my cat has a big mobile lump on his cheek. Suddenly appeared. No apparent pain. Vet can't see him til Monday. Am secretly hoping it bursts itself.

I'm a Vet Nurse! Bring him to me! Oh how I love big fat abscesses. Grin

SilverHairedCat · 16/02/2018 11:53

Ah, poor wee thing! How's his breath? Do his teeth seem OK?
Is there a head on it?

MrsMarigold · 16/02/2018 11:56

Our cat once had an abcess, it was huge and when the vet squeezed it, the pus and the SMELL was unbelievable. She is now an old cat and never gets into fights now.

RelentlessSylvia · 16/02/2018 12:00

Part of me is scared it might be a tumour but it does seem absessy. His breath is fine but his nearer eye is watering. Our old cat had an absess on her tail/butt interface and when the vet burst it, it smelled like the foulest fires of hell.

God I won't but it's soooo tempting to sneak up beside him and pop it with a needle.

Try it, I bet the relief will be huge

RelentlessSylvia · 16/02/2018 12:28

what if he murders me?

OP posts:
MrsMarigold · 16/02/2018 12:40

Wrap him in a towel

RelentlessSylvia · 16/02/2018 12:44

Ok, I just stuck him with a sterilised needle and milked his lump into a hanky. He didn't get cross at all which is very unlike the mardy old grump. Clear fluid, and a beautifully satisfying crunch sound/sensation as the lump collapsed. Hope he's feeling relieved.

Also hoping it heals before Monday so I can now dodge the 40 quid vet fee!

Bathe it with warm salty water and pick any scab off it so it doesn't form another abscess. If you keep it clean, it should be fine.

RelentlessSylvia · 16/02/2018 13:05

Thanks, will do.

Good work.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 16/02/2018 13:21

IT really is a thing. There was a palpable wave of thigh rubbing when I described old cat's abscess bursting.(the word puthering was used) Fucking honked though.

RelentlessSylvia · 16/02/2018 13:27

You know what's odd? I think, given the lack of pong and apparently dry hankie but also given the rapid lump deflation, that he had a lump full of air? Is that a thing??

OP posts:
RelentlessSylvia · 22/02/2018 19:38

update, I just squeezed the smaller remaining lump and it made a CRUNCH sound and decanted a lot of fluid into a hankie. Cat tolerated it then growled at the end.

When I only just pregnant with DC1, My cat’s anal gland got blocked and he took to rubbing his arse on everything, really vigorously, with a strange hypnotised look on his face. Very unnerving. I took him to the vets, who drained it as I watched, and then looked shocked as I vomited in the surgery sink. The smell was mind altering.

BettyBaggins · 01/03/2018 01:46

My cat had black heads on his chin.

ShutUpRobert · 01/03/2018 19:40

Did he let you tackle them?

MissBeehiving · 01/03/2018 19:50

My white cat had blackheads on his chin too. He loved havIng them squeezed. What a fabulous animal. 😁

BettyBaggins · 01/03/2018 20:43

Yup, he put up with it, some were a bit stubborn and all 'head'.

Oldraver · 03/03/2018 14:33

I had a cat that loved fighting with rats and was forever getting abscesses... I loved dealing with them, but the smell was horrific.

He had a few the vet had to lance, including a massive one on his chin. Vet initially thought it was a solid tumour and was surprised it was an abscess.. That was fun getting anti-biotics into him with a big lanced chins

Tinkofhousepan · 12/03/2018 06:52

My cat got into an altercation whilst I was abroad. My mum is a medic and lanced her abscess and washed it with corsodyl. Took her to vet and the dr said if she gets another infection to give her an antibiotic. Mum took the name down and discovered it was the same as the bright yellow banana medicine we had as kids! When infection recurred mum gave her the banana stuff and it cleared up fine :)
