱😱😱😱😱

CarbunclesAreUncles · 07/04/2023 13:25

It was about 18 months ago now I think… had to have a general anaesthetic to have it out.

Then to the nurse daily to have it cleaned and repacked with healing gel/gauze.

I healed quite quickly really but it twinged for a long time after due to the depth.

I think the last pic was taken by the nurse on my first visit post-op. When she first showed me I went “BLOODY HELL!!!” so loudly that another nurse popped her head in to check everything was ok 😂

custardbear · 07/04/2023 13:34

@CarbunclesAreUncles - that's huge, not seen anything like that since my now DH had a similar gaping wound after being bitten by something in Australia.
He came home with a spot, it was really sore and he asked me to burst it, clearly it was the opening to a huge reservoir of 🤢🤮. It was a Sunday night about 20 years ago, went to the emergency pharmacy for supplies, with a bit of tea towel stuffed in the hole, went to GP next day who was a bit 😱 but it went with packing and antibiotics thank goodness

dew141 · 07/04/2023 13:38

I was ok until the crater photo. Good grief, that's gruesome. Did it 'fill back in' when it healed?

Sort of - hang on I may have a pic…

Isn’t the human body amazing?

I'm very relieved on your behalf. That's quite some healing!
