This activity is now closed

Everyone needs a little boost now and then. We all have those frantically busy days - whether at work, at home taking care of the kids or just rushing around trying to keep all those proverbial plates spinning – and it’s easy to forget how to keep yourself well nourished and energised. Not only can making better nutritional choices help keep you energised, but also little emotional boosts such as listening to your favourite song can also have a huge effect on how we handle life’s demands and whatever the day throws at us! With that in mind Nairn’s would really like to know what gives you an energy boost?

Here’s what Nairn’s have to say: “Nairn’s are all about ‘grabbing life by the oats’ and over the next few weeks we’ll be bringing you some exclusive, energising tips - we’d like to think it’s a pretty good fit considering just how naturally energising oats can be for you. You’ll find interviews with our inspiring and energetic ambassadors, expert advice from our resident nutritional therapist and loads more over on our website.

So, if you’ve got a go-to snack or energising habit that you swear by to keep you up and running, why not share it with the community? You could be lucky enough to win a hamper of incredible goodies from Nairn’s and friends, worth £150!”

What part of the day are you most likely to feel the need for an energy boost? What are the danger signs that your child’s energy is flagging? What foods or snacks do you give them to stop them getting ‘hangry’?! Do you get an energy boost from having a bit of family time? Maybe you get a boost from listening to your favourite playlist on your way to work? Would you say that exercise is what helps give you a boost? And if so what snacks do you eat to make sure you keep your energy going after exercise? What are your favourite breakfasts and lunches that help keep you going for the day? And what foods do you avoid that make you ‘crash’? How do you incorporate oats into your diet?

Whatever gives you an energy boost, share them on the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a Nairn’s hamper worth £150 and one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Drinking water gives me a boost. Apple slices on peanut butter plus oatcakes.

Music also helps.

VeniVidiViciTwice · 11/05/2019 17:35

I find silence and stillness gives me energy (I become easily overwhelmed with noise and movement so just five minutes out a couple of times a day stops me becoming mentally fatigued), I have also just started c25k which is giving me a boost once I have finished a run (definitely not during the runs! 😂)

Flapdoodles · 11/05/2019 17:35

My energy starts to flag just after lunch so early afternoon ish. I drink lots of water to give me a boost and if I am not at work, I like to get some fresh air with a walk. Both my DC get grumpy when their energy is flagging, I always encourage them to get a drink and have either some fruit or a cereal bar to eat. I often find Sunday morning is a bit of a drag for all 4 of us, so we tend to take our dog out for a walk in the woods and that seems to give us all an energy boost to get on and do something with the rest of the day. I think exercise does give me/us a boost but it is tricky to drag everyone out into the cold/wet with "you will feel better when we have had a walk ...."

I eat oats frequently - either hot oats with some fruit for breakfast or I often make overnight oats (oats, yoghurt, fruit - layered), DC don't like hot oats but do like cereal bars that contain oats.

My mid afternoon snack is the finely milled oatcakes, Lidl's organic peanut butter spread on with banana on top! It is so tasty and gives you a much better boost than chocolate, which I used to crave at that time of day!

TarquinGyrfalcon · 11/05/2019 18:05

I keep a packet of Nairn’s ginger biscuits in my office for when I need something sweet.

SouthWestmom · 11/05/2019 19:19

Too funny all the references to oats.
My go to pick me up is a glass of Prosecco hiding in the bedroom with some form of Talk Radio. Usually at 7.30pm before i have to start bedtime and I've stuck the kids on the Playstation.

What gives me energy is getting up and doing something, going for a walk, doing some housework, gardening, anything like that. Once I get moving I feel energetic.

Bollockingfuck · 11/05/2019 20:21

Mmmmm - we love some Nairn’s oatcakes! Individual packs are good for after school snacks for the kids - they like cheese or chocolate chip biscuits;much less sugar than other snacks). I like the original or cheese ones with hummus for lunch.
I definitely always feel fuller if I have oatcakes instead of regular water biscuits / crackers. They do stop me flagging as much around 3 - although if I do it’s coffee that will get me through until bedtime!

Aquifolium · 11/05/2019 20:25

Some great suggestions on here. Lots on non food ideas; fresh air, exercise, sunshine, loud music, water.

On the food front I usually go for nuts. Pistachio is what me and my 3yo like best.

Starlight2004 · 11/05/2019 20:39

I always feel full of energy after an early morning workout. Lots of people think getting up at 6am to workout is crazy but it really does give me a boost. If I need a energy boost mid afternoon then sliced apple and peanut butter is my favourite snack.

Cotswoldmama · 11/05/2019 21:19

I usually need an energy boost at about 4pm it's that time of day where it's too early to cook dinner and too late to take my boys out anywhere. I find s kitchen disco before preparing dinner is a good way to shorten the wait until dinner time and when daddy comes home. And it can lighten the mood and drag my boys away from electronics or tv!

oreodough · 11/05/2019 21:57

I always have a lull around 11am and find myself needing an energy boost. If I'm at work, I get up and stretch my legs and have a coffee with a couple of pieces of dark chocolate. If I'm at home, I find a small nap does the trick to feeling energised

PickAChew · 11/05/2019 22:27

If I've had a bad night (not rare) I often find myself flagging at about 3pm. Sometimes I just need to take some painkillers and sit down with a soothing drink, but sometimes I do feel like I'm not going to make it to dinner time, without feeling a bit wobbly, so I have a handful of nuts. Some days, nice, healthy, unprocessed nuts, but others, only salted peanuts will do!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/05/2019 22:42

Is it ok just to say that I love nairn's oatcakes, especially the cheese ones?

pearldeodorant · 11/05/2019 22:45

Love porridge with golden sultanas for breakfast but I have to say when I'm really flagging in the afternoon it's a sneaky creme egg that keeps me going, I'm still going on the family Easter stash Blush

Jemima232 · 11/05/2019 22:55

The fine-milled oatcakes with humous, olives and vine-ripened tomatoes does it for me. That's my go-to late evening snack.

Definitely oats for breakfast, too. I left mine cooking for ages accidentally today while answering a phone call and although the pan took a lot of cleaning the porridge was wonderful.

Mummymummums · 11/05/2019 23:34

For me getting out for a walk. Even my DD12 agrees she feels better after a walk. Food wise for DC a banana on wholemeal sandwich. I try to eat low GI so a handful of cashews for me. Either that or a great big bar of chocolate but I always regret the latter Grin

defineme · 12/05/2019 00:06

I love oatcakes with cream cheese and a dab of jam for a yummy afternoon pick me up. Music is my absolute energised.. it's gets me out of bed, drives me to work, powers the housework and creates happy times with my kids.

dancemom · 12/05/2019 07:30

I have my oats at lunchtime, oats, yogurt and berries. Keeps me going through the afternoon and a post work gym session before getting home for dinner.

JellySlice · 12/05/2019 08:16

I get an energy boost from singing in a community choir. By the end of the day I am usually too tired to think, but I drag myself off to choir nonetheless. Two hours later I walk home with a spring in my step, refreshed.

froggers1 · 12/05/2019 08:55

My whole family don't cope well with wheat so we all eat Nairns Cheese Oat cakes for lunch. My son has had a little packet in his lunch everyday since he was 2 and he's now 10! They are such an energy boost.

Aside from food, a walk in the woods really uplift me!

ifigoup · 12/05/2019 09:03

I love how many people on this thread are saying their boost food is oats, as though that will make the oatcake company more likely to pick their comment as a winner! I’m pretty sure the winning posts on these kinds of threads are just chosen randomly.

Anyway, it’s something high-protein for me: a hard-boiled egg, some cheese, Greek yoghurt, or a Peperami.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 12/05/2019 09:38

I don't generally eat until I get home from work at 2pm. I rise very early and find that breakfast makes me sluggish. If I have a lot of housework to do in the afternoon, my preferred energy lunch is oatcakes with onion chutney and slices of strong cheddar, followed by an apple. I also drink a lot of water.

Osquito · 12/05/2019 09:39

The morning walk to school (25’ with child, 10’ back alone) really wakes me up - I find by the time I return I’ve got a list of tasks in my head I’m ready to tackle.

I don’t notice if any foods particularly energise me (though I’m aware of the technical health effects) but gosh I love oatcakes. The stem ginger or plain ones are always in our snack drawer!
