Over the next week, we're running a Q&A about fruit juice with Fiona Hunter, a qualified independent nutritionist and member of the British Dietetic Association. You may have read a number of stories in the papers about fruit juice and have some questions about its role in the diet for you and your family. For example, can 100% juice be one of your 5 a day, what goes into juice, when is it best to drink juice and how much to help ensure my children have a balanced diet?

Fiona has a BSc (Hons) Nutrition Degree and a postgraduate diploma in Dietetics from Kings College London. She worked as a Registered Dietitian in the NHS for seven years and for the last 15 years has worked as an independent nutrition consultant, writer and broadcaster.

Post your questions to Fiona before 9am on Friday 12th December and we'll send over a selection to which she will provide answers. There is a £150 Waitrose voucher up for grabs for one lucky Mumsnetter who posts a question. We will post Fiona's answers w/c 12 January.

This Q&A is sponsored by Tropicana.

IS juice just as bad for your teeth as tea and coffee?

Cailin7 · 07/12/2014 18:52

My DS's like drinking pure apple juice or orange juice, I encourage them to drink natural fruit juice, milk and water. My only concern is can the fruit juice damage their teeth or braces

BloodFlower · 07/12/2014 18:56

How potentially damaging or good for our health is tea?

iwasyoungonce · 07/12/2014 19:03

How much fruit juice would you recommend is healthy to drink a day/ a week? And which fruit juice would you recommend as being the best for your health?

ButterflyOfFreedom · 07/12/2014 19:11

Why is juice only classed as one of your five a day regardless of how much you drink of it?

Gilla01 · 07/12/2014 19:12

I like to juice fruit and vegetables, generally mixing them.

Are veg better than fruit, or the other way, or are they both the same?

I've always assumed that fresh juice is preferable to concentrates - is this correct?

beeelaine · 07/12/2014 19:14

Is there a best time of day to drink juice? Our son is 13 now and only seems to want food and drink later, he especially likes to eat and drink before bed and I am worried that letting him have sugary things like juice at night is not good??

nettymay · 07/12/2014 19:19

I am a little bit worried about juice affecting our teeth. Should we drink milk or similar after juice or just clean teeth straight away?

janeyf1 · 07/12/2014 19:20

If I make juice with a blender is it healthier for the little ones than no added sugar juices bought ready made?

HelenSw4les · 07/12/2014 19:24

Which fruit juice has the least sugar content.

jayz268 · 07/12/2014 19:28

Is pure fruit really bad for children, or just good in moderation?

itsonlysubterfuge · 07/12/2014 19:31

I have multiple questions, sorry for any repeats and if I'm only allowed one question Grin.

What benefits/disadvantages other than fibre are there versus 100% juice and 100% fruit/veg smoothie (i.e. pureed fruits/veg)? Which would be a better pick for an overweight adult and a picky toddler?

Which is the best kind of juice to choose (for example, blueberry, apple, cranberry, etc.) when thinking about important vitamins and minerals we need in our diet?

Is there a big difference between juice from concentrate, fresh juice, and cold pressed juice or is it too minimal to matter?

When making fresh juice at home how fast do the minerals/vitamins/etc. really leave the juice? I've read they start to diminish as soon as you make the juice and should therefore consume it as soon as you make it, rather than make a big batch and keep it in the fridge.

gd2011 · 07/12/2014 19:42

Is there any difference in nutritional content between cartons of juice made from concentrate and those labelled as freshly squeezed?

TheWindowDonkey · 07/12/2014 19:45

So, which is best/worst for kids teeth? Fruit juice or dried fruits?

TheWindowDonkey · 07/12/2014 19:47

Netty, just in case you don't get an newer....there was a thread in here a couple of weeks ago saying you should always wait 20 minutes after eating/drinking anything as eating temporarily softens the enamel!

pennwood · 07/12/2014 19:47

Is it true different fruit juices are more beneficial to certain areas of the body such as pomegranate for boy's prostate glands?

maisiesnan · 07/12/2014 19:52

My Granddaughter is 4 and drinks a lot of bottled juice ( ie fruit shoots) would it be better for her to have fresh fruit juice

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 07/12/2014 19:56

Which is better (or less bad) juice diluted with water, or squash (regular, high juice or no added sugar)?

Littleturkish · 07/12/2014 20:03

I don't drink juice at all because of the sugar content, but will eat fruit as part of my five a day (normally never more than three pieces a day, and certainly not more than 14 a week).

I am very aenemic, could there be any benefit in drinking orange juice rather than eating one with regards to help the absorbtion of iron from other foods?

Spirael · 07/12/2014 20:13

Waitrose are doing a low calorie chilled fruit juice with stevia extract. Is this any better for you than the usual chilled fruit juice?

KittyKat88 · 07/12/2014 20:17

What is the maximum amount of fruit juice I can safely give to my children daily/weekly? At the moment, my DDs (ages 2 & 4) love their fresh apple juice (not from concentrate) and although I try to limit it to breakfast only, they occasionally have extra with either lunch or dinner. I make sure they have good oral hygene.

Taffeta · 07/12/2014 20:19

Are all fruit juices equal?

If you had to pick your top 3 in terms of nutrition, which ones would they be? Or is it better to mix them?

SpottyTits · 07/12/2014 20:23

I Ha bad teeth but love fruit juice, which juice would be the best as in low sugar for my teeth?

alsproject · 07/12/2014 20:24

Are the fruit juices from concentrate and better/worse than the freshly squeezed varieties?

sugar1975 · 07/12/2014 20:24

The Governement are clamping down on the intake of fruit juices in school. Is this really necessary? Is juice better than squash?
