OMG I have a ganglion cyst!

The cyst I have longed for all my life has finally appeared! It's on my inside wrist and getting bigger. I'm desperate to puncture it and squeeze the jelly stuff out but I looked up ganglions on inner wrists and they are usually right next to an artery.

So now it's just mocking me.

Husband has offered to whack it with a complete works of Charles Dickens but I'm still holding out for that jelly!

I had a tiny one and I managed to squeeze it. There was a satisfying "pop" feeling but definitely no goop.

JamieNorthlife · 05/09/2021 23:42

Don't whack it, you can hurt your hand. Sometimes when ganglions burst they come back because the small capsule just fills up again.

You can ask you GP to refer you to a hand orthopaedic clinic. If the Ganglion is putting pressure on a nerve or causing weakness, they will removed it during day surgery and you will need to have hand therapy for the scar and to get your hand strong again.

I had a massive one for many years and once it burst after a fell on ice but it come back months later. It was so large that we named it and considered it part of the family. Grin

I have one too, on the top of my wrist. It's probably about 1.5cm across. I did actually whack it with a book a couple of months ago and it's already come back Hmm It is making my wrist feel very achy and painful so am not sure if I should see the GP or if I just have to put up with it?!

SusieSusieSoo · 06/09/2021 00:13

I had one when ds was small - from being a baby until about 3. It was caused by lifting him all the time. Disappeared completely once he started walking

SusieSusieSoo · 06/09/2021 00:14

He started walking earlier than 3 obv but I stopped the lifting and carrying much later...

Stressybetty · 06/09/2021 00:16

I've had one on the inside of my wrist for years. GP said if it wasn't causing any discomfort or affecting me using my hand just to leave it alone.

Purpoole · 06/09/2021 00:20

I developed one when I was pregnant under my tongue! Everytime it popped it would fill with slimy stuff and was a nightmare. It disappeared for good shortly after I gave birth.

RuggerHug · 07/09/2021 13:13

My DF had one, had the surgery and it came back. Only way to get rid completely is have 2 children that you bring ice skating and have then take off in separate directions while holding your hands and whack yourself into the wall to save the smallests face. :D

I've one that comes and goes, tipsy sibling with a toy hammer works. Good luck!

@LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone

Have none of you book bashers seen the episode of Doc Martin with just this scenario? You might want to think twice about it!

My mother had a ganglion and it required quite major surgery.

I was thinking of that episode when I read hit it with a book Confused
hocusspocuss · 07/09/2021 15:53

I'm not about to smash it with anything, so fret not. Most I will do is maybe stick a needle in it. But I will probably wimp out.

I have one on my wrist and it comes and goes. My doctor told me not to hit it with a book and said there was no point in draining as it would come back again.

sashh · 08/09/2021 13:20

This is hilarious…I have a ganglion cyst on my hand and when I googled it, the search kept predicting “hit with a book” and I was thinking WTF?! I had no idea this was a thing

Another name for them is a 'Bible bump'.

I was threatening to use a book on mine, my GP actually handed over needles and sterilizing wipes.

He knows I'm not kidding.

It has refused to come back.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 09/09/2021 22:24

I had one on the top of my foot. One day I flexed my foot and I heard a “pop” and then over the next day or so the cyst went down but my whole floor seemed to swell with the fluid. It finally went down only to return in a few weeks. This time it was aching so I bashed it with the complete works of Shakespeare. It did burst under the skin and the fluid drained back into my body and it never came back.

Anordinarymum · 09/09/2021 22:31

I have ganglions. one on each arm and one on my wrist. Sometimes they get bigger and sometimes they go down but they are always there.

If you bash them with a book all you will do is to displace the fluid and they will come back.

If they become too big/hurt or awkward your doctor can draw the fluid out with a needle
I live with mine. they make me special :)

Luluem · 09/09/2021 22:34

I had one removed many years ago. The surgeon told me the same thing - the amount of people he’d seen with the cyst still there but a nice new set of fractured hand bones to accompany it 😬

PearlyRising · 09/09/2021 22:36

omg, just go to a doctor!! don't bash it with a book or stick a needle in it!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 09/09/2021 22:37

i have a teeny bump on my right wrist, just over (up and in) from the outside knobby wrist joint...I think it is very slowly getting bigger and I keep meaning to ask when I am at the GP but I never go!
A year or two ago I poked it with a pin and "juice" came out, and then nothing happened. I might hit it with something.
It is tiny though, maybe half a cm round and tall??

Oddbutnotodd · 09/09/2021 22:38

I had mine removed by surgery 30 years ago. Never came back . It was on my foot.

Sushiii · 13/09/2021 17:50

I also have one - it makes my wrist ache but don't know if it needs looking at. I first noticed it about 4 months ago.

OMG I have a ganglion cyst!
kissmelittleass · 13/09/2021 22:20

Is anyone else's a slight pinky light purple colour? Mines on my foot as I said earlier but has been that colour for years lt looks more like a strawberry mark but it's not as red obviously

FizzyLizzie · 13/09/2021 22:26

I had a small one on top of my foot. My GP told me to whack it with a book. I was very sceptical but I did it, my foot went really hot, almost like I could feel the fluid dissipating and then it was gone 😁

Sushiii · 13/09/2021 23:00

I tried whacking mine a couple of months ago! It went down a bit for a few weeks but is now back to its original size Sad

Sushiii · 13/09/2021 23:01

@FizzyLizzie I'm surprised your GP told you to do that as I thought the standard medical advice was to leave well alone as you can cause more damage than good (didn't stop me trying though Grin).

I was surprised too and I am also surprised it hasn’t come back

Mamamamasaurus · 15/09/2021 10:29
