It's about 5mm in diameter, a round hard lump that bulges out from my finger. doesn't feel like it has liquid inside. Excuse my grotty nails please.

Do you hold something against it? It looks like the lump you get from holding a pen.

Ganglion Cyst.

FedUpToTheBackTooth · 17/12/2022 20:34

I think it is a ganglion cyst too.

DanteThunderstone · 17/12/2022 20:53

It is right on the joint. And osteoarthritis runs in the family. I'm only mid 40s though. 😔

Sorry OP, but mid 40s is spot on for when it OA can strike.

Oh damn.

I’m mid 50s now and it’s not causing any significant issues. It’s Saturday night, have a drink and try and forget about it, nothing much they can do anyway.

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 17/12/2022 21:11

I’m 51 and have developed three of these over the past few years, in the end joints of my first two fingers on my dominant hand. I assumed they were arthritis, but it helps to know a I was right, so thanks PPs.

If it’s any help, OP, mine were painful for a time after they first appeared, but have sort of burned out now. I find my tendons catch over them sometimes, which can be a bit painful, but flexing the joint makes them click back into place.

I don’t have any trouble knitting or sewing, so they haven’t stopped me doing anything like that.

Cdl84 · 17/12/2022 21:13

It looks very much like a ganglion

FannyFifer · 17/12/2022 21:33

I have this as well, 44 and now just realised its osteoarthritis so that's great news.

123Pol · 02/01/2023 23:49

Looks like it could be a myxoid cyst, Google it for pictures.
I had one on the side of my finger though they are often at the base of the nail.
mine had to be excised as I kept catching it.

feeona123 · 24/01/2023 16:22

Mucous Cyst! Getting mine removed next month! I’m 41, my nail is growing with a big dent in it, hopefully that will ease off a bit once it’s removed.

@DanteThunderstone
Eat/drink a lemon a day, with lots of water - flushes out the excess uric acid. I had a locked joint at 40 - so painful I splinted it myself, and the hand surgeon told me the rest of my fingers would go the same way. Nope. Some visual deformity, but nothing disabling. Musician's trick.
