Home treatment for infected cyst

I have an infected cyst under my armSad
Have been taking antibiotics for 7 days and it is not changing drastically but not getting any better.
It happened before about 3 yrs ago and I had to have an operation to remove it but it has returned. GP via Skype now says not possible due to coronavirus, she didn't have any advice other than Abx.
It's about the size of a pecan! and deep purple. quite deep in as no head or dischargeSad Not painful just a bit sore
What can I do to get rid of it at home, or do I just wait.
Thank you for any advice.

Bumping for you.

Zebrasandfairytales · 04/04/2020 19:43

Have you got any TCP in?

Windyatthebeach · 04/04/2020 19:53

Sugar and soap poultice?

PainauChocolat12 · 04/04/2020 19:56

Hot flannels on it.

Zebrasandfairytales · 04/04/2020 20:34

Do regular hot flannel compresses, dry thoroughly and dab with TCP if you have it. Let us know how you get on.

cormorantes · 04/04/2020 20:53

thank you for your suggestions. I had been putting hot flannels on but not sure if it is too deep. No TCP but will get some. I do have dettol

Is the aim of hot flannels to get stuff out or just for it to go?

Potentially it may help drain it because the heat expands the blood vessels underneath the skin and increases blood flow. When I had one I applied a warm compress and it burst without me applying pressure, the heat obviously helped. The warmth may also help you sooth any pain/inflammation.

cormorantes · 05/04/2020 21:59

After your helpful advice and many warm compresses it started to ooze and I squeezed, not too hard, quite a lot of stuff from it, but it still looks very red and inflamed.
I have covered it with dettol soaked cotton wool.
Any advice on What now?Confused
I'm worried it will get worse.

Keep dab in dettol every couple of hours and try to get air to it, make sure you wash the area thoroughly/carefully a couple of times a day. Now is not the time to get an infection if you can avoid it but if it looks like it has more of a head in a couple of days you could try warm compresses and see if that helps it drain some more. I guess just use your judgement based on what you think it looks/feels like day to day.

Try magnesium sulphate paste available from pharmacies for about £1.50 for a small tub.
Large blob around the area and cover with an occlusive cling film dressing to keep in place. Ask your chemist for small tegaderm dressing. Mag sulph is osmotic, which means it draws fluid (and puss) out

I have a recurring abscess and hot flannels help, the heat will help it come to a head and as others have said dabbing TCP on the abscess. Hot baths with Epsom salt helped my abscess so so much and it came to a head almost straight away. Once it has started to drain keep it as clean as possible! Apply antiseptic cream and keep covered.

Careful with dettol on the skin...I think it might need to be diluted...do check the label

My mother had similar. The only thing that helped was very old fashioned poultices of bread and hot milk held on. Once it cooled, a new one. It took a couple of days but it drained the whole thing and dried out two cysts as well. Her GP was gobsmacked and now suggests it to anyone with inflamed cysts. Hope you aren’t in too much pain OP.
