Ahead of the UK release of new film Florence Foster Jenkins on 6th May, around 35 Mumsnetters attended a special preview of the film with a guest. Read the comments below for their reviews.

NON ATTENDEES If you didn’t attend, in the true spirit of Florence, we would love to hear about the 'talents' you think you have but in reality you know you're not that good at but do anyway because you love them or even the 'talents' your DC have which only a parent would really love - add your comment below and you'll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice and a film poster signed by Meryl Streep.

Here’s the film’s synopsis:
“Starring Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant and Simon Helberg and directed by Stephen Frears (Philomena, The Queen), the hilarious and moving new comedy drama FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS is the inspirational true story of the legendary New York heiress and socialite who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great singer. The film celebrates the human spirit, the power of music and the passion of amateurs everywhere. The voice Florence (Streep) heard in her head was beautiful, but to everyone else it was hilariously awful. Her husband and manager, St Clair Bayfield (Grant), an aristocratic English actor, was determined to protect his beloved Florence from the truth. But when Florence decided to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944, St Clair knew he faced his greatest challenge.”

Like Florence I lOVE to sing, and also like Florence, I sound like a strangled cat if I try.....

Funkyferret · 04/05/2016 22:17

Non-attendee but I'm convinced I am a ninja of navigation. Yes, I can get you anywhere you want to go but OK, I admit it, it's not always by the most conventional route.

Bexwhit85 · 04/05/2016 22:34

I didn't attend, but i'm positive i'm a master at accents. My DH just give me a long look as he shakes his head, I just assumed its because i've amazed him.

roggy45 · 05/05/2016 11:29

Non attendee
I actually think I can sing but my kids are quick to point out my failings. In fact they go so far as to threaten to film me and out it on facebook if I do not shut up. : (

nettymay · 05/05/2016 15:26

Running a playgroup - the children loved me singing to them (but the mothers watching winced!)

leilajay · 05/05/2016 16:18

Non Tester my talent is playing basketball even if my older son thinks I am that good. But personally I think I am a pro. Use to play in College. Best sport ever and still enjoy it.

mo3733 · 05/05/2016 16:23

i think i am amazing at telling funny stories but in reality i embarrass my family at every party we attend.

strawberrisc · 05/05/2016 17:34

My daughter is driving me mad making pop videos on her phon. They last forever, all look the same and I have to watch each one to the end. I tell her they're great though!

jandoc · 05/05/2016 18:29

I think I'm great at cooking but it seems not!

Emrob86 · 06/05/2016 09:01

NON ATTENDEE

Wish I could be good at physical things like sport but my balance and coordination is rubbish! :P

phillie1 · 06/05/2016 10:10

Non tester. Love playing netball. Our team are in bottom division of 12, and some weeks get slaughtered but love the team spirit, and the feeling when we manage to win a game - just amazing. And keeps me fit

buckley1983 · 06/05/2016 21:20

Non-attendee here! Haven't seen Florence yet, but itching to do so! When I was younger, I really wanted to be good at hurdles - I was quite a short youngster, which didn't help, but I was determined! I managed to convince my PE teacher that I was so good, he should put me forward to represent the school in the County Athletics, which he duly did - ha! On the big day, I stretched like a pro - ready for my big win - the pistol went off & I ran as fast as my little legs would carry me - I managed to knock every hurdle over with my knee & came in last. I still remember almost crying when I crossed the finish line, I was so disappointed! Good to have that belief in myself though at such a young age, it didn't occur to me that I might not win! :)

sweir1 · 07/05/2016 00:12

I like to think i can dance but quite frankly im terrible

pmama · 08/05/2016 07:25

Non-attendee Maybe, with a bit more practice and classes, I could be a painter. I love colours, have concepts :)

jamielmdjs · 08/05/2016 11:17

non tester

my talent? comedy. i like to think i'm funny - i like to think i could do what the comics on the tv do but there's a big difference between making people laugh day to day and doing it consistently for a living.

i did dabble - a couple of open mic slots at the edinburgh festival and i did ok (didn't get booed off!) but doubt i could really sustain it.

wavingnow · 08/05/2016 13:37

Non tester here, though I have every intention of seeing the film mainly because of Meryl Streep and Simon Helberg. My 'talent' would have to be my singing and the choreography that goes with it! When the house is empty I love having a little time to put on my favourite song and let it all out, singing top volume, with my body doing the expressive rhythmic moves that exist so clearly only in my head!

BananaDaiquiri · 08/05/2016 18:25

Non Attendee

My talent would be singing as well. I think I'm Beyoncé. My colleagues think I'm an x factor "novelty" audition.

CormoranStrike · 08/05/2016 21:55

I saw this today and was really disappointed.

There was nothing in the film that the trailer didn't reveal, or nothing of major importance.

While FFJ was moderately charming and exceptionally needy the film didn't have much beyond that.

I would give it two out of five.

Tkw2014 · 08/05/2016 22:19

Well my talent is definately singing...I always win at singstar...but my husband doesn't think its a talent!

Brokenbiscuit · 08/05/2016 23:05

I saw the film yesterday, and I really enjoyed it. I didn't find it "hilarious", though it was funny in places, but it was poignant, moving and, in a strange way, quite inspiring.

The cast were fantastic - best performance I've ever seen from Hugh Grant. Streep and Helberg were also brilliant. All of the characters had their flaws, but they were very sympathetically portrayed.

As for my own talents, I guess I like to think I can dance but I doubt that anyone would agree. DH thinks he can speak French (he can't). And dd thinks that she can do a reasonable cartwheel...

badgermum · 09/05/2016 18:12

Non tester here: I like to think I'm a great singer especially when I'm on my own listening to the radio in the car I can belt out a great tune . . or so I think sometimes I'll forget that my DC are with me and they soon let me know that I'm not as good as I think. DS 2 seems to think he's Dynamo but in reality his magic tricks are pretty dire Wink

Pigeonpea · 09/05/2016 19:57

I can sing of course!!!!!!!!
My toddler covers her ears when I do sing
And I've known this for years ..............At the tender age of9, I auditioned for the school choir with Baa Baa Black Sheep and was told resolutely that I could not sing. I think I keep on singing to defy my old music teacher

BigGreenOlives · 10/05/2016 15:53

I think I'm good at singing and dancing but according to my daughters I'm just embarrassing. I don't care, I'll sing and dance anyway. Maybe my greatest strength is in fact not caring?

Sammyislost · 10/05/2016 20:40

I'm always singing, in that kind of way that I must imitate the same accent and be a soundalike, even opera singing, and even though I know I must sound like an absolute LOONEY to the neighbours!!!! Haha. It's so much fun though!!

Choccybadger · 11/05/2016 01:54

Non tester here - wish I'd been able to go.
I am a quite talented artist and have drawn several pet portraits and designed some prints which I would like to get made up. Hubby indulges me in the latter - wants to push me more to writing kids' books and illustrating them myself rather than go through expensive and often cutthroat fashion meetings re using prints.
I can sing. I think I'm really good, prepping for X factor, the voice or some such. Again, hubs thinks that may be a difficult one....
