A swivel bath seat for when they get super wriggly so your hands can be used for the shampoo and baby sponge. Make it fun, especially when trying to get little legs into the seat.

This is such a great idea - making bath time really fun for everyone. If your baby enjoys bathtime, it makes life so much easier. But if they are not enjoying it atm, bathe only when necessary and make it speedy - I'm sure they'll soon find it fun again - especially with a swivel seat!

I love giving a nightime bath - the lavender one is just lovely - and I hope that it does the trick with calming DD to a longer sleep.
I think that the most important thing about a bath is after the bath, drying in all of the creases, and using a good barrier cream before the nappy.
I don't personally use a skin lotion as i think that a good bath lotion will moisturise, plus it's easier to dress a dry baby minus any lotion.

I love the lavender bath, and enjoy one myself on occasion! It is so helpful, having a scent that associated with bedtime and sleep, especially when travelling or on holiday, helping everyone relax. And quite right too about drying all those little bends and creases - they can get sore if not dried properly. A good bath product will moisturise too, but try to find a lotion that absorbs quickly and without stickiness if baby skin does get a bit dry - it really will help. The Aveeno Baby Daily Care Moisturising Lotion is lovely.

Deffo an Emollient Wash - the aveeno one is just so good for skin, and a nappy cream which does not smother but gives a breathable barrier - helping eczema. A baby towel - we let him kick on his towel free from a nappy for 10-15 minutes before getting dressed for bed.

Have you tried the new Aveeno baby Daily Care Barrier Nappy Cream yet? All the lovely Aveeno oaty goodness in a barrier cream, soothing and protecting delicate skin. And naked towel time is such a good idea too!

i like to use coconut oil to massage him after his bath.. this helps to calm him before his nap and gives us some bonding time (when he isn’t trying to wriggle away from me/put everything in his mouth or just climb every surface!)

definitely think bath days give better sleep (ours are Sunday, Tuesday and Fridays) 😴

Massage is lovely for everyone isn't it? Really lovely way to help relax your baby and enhance bonding. And really interesting your baby sleeps better after bathtime - I think I'd be tempted to bathe him every night :)

DS used to scream when being undressed for a bath, but when I play music in the nursery and bathroom it really calms him - so play a bit of Ed Sheeran in your bathroom for a calmer baby - I second the barrier cream - only when fully dry including all of the creases.

Some babies just don't like bathtime, and some go through stages of liking and then hating bathtime! Great idea to use music to help distract him when getting ready for a bath.

The Aveeno Soothing Relief worked wonders for eczema - it was a lifesaver for us!

This is great to hear - thanks for your comment.

JacCharlton · 14/05/2024 08:00

My tips would be a bath seat to enable you to have more control over baby whilst in the bath, playing music to sooth, and a proven bath oil, and barrier cream to help protect and moisturise skin.

Great tips here too - bathtime should be enjoyable for everyone.

ketchuporbrownsauce · 14/05/2024 08:08

Using Aveeno was worth paying the extra for, as it really calmed my DS dry skin, so that would be my tip, give them eye contact and reassurance whilst bathing, let them kick and play as long as they can to enjoy the experience and ensure everything is dry and comfortable for dressing.

Getting ready for bathtime is such a good tip. Ensure everything is at hand, so you can concentrate on them and make bath playtime fun - and dry warm towels and clothes are really important too, babies can get cold v quickly.

itsywitsy · 14/05/2024 16:23

Make sure you have everything you need within reach, a warmed soft towel, washcloth, mild baby cleanser, cream or ointment, clean clothes and clean nappy - that way you can bath without distractions and fuss.

Absolutely agree with everything you say - think I just said it in an earlier comment, preparation is key to make everything safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Weleda calendula cream is brilliant, works absolute wonders.

So glad to hear you have found something that works so well for you and your baby.

A warmed hooded towel, and one on you knee. I always use Aveeno Baby Daily Care Gentle Bath & Wash - you don't need a lot because it is so good, and lasts for weeks, so worth the extra cost - plus it is so gentle and mild.

Using a mild and gentle cleanser in the bath can be particularly helpful if you live in a hard water area, as the dissolved minerals in hard water can be left on the skin, altering the pH, and potentially making the skin dry. Aveeno baby Daily Care and Soothing Relief bath products are pH balanced.

When my little ones were 2 and over - always swimming goggles in the bath - they hated shampoo in their eyes - even though it was baby shampoo - encourages splashing and playing

Love goggles in the bath.

I always use johnsons baby lotion for my baby, children, and use it as a cleanser and moisturiser. I think music in the bath is a must to help distract and calm a baby new to a bath.

Another vote for music at bathtime - I never thought of this and wish I had (my babies are very grown up now)!

If they have sensitive skin, stick to the products you can trust. I tried a new bubble bath and my poor son had problems with his skin for weeks after.

Really great point. If your baby has particularly sensitive skin (all baby skin has a tendency to be sensitive as it is thinner than adult skin), try patch testing before using a new product all over. Just put a small amount behind their ear, or inside the elbow and monitor the area for any redness or irritation for 24 hours, before using the product again.

I used to be sudo cream on my son’s eczema, but was then told by a nurse that it has no moisturising capacity at all. Do Aveeno have a product for this?

The Aveeno baby Dermexa range is specially formulated for babies with very dry skin, and for those who may be prone to eczema. There is a wash, cream and a balm in the Dermexa range, all with moisturising benefits. If you are changing your baby's skincare routine, do please check with the nurse beforehand.

My suggestions are keep to a routine, use the same words each time you bath, use a bath thermometer, use a hooded towel to keep baby warm after bath and make sure baby is dry - I let mine kick on a new dry towel and then dry the creases once more before adding a barrier cream and nappy for bed.

Routines are really helpful with babies - everyone knows what to expect! And towel time is lovely, especially before bed.

I had to comment on this thread! My daughter had a small patch of eczema on her chest when she was about five months old, the GP prescribed a cream and a lotion to put in the bath but they didn’t work.

She started nursery with an angry looking chest and the boss suggested I used Aveeno moisturiser first and last thing as it had worked for other babies there. Doubted it would do much but it did! I didn’t have another problem.

So I guess my advice would be that experienced child carers, mums, grandmas etc are great for advice.

So glad to hear that Aveeno worked so well for your daughter. And a cheer for advice from child carers, family members etc. Sometimes you can get lots of advice whether you want it or not, but experience can be really helpful!

At the very beginning just plain water is all you need. I found the Aveeno body wash great for my son’s eczema as he grew a bit older.

So pleased to hear Aveeno worked well for your son.

My GP recommended Aveeno Baby when DS had a bit of dry skin on his legs. The daily care lotion worked really quickly, and we’ve used it ever since.

Another vote for Aveeno - so glad to hear it worked so well.

Sudocrem after every nappy change - nappy rash is terrible and this will really help prevent it happening

Justalittlebitblondie · 02/06/2024 17:21

Consistency and routine- then they know what happens and will be happy about it

Asuwere · 02/06/2024 20:22

I'm probably repeating what others have said but I'd say plain water for young babies and they don't need bathed often. As they get a bit older and enjoy the bath, a bath seat is great so you have hands free and we'd sing lots of songs and play in the bath so it was nice, fun bonding time. I used aveeno baby wash and in fact my teen still uses it as likes the subtle smell!

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 03/06/2024 04:00

We've had loads of skin issues. My top tips:
Eczema - bathe less, use oats in a pair of tights to make a Milky bath. Use a little bit of emollient rather than just water.
Use no fabric conditioner but instead 2 tablespoons of white vinegar.

Nappy rash/ extreme dry skin/reactive allergic skin - use Bepanthen nappy cream. Azong stuff. I use it on my hands when react to washing up liquid.

ladyluck13 · 05/06/2024 18:11

My toddler loves bath time, we make it fun. We've always used Aveeno because she's got eczema, and obviously we had to work moisturising sessions into our routine. We pop music on n have a little dance n lotion party, she loves it cos its fun (but also practical for me)
