Anyone had a myxoid cyst?

Didn’t know this forum existed! Have posted in chat as well.

I believe I have a myxoid cyst on my right index finger. It’s causing a deep indent on the nail which is getting on my nerves! I’m just wondering if anyone has had this with nail problems and got it removed?

It’s not very big but it causing damage to my nail…hope the pictures pick it up okay!

I had a plumb like this on my finger and ended up having a scan on it as it became huge, painful and inflamed over the course of about 18 months. It also caused a ridge in my finger nail. It was a ganglion and disappeared about 2 months after I started taking cod liver oil tablets. Might be a coincidence!

Oooh yes I have one of those at the moment too, together with the nail ridge which is a pain. Can't seem to add photos of it though. I gather that advice is just to leave it unless it gets huge or starts leaking.

feeona123 · 22/08/2022 22:42

@Harpydragon has the ridge grown out?

@MmeMeursault I really want it to go! The nail damage has increased over the last few months for such a small cyst. 😕

It's doing it very slowly. It's about half way up my nail at the moment!

I had one, kept popping it and eventually it hasn't returned and the nail has recovered

MmeMeursault · 02/09/2022 00:43

I was brave and stuck a pin in it the other day and nothing happened apart from it being v sore. I then accidentally knocked it a few days later while closing a drawer and much to my delight it started squirting something with the consistency and appearance of orange hair gel!

I tried to get my phone for photo proof but alas, 'twas out of reach and by the time I'd got it, the leaking had stopped.

All however is not lost as it's filled up a bit again since then and so I'll give it a poke in a few days when it's ready to blow one more time and make sure my phone's handy to record the momentous occasion.

I’ve been referred to a hand surgeon who is putting in a funding request to have it removed. If the funding request is turned down then I’ll be getting a steroid injection.

I have one on one of my toes
On several occasions I have used an ice pack and poked it with a needle and squeezed out a gel like liquid. Ganglion cyst I think. My nail is also affected

PeasInOurTime · 17/10/2022 23:18

Yes! Mine popped the other week and produced hair gel. I keep hoping it will refill.

PeasInOurTime · 17/10/2022 23:21

Before and after. I’ve a flat bit on the mail rather than a ridge. There’s a lump to the left of the joint which if I squeeze, now fills up the blustery bit by the mail bed 🤷‍♀️

I've got one on my finger too. The Dr lanced it and got loads of clear gel out of it. He said it would most likely fill again and gave me the green light to do it myself next time.

It took a couple of weeks and was very sore... but I lanced it and got double the amount of gel out...

The sad thing is is that this type of cyst is a sign of arthritis, which I've now been told I have ☹️

The cyst is still there. It's sore and ugly. NHS won't remove it. Have booked for a private consultation to see if I can get it done privately.

Has anyone had one of these removed successfully?

PeasInOurTime · 08/11/2024 23:36

Mine has cleared up all by itself since I posted. GP wasn’t interested at all. It probably burst 5 or 6 times over several weeks then just went.

This is it now. The joint is still lumpy but the cyst has gone and my nail is back to normal.

Glad I stumbled on this as I noticed the start of a groove like this on one of my fingernails, today, and wondered if it might be osteoarthritis related as that joint is somewhat swollen.
