Ahead of the UK release of new film Florence Foster Jenkins on 6th May, around 35 Mumsnetters attended a special preview of the film with a guest. Read the comments below for their reviews.

NON ATTENDEES If you didn’t attend, in the true spirit of Florence, we would love to hear about the 'talents' you think you have but in reality you know you're not that good at but do anyway because you love them or even the 'talents' your DC have which only a parent would really love - add your comment below and you'll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice and a film poster signed by Meryl Streep.

Here’s the film’s synopsis:
“Starring Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant and Simon Helberg and directed by Stephen Frears (Philomena, The Queen), the hilarious and moving new comedy drama FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS is the inspirational true story of the legendary New York heiress and socialite who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great singer. The film celebrates the human spirit, the power of music and the passion of amateurs everywhere. The voice Florence (Streep) heard in her head was beautiful, but to everyone else it was hilariously awful. Her husband and manager, St Clair Bayfield (Grant), an aristocratic English actor, was determined to protect his beloved Florence from the truth. But when Florence decided to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944, St Clair knew he faced his greatest challenge.”

My eldest (almost 8) wants to enter his "'s got talent" show with his singing. His passion and enthusiasm is just a joy but his voice is, well, not. I have tried my best to tell him that he should choose something else but I honestly don't think that he gets me. Without saying "oi... stop!" there's not much else I can do. I've even had the "my nan thinks I'm fabulous and Mrs X at school says that too"... well he is fabulous in his flamboyance and effort but SERIOUSLY! How can I let him learn the hard way - he's going to be torn apart!!

zippyants · 17/05/2016 15:57

Can't wait to see this film. Hopefully it will live up to expectations!

lexiemac13 · 17/05/2016 16:07

I always thought I was an okay singer. Not amazing, but reasonably good. Then my mum played me a video she had recorded of me singing at about 17 years old and my goodness, it was awful. Also, my daughter always says it sounds like I'm crying when I sing haha!

linheiner · 17/05/2016 16:21

Non Attendee - I love doing Zumba and in my head I'm moving in a stylish and quick fashion in time to the music - in reality I'm a bit behind and probably in the wrong direction! :)

cookie09 · 17/05/2016 19:09

NON TESTER

I think in my brain that i'm a talented interior designer, i believe everything i do around the home looks fantastic and oozes class however i don't believe my other half and kids believe so. Am i getting old fashioned and not even know it, has my life flashed before my eyes and I've aged 20 years over night. Who knows, maybe i have but i'm not going to let them bring me down ... Wonder if they can do better? I'd like to see them try :P

cookie09 · 17/05/2016 19:10

MEANT TO SAY NON ATTENDEE :o SEE CAN'T EVEN GET THAT RIGHT Grin

maria08k · 17/05/2016 20:19

Our son Ronan can "Armpit trump" and "under knee trump" the theme of Happy Birthday!! Its quite that party piece...however we tell him its best not too when its his great nanna's birthday!! Blush

sjl19 · 17/05/2016 21:31

I really want to see this film. I have limited talents but I'd like to think that I'm a good singer - my children will probably say otherwise!

pinkspideruk · 17/05/2016 22:26

I didnt attend the screening

My 'talent' I think I am really funny and make up jokes and have a little comedy routine which amuses me but probably not my audience as much (usually made up of H 2 D 6 and the cats haha)

janemphoto · 17/05/2016 22:55

Love doing graphic design, although I can't do it as well as I would like to. Would love to learn more but never have the time.

Jocelynne123 · 17/05/2016 23:44

My talent or non talent is singing. I like to think I the next Whitney she I'm driving but I know I can't really sing haha. My daughters 'talent' is writing poems bless her. She's always been brilliant at English and writing stories but poetry isnt one of her strong suits. Xx

cathyov · 18/05/2016 09:43

I did not attend but one of my newly learnt skills is hula hooping which I took up with my older daughters. I felt really pleased to have mastered it but then watch my daughters as they text and chat on the phone too - I have not managed multi tasking yet!

snare · 18/05/2016 11:40

My children always say they are the best at everything :)

TiggersAngel7774 · 18/05/2016 12:33

Non tester

I love to sing but hubby says i sound like a strangled cat

steveyh · 18/05/2016 13:43

I'd love to see the movie but haven't thus far. As far as talents go I excel at being mediocre, in both baking and drawing. I love to create stuff, whether that's cakes or pictures, but they never seem to turn out exactly as I'd hoped.

shoebedo434 · 18/05/2016 14:11

non tester - I do a great Chewbecca impression from Star Wars, at least I think it's great. I also really like singing but I am really bad so I do it in my car with the music really loud to drown myself out lol

ICanSeeYourPixelss · 18/05/2016 14:26

Non Attendee

I love dancing and in my head I'm moving in time with the music - in reality I'm a bit behind and probably in the wrong direction!

Cerealchanger · 18/05/2016 14:45

I am seriously lacking in musical talent but I love to sing and play the piano. What I lack in talent I make up for in sheer gusto and enthusiasm

helcrai · 18/05/2016 20:58

Non-attendee- I like to think that I have the great talent of being the world's greatest chef. Rustling up all kinds of delights from the leftovers in my fridge. In reality, my DH confessed that he dreads the end of the month when my "culinary delights" are wheeled out!
DD1 can burp the alphabet- she even entered the school talent show with it! (Didn't win though).

clarabella12 · 18/05/2016 23:04

I love singing although know I'm awful.

Lauren1983 · 18/05/2016 23:09

Non Attendee

I like to think my talent is baking. I can make edible cakes but my decorating skills are very much lacking. I still having fun trying my best though.

GeorgeW78 · 18/05/2016 23:47

Non attendee.

My talent is playing the piano but I have short fingers that plod along the keys so although I enjoy it only people who love me would listen to me!

feeona123 · 19/05/2016 17:20

My dd has the amazing talent of stretching her tongue up to her nose and licking the bubbling bogies from her nose! Grin

hedera45 · 22/05/2016 19:00

Non-attendee. But I did see Maureen Lipman as FFJ in 'Glorious' in the West End a few years ago, which was very good.

The talent I assume I have in good measure is being funny - I usually get a good response from daughters and sons-in-law, but I often have to explain my bons mots to DH whose usual response is "Oh, it's one of your 'jokes'..."

mellicauli · 22/05/2016 23:07

My younger son (6) has a great talent for eating. Oysters, asparagus, mussels, langoustine..anything really posh. He also has a great talent for food criticism. He is very accurate in his analysis but it can be cruel beyond belief. (Nanna, you know what the worst part of this trifle is? the sponge..it's a bit like sawdust😢)

Looking forward to seeing this film..I am booked in for later in June. Has anyone who saw this also seen the French version? FR version was wonderful, so multi layered and thought provoking. And funny, of course.
