What's wrong with my manky fingernail?

My thumb nail is all wavy with a deep pit in it. I assume I'd thumped it, but looking down near the skin, it's dipped again so looks like I've got more wonkiness to come.

It's also sore under the nail, like I've poked something under the nail.

Is this a doctor thing?

My husband has had that on both his thumbnails for about 10 years, and has never been able to find out what it is! Different Drs have prescribed a variety of anti fungal creams/tablets and none of them have made any difference. The last Dr's best guess was some sort of permanent damage to the nail bed, but as it's on both sides it seems unlikely. Sorry not to be of any use, but it's an ongoing mystery in this household!

I made dh scrub his thumbs to within an inch of their lives on our wedding day, but they still looked a bit grubby!
