You may have heard that Davina McCall is supporting Sky Ride this year - a national campaign between Sky and British Cycling encouraging thousands people of all ages and abilities to get on a bike and discover the benefits cycling can offer. In honour of this, we’re offering MNers a chance to post questions for Davina themed around cycling for the whole family.

Davina will also be attending Sky Ride Liverpool on 7 September, one of the many Sky Ride Big Bike events taking place across the UK. These events give thousands of people the chance to enjoy a fun day cycling a traffic-free route through their city or town with friends and family.
Sky has said “Cycling in the UK is more popular than ever with a million more Brits now cycling regularly as a result of Sky’s partnership with British Cycling and as excitement reached fever pitch this summer with the Tour de France visiting the UK, there has never been a better time to be inspired to get on a bike.”

Post your questions to Davina here before 31st August and we will send 20 questions over for her to respond to. We will then post her responses back on the thread on 5th September.

Everyone who adds a question (regardless of whether it's answered or not) will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win £150 vouchers for Marks and Spencer.

This Q&A is sponsored by Sky.

Thanks
MNHQ

What could be done to encourage more people to get out of their cars and onto bikes as a means of transport and not just as sport?

mjmooseface · 22/08/2014 17:49

I haven't ridden a bike in years now! Since I was a kid, really. Now I have a son - who's nearly 2 - I would love to hire a bike and go for bike rides with him in a seat attached to my bike - just until I get the hang of it and then I might get my own bike with child seat eventually!

Do you have any advice to someone like me who hasn't ridden a bike in a while who wants to take to the cycle paths and who may lack a bit of confidence?

Before, I rode with my dad leading the way, now I'm the parent and the one in control and responsible, what do I need to know before getting on my bike about road safety and the rules of the road as they apply to cyclists? I'm not even a driver and cycling on the road makes me feel nervous and I would appreciate any advice you can give me and anyone else in a position like me!

Do you think the Tour of France being in Yorkshire has motivated people to take up cycling or was it just something fun to watch while it was here?

KateOxford · 22/08/2014 20:52

How do you manage to fit in your training schedule with children, do you have any tips for remaining motivated and dedicating time to training or any foods/vitamins which boost energy?

Starlingsintheslipstream · 22/08/2014 21:07

What do you wear for cycling? Any recommendations for clothing for someone who is not your average size 8/10 as most manufacturers of cycle clothing seem to assume we are? I'm a 16 and struggle to get cycle clothing to fit.

What's the best way of transporting bikes on a car? DH has bought a contraption to fit on the back of the car & it took an hour to attach 2 bikes to it. I don't think I could reach the one you put on the roof. Are the more expensive ones better?

vanilla61 · 23/08/2014 08:56

What is your favourite energy giving snack that you take with you on a long bike ride?

How do you keep going when you have reached 'the wall'?
What do you do that keeps you going when your body is telling you to stop? How much is physical and how much of it is mental?

Thank you Thanks

Do you think you can ever be too old to learn to ride a bike ?. I've just turned 48 and all my children can ride bikes but I never learned to ride one not even as a child as my parents wouldn't allow me anywhere near a bike as they thought it was too dangerous!

SacreBlue · 24/08/2014 03:20

My son learnt to ride a bike at primary school, and was riding round his city at a young age on the great cycle paths provided, and on the road.

I asked him not to, after a cyclist was killed near us, on an established cycle path.

I would love him to cycle in the city again (he still does in the country) but I am too scared.

What do you think would help cyclists in cities be safe?

Dolallytats · 24/08/2014 10:19

As a child I didn't learn to ride a bike (thanks to an overprotective mum!!) but it looks like fun. Do you have any tips for a complete novice on how to master the art? (Make that a short, fat, 40 year old novice who's embarrassed by her lack of cycling skills, but would still like to give it a go as long as no-one can see her!!)
