Balancing staying healthy with the demands of busy work and family life can be tough. With that in mind, Premier Global NASM - who offer training courses, supported by their unique 'live learning through digital technology' methodology, in fitness, personal training and nutrition - would like to hear your tips for nutrition and staying healthy.

Here’s what Premier Global NASM has to say: “Our Certified Nutrition Coach programme was created in response to the need for scientifically proven and validated nutrition information. Our aim is to empower as many people as possible with the right nutritional information suited to them – as opposed to following the latest celebrity diet trend.

Combining this need with a holistic approach that takes into consideration clients’ various fitness levels, backgrounds, religions, and other circumstances, ensures our Nutrition Certification, unlike others in the market, isn’t just a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

We spent years developing the most comprehensive Nutrition Certification available today, working with over 20 experts in the fields of nutrition, metabolism, physiology, psychology, behaviour sciences, and more to create and validate every aspect of the course.”

Do you make sure you have healthy snacks like fruit or nuts on your desk at work to prevent the call of the shared biscuits? What are your go-to ‘emergency snacks’ for when hunger or hanger strikes away from meal time? If you’ve experienced pregnancy cravings, how have you managed these while ensuring you get the nutrients you need?

Whatever your tips for nutrition and staying healthy below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list) as well as the Premier Global NASM Certified Nutrition Coach programme (worth £749).

Thanks and good luck!

I try to have lots of fruit to hand so I avoid unhealthy snacks.

Kweenxo · 31/03/2020 16:15

I eat low carb and so whenever I have fruits, I tend to have berries as they don't have as much sugar as other fruits. It's true when people say 'fruits are nature's candy'. Too much isn't good for the body so I limit it. My go to snacks are nuts, specifically pistachios and almonds.

I'd say the most important thing though is hydration. Sometimes when you feel as though you're hungry, you're really just thirsty, so it's important to drink water throughout the day.

GemmaTellerMorrow · 01/04/2020 13:32

Porridge for breakfast every morning, filling and healthy.
We try not to snack but always have fruit on hand.
I menu plan and my priority is the veg part, making sure we get our 5 a day.

Our motto is "Everything in moderation " as I think obsessing about what is deemed 'good' or 'bad' to eat can be hugely damaging to one's mental well-being.
If I want a piece of chocolate I'm not going to punish myself, I'll eat it and enjoy it, but I'm not scoffing down bars every day either.

TellMeItsNotTrue · 01/04/2020 14:45

I try not to snack, but if I do then it's usually on fruit. If I'm feeling hungry between meals then I think about whether its just boredom and I try having a drink before I will snack

munchbunch12 · 01/04/2020 19:19

We eat plenty of nuts and drink a lot of water, it seems to stop us snacking on other things. We've alsdo been getting the children involved with cooking more, they are especially keen on helping to make cakes Grin

PashleyB · 01/04/2020 21:09

We try and keep the fruit bowl stocked up so that it is easier to go to that rather than a sugary snack.

Arriaga · 02/04/2020 09:36

I went to a wellbeing talk with a nutritionist, and she recommended eating more veg, esp green and dark green veg so I tried to stick to that. She said to have some fruit but not too much (5 a-day should be veg heavy) and nuts are a good snack option so we always have nuts at home. I also try to cook oily fish regularly (salmon/mackeral/sardines). With the children, easy to get them to eat veg when blended in pasta sauces. Soups are also great and my kids love leek and potato soup/veg soup.

sb4278 · 02/04/2020 19:50

I tend not to snack. Prefer a class of water or a cup of tea.

savethecat · 03/04/2020 08:12

Agree 100% with @MrsFrTedCrilly

WarmCinnamonZoflora · 03/04/2020 14:55

Cook what you can from scratch and try to use as much fresh stuff as you can. Always more vegetables than meat. Enjoy food and savour it as you eat it.

lolly2010 · 05/04/2020 14:40

I make sure we have plenty of fruit in the house and a variety, I have taught our children the importance of eating fruit and veg by colour to get a good mix of vitamins. I encourage all of my family to stay hydrated to.

Sleepybumble · 08/04/2020 08:02

I fell hungry if I don't drink well throughout the day. I also find meal planning really helpful as then I k ow what's oming up next and it stops me snacking

ScorpionQueen · 08/04/2020 12:41

It can be difficult so I never worry if I have a less healthy day. Usually, I cook from scratch, lots of veg, lots of quality ingredients, a generally healthy diet. I also like the odd kebab and gin.

fuzzyduck1 · 08/04/2020 14:02

Many years ago when I was about9 me and a friend graffiti a bus stop with chalk. Got caught by the police who made us wash it off. I’m sure the police have better things to do like fining someone for littering.

PickledChicory · 08/04/2020 17:00

A few healthy swaps fruit and veg make good snacks, just need to be a bit more organised. Nuts and nut butters are great too tho best used sparingly.

dyscalculicgal96 · 08/04/2020 17:19

For me it is all about making informed choices.
My son loves to eat papaya for breakfast. Since he is prone to constipation and UTIs we actively avoid rice etc. My daughter loves to have pineapple, melon and strawberries as a snack. Both children love to eat blueberries and carrots at lunchtime too. I always eat breakfast each day and avoid drinking coffee at night. I typically do not buy crisps, or chocolate when I go food shopping either. I try to have two three glasses of water a day.
What about making lunch the night before? You can always involve the kids, turn it into a fun activity. See what you have got in your pantry or fridge. One way to be healthy is to try to eat lots of fruit. For lunch at home, you can quickly make up a garden salad in a bowl with what fruit you have on hand. Each day, set aside some time to munch on a piece of fruit.
What about eating melon and banana on toast in the morning? Or have strawberries with your porridge or kiwi or oranges with water or milk instead of a fattening cooked breakfast.

I walk everywhere and I honestly think it's the greatest way of taking exercise without it really feeling like exercise. I don't really watch what I eat, I eat everything but I keep an eye on portions.

alwaysataldi · 09/04/2020 09:54

Do you make sure you have healthy snacks like fruit or nuts on your desk at work to prevent the call of the shared biscuits?

As an office we have a fruit bowl at the end of the bank of desks, with bananas, apples, and oranges. - we made a pact not to bring biscuits (with the exception of birthdays when we bake and bring in our goodies)

I am now WFH and the same apples to my work area - I think it's because I am used to grabbing an apple or peeling a banana.

What are your go-to ‘emergency snacks’ for when hunger or hanger strikes away from meal time?

A hard boiled egg, or a bag of nuts

If you’ve experienced pregnancy cravings, how have you managed these while ensuring you get the nutrients you need?

My craving was grapefruit and wheatabix - so weird but healthy. (I heard that citrus cravings mean you have a boy - which I did)

Cornishmumofone · 09/04/2020 12:10

I plan everything so that I don't waste food and also so that I don't spend time in the kitchen nibbling whilst pondering what meals to make!

Isitandwatchastearsgoby · 10/04/2020 12:46

Do not jump on any bandwagon! A mix of food rules, trying to build a healthy relationship with food and getting outside (garden or open window) as much as possible.

foxessocks · 10/04/2020 18:41

I don't buy snacks, we don't really have snacks we have three meals a day and maybe fruit in between. I do eat treats and things but just not hugely into snacking. Since everything I would snack on would be unhealthy!

sharond101 · 10/04/2020 19:28

Preparation is key. Never give in to buying lunch or snacks out and try to eat bigger meals and not snack at all. Drink plenty of water and keep active.

Quietvoiceplease · 11/04/2020 07:11

OK my advice is not new but is what I try and do to keep healthy.

  • I eat meals, sat down, as far as possible from a plate (or at my desk). I allow myself a full range of foods, and may have dessert, but try to keep portion sizes appropriate, and carbs only a small part of each meal
  • I allow only snacks of fruit and vegetables between meals
  • I allow myself to feel hungry occasionally, and remind myself that constant snacking is not necessary or normal
  • (I drink loads of tea and coffee though because I simply cannot imagine life without it).
It's not rocket science. It's what everyone probably knows is the right thing to do. In the current lockdown, with exercise much harder to find time for, it has become really important.
ButterflyOfFreedom · 11/04/2020 17:48

Snacks for work are fruit, vegetables & sometimes nuts/ crackers/ breadsticks.
Other people in the office sometimes offer sweet treats & chocolate etc but I resist.
I find I'm generally healthy during the day but can indulge in unhealthy snacks in the evening.
The best way to avoid this is to just not buy them in the first place!
And sometimes when I think I'm hungry I have a drink instead (often tea) which stops me from eating!

goldenretriever1978 · 11/04/2020 19:17

1 I always try to have fruit or nuts as a healthy snack at work.

2 A banana is always a great healthy snack for me.

3 Pregnancy cravings weren't an issue as nausea was! I liked frozen stuff like ice pops, so this wasn't much of an issue.
