Over the next week, we're running a Q&A about fruit juice with Fiona Hunter, a qualified independent nutritionist and member of the British Dietetic Association. You may have read a number of stories in the papers about fruit juice and have some questions about its role in the diet for you and your family. For example, can 100% juice be one of your 5 a day, what goes into juice, when is it best to drink juice and how much to help ensure my children have a balanced diet?

Fiona has a BSc (Hons) Nutrition Degree and a postgraduate diploma in Dietetics from Kings College London. She worked as a Registered Dietitian in the NHS for seven years and for the last 15 years has worked as an independent nutrition consultant, writer and broadcaster.

Post your questions to Fiona before 9am on Friday 12th December and we'll send over a selection to which she will provide answers. There is a £150 Waitrose voucher up for grabs for one lucky Mumsnetter who posts a question. We will post Fiona's answers w/c 12 January.

This Q&A is sponsored by Tropicana.

nsluker · 08/12/2014 18:33

billybear · 08/12/2014 18:57

I am diabetic so how much fresh juice should I really drink a day . I love it

From a dietary perspective, is it better to drink juice diluted with water (all natural) or fruit squash diluted with water - lower sugar but full of artificial sweetener?

Drania · 08/12/2014 21:46

Sorry if this is a repeat question, but which juice is better (less sugar content, healthier...), from concentrate or not from concentrate?

kkhimji2001 · 08/12/2014 21:48

does fruit juice have too much sugar?

Funkyferret · 09/12/2014 00:26

Is there a vegetable juice that could be blended with fruit juice to make it healthier and taste good to all the family?

peanutmum111 · 09/12/2014 07:51

Really concerned not to develop 'a sweet tooth' with my children with fruit juices. What do you suggest I look for on the label?
Also I want real fruit juice, again what do I look for on the label.

JoJoBaldwin · 09/12/2014 09:44

I stopped buying fruit juice long ago on account of stories about tooth enamel erosion and sugar content. My daughter eats 2-3 pieces of fruit a day, does this make up for the lack of juice? Water is her main drink.

CathBookworm · 09/12/2014 10:43

I'm quite concerned about the high sugar content of juices-what kind of serving would you suggest for a toddler? One small glass per day? Is it healthier to eat the whole fruit where possible?

selloveday · 09/12/2014 12:32

With the conflicting advice on whether fruit juice is healthy due to the potential sugar content, are there any juices that are better than others for children?

SaigonSaigon · 09/12/2014 13:28

Is like to know which juice overall would rate the best in terms of sugars, nutrition, etc. thanks.

BeCool · 09/12/2014 14:17

Does fruit juice have any place in a modern balanced healthy diet?

How does the pasteurization process affect the nutritional value of commercial fruit juices?

sharond101 · 09/12/2014 14:45

How healthy/unhealthy are the sugars in fruit juice?

spayne89 · 09/12/2014 15:17

Is there a fruit juice that is better for children than others?

lilmiztam22 · 09/12/2014 17:30

Fruit juice contains a lot of natural sugar but it that just as bad for you as added sugar?

FreedomHuntress · 09/12/2014 18:12

Which blender/juicer would you recommend?

RMonkton · 09/12/2014 18:44

What is the healthiest fruit to give my child which causes minimal enamel erosion?

GetKnitted · 09/12/2014 19:39

I was wondering about the manufacturing process, for typical juices, do they wash the wax off the fruit before they squash it? Or do we drink wax? Or do they use unwaxed fruit?

compstruck · 09/12/2014 19:49

We don't seem to see pear juice as an alternative yet isn't it less acidic and more allergenic than citrus fruits?

SchoolRunSchoolDash · 09/12/2014 19:58

I am guessing that fresh juice with bits in is the healthiest as it has more fibre, then next fresh without bits, last from concentrate. I would like to know as I am busy working mum with three children and concentrate is so much easier to buy and store. Once a fresh juice is opened then must be finished soon or goes off , but that always seems not to happen and then lot gets wasted which I hate (tight family budget)

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 09/12/2014 21:26

Do you think all nutritionists should have a degree in dietetics? If not, how do we avoid the charlatans?

Pinkshoes8 · 09/12/2014 23:04

My children only have fruit juice with their meals. Other then that they have water. Our dentist recommend this so the juice doesn't damage the enamel on their teeth.
One of my children can not have too much sugar and can not have any refined sugar our dietitian recommend giving juice at meal times or just after as the sugar is absorbed differently.

gemima27 · 09/12/2014 23:19

Can drinking orange juice with or before food stop the body absorbing fats?

phillie1 · 10/12/2014 09:10

If you drink the fruit juice through a straw, will that lessen the impact on teeth?
