This is the feedback thread for the 11 Mumsnetters who attended an exclusive DFS event in London to be matched to their ideal sofa.

Here’s what DFS has to say: “We know that choosing a sofa that’s right for you is something which everyone wants to get right, but it can sometimes feel like a challenge. At DFS, we have nearly 50 years of experience designing and hand-making sofas and want to make the sofa buying process as simple as possible. ‘Match Made at DFS’ was a chance for Mumsnetters to see how simple sofa shopping can be, when you consult those in the know.

On Wednesday 19th July we invited 12 Mumsnetters along to be ‘Match Made’ to their ideal sofa. During the match making process the Mumsnetters and DFS sofa experts chatted in detail about their sofa requirements. From colour and style, to product protection and financing, the Mumsnetters put the know-how of the DFS experts to the test. At the end of the match making process, the Mumsnetters were given the chance to choose the right sofa to meet their needs and suit their lifestyle.”

See the DFS 'match-making' process in action with their 'Ultimate Sofa Buying Guide' video here:

Attendees, please answer the following questions on your experience at the event

  • What did you enjoy most about the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Do you think that DFS has a good selection of sofas?
  • What did you think of DFS before attending the event?
  • Did your view of DFS change after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?
  • Would you recommend DFS to a friend after attending the ‘Match Made’ event?

Non-attendees, please answer the following question to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher.

  • What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

Thanks and good luck!

Definitely the size. I have made the mistake before of buying a sofa that was too big to get in my house so now I always take my tape measure to ensure that it is going to fit!

7flipper7 · 09/08/2017 18:34

Non Attendee: Most important to me is the comfort factor and making sure it isn't too large taking over my room.

createbeauty · 09/08/2017 18:44

Non-attendee: Ensure the material is appropriate for the household (i.e. leather sofa instead of material sofa for kids and a dog). Also make sure it's VERY comfortable for laying on. No hard arms for us!

dragon60 · 09/08/2017 19:38

Need to remember its probably going to be with you for a number of years, so it has to be comfortable, practical and able to keep on looking good.

sarah861421 · 09/08/2017 20:06

Is it comfortable to sit on and sleep on, can I clean it, will it still look good in 5 years

pongopig · 09/08/2017 20:16

Non attendee - it has to be tall enough at the back to be able to rest my head. I hate it when you can't do that Smile

Annieg1234 · 09/08/2017 20:19

Non Attendee- Washable covers are always a great idea and also have a good sit down because there is nothing worse than cushions that slide forward etc

FindTheCupForMax · 09/08/2017 20:52

Main thing for me is usability, you see so many people 'test' sofas by sitting all prim and proper on the end of them for 2 minutes, how often are you ever going to sit like that at home? Check the people who are going to be using it regularly all fit comfortably, sit back and make yourself comfy, put your feet up (after taking shoes off and asking sales assistant) is it comfy with a cushion, is it comfy without etc

With four children wipe clean would be good and comfort of course

juju3 · 09/08/2017 21:03

comfort is more important than looks

jandoc · 09/08/2017 21:36

price and comfort but looks is a big issue too

HelenSw4les · 09/08/2017 21:43

Comfort, if you can't get comfortable on your sofa it's not worth having no matter what the colour or size is.

I was really focussed on making sure it would fit through the door. We had lots of trouble removing an older, big sofa that was left when we moved in.
So we went for a smaller one. But, you have to remember you'll sit on it for many hours. It has to be comfortable for everyone. My husband was right. Lesson learnt!

emmmaaa26 · 09/08/2017 22:33

The colour and fabric.

I think the most important thing to remember is to match the sofa to your lifestyle i.e. If you are likely to have sticky hands near get something washable. If you want to schlomp of an evening have something wide enough to lie comfortably on..

angeleyes2022 · 09/08/2017 23:23

The most important thing for us as a family is comfort, but also to ensure that the material is washable! Sticky fingers are forever being stuck to things! X

Holliewantstobehot · 09/08/2017 23:30

Non attendee - size first as I have a very narrow hallway. Then washability and how easy it will be to keep nice - ds is very messy (dyspraxia). Then comfort - heaven is a sprawl on the sofa with Netflix when I have a child free hour.

del2929 · 10/08/2017 00:08

non atendee--

is it stain resistant. also can it withstand it being used a s a trampoline lol

tubbyj · 10/08/2017 01:30

Most important thing is the size the sofa has to fit and look appropriate

kateandme · 10/08/2017 07:11

size and importantly depth.hate short seated sofas where you feel you legs hang over the edge.i want to be able to ie on it with width either side of me not rolling off the edge with one small move.can you lie down on it.
does it support your back when sat upright.
can it fit whole family
how easily will it wear

Ikea1234 · 10/08/2017 08:17

I am a non attendee- I would says it on it lots in the showroom, make sure it doesn't have fixed cushions so you can clean it easily, and measure to make sure it not only fits the space in the living room, but the doorways and entry points into the room! (can you tellI speak from experience?!😂)

daniel1996 · 10/08/2017 08:37

Non attendee.

What do you think is the most important thing to remember when buying a sofa?

As it is a large investment it needs to be durable comfortable and the colour that is practical and matches the rest of you living room decor. And from past experience you need to be able to get it into your home (an not through your living room window due to the size) Thanks

beckyinman · 10/08/2017 10:25

Non-attendee - the most important thing when looking for a sofa is thinking what fits into your life. Do you have little children, pets, massive teenagers, visitors round all the time, a bad back? Then use that to help you shape the design/ colours etc

kamaxtra · 10/08/2017 11:06

Most important thing: Does it have good back support? Long-term, you want a sofa that will support and protect your back and not one that makes you hunch or curl up.

For me the most important thing is picturing it in my room (does it suit my décor?)
