To ask about popping boils

Lovely big boil / ingrown hair which has subsequently become infected on the back of my thigh. Been putting hot compress on it for the last day or so and it's getting bigger and bigger.

What's the most effective and satisfying way of getting all the gack out?

I did have magnesium something-or-other paste which I know is good for drawing things out but I can't find it.

Tips welcome!

A steralised needle. Do it!

IfYoureGonnaBreakMyHeart · 01/03/2023 19:33

You need to get this moved to sporners corner!

But they will want photos 🤣

HermioneWeasley · 01/03/2023 19:34

Hot flannel and then a sterilised needle. Photos are required, it’s mn law

IfYoureGonnaBreakMyHeart · 01/03/2023 19:36

@Suzi888 it's the law!

lunar1 · 01/03/2023 19:36

Make sure you have someone with a steady hand to film it!

I don't consider myself a sporner - too squeamish - unless it's mine

And what do I do with the needle?!

Clean needle and boil with something like surgical spirit. Squeeze boil to put some tension on it and see if you can see a “peak”. Shove needle into the peak. Hopefully gunk comes out. Wipe it and then clean the area thoroughly when done.

JerkintheMerkin · 02/03/2023 07:25

I usually use cover it with a hot flannel and gently roll it until it bursts. I couldn't fathom a needle anywhere near it.

Stick it in and enjoy the result!!! 😁

UnfinishedBusiness · 02/03/2023 10:39

How big/bad is it? If you are thinking it’s infected you probably need some antibiotics. Can you get a picture of it and get your surgery to review it?

Pressing works better than squeezing.
I am up for popping most things but do keep an eye on redness spreading or if you start to feel unwell

Mumsnut · 02/03/2023 14:19

Don’t squeeze- you will drive the infection deeper

out a finger each side and press gently straight down

How are things now @KeepYaHeadUp? Did you manage to burst the boil?

I did! It was a bit underwhelming in the end as it took 2 or 3 attempts over a few days to clear it out but all gone now

My shoulder abscess at Christmas turned out to be a no. Event in the end. It’s deflated to the size of a marrowfat pea now but has a boggy dent in it (guess that’s from where the GP stuck needles in it!!) and is quite painful when I accidentally touch it. Expecting it to fill up again next time I’m run down!!
