NOW CLOSED

Whether you go often or it’s a rare treat, trips to the cinema often leave memories in a way watching a film at home rarely would. ODEON would like to hear about your memories of going to the cinema - either when you were a child or when taking your own children now.

Chris Bates, Commercial Director at ODEON UK & Ireland said: “The festive period is a special and magical time for the whole family, and what better way to celebrate than by enjoying one of the most highly anticipated films of the year – Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns. Across our cinemas, we’ve been busy sprinkling a little bit of extra magic on the cinema-going experience – including live performances from magicians, decorating our foyers, and a special Magic Mix deal on food & drink. Tickets to see the return of everyone’s favourite nanny are available to book now and we can’t wait to welcome guests through our doors to watch this truly magical film with ODEON."

Do you remember a particular film? Perhaps you have memories of a family member laughing so loudly it was embarrassing? Maybe you remember going without your parents for the first time? What are your favourite memories of taking your own children to the cinema?

All who post their memories below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I was quite old the first time I was taken to the cinema; it was to see the little mermaid. I can still remember how beautiful I thought the film was.

These days I'm not that bothered about films (although married to a complete cinephile) until it gets to Christmas. To me, watching Christmas movies together is part of the whole build up to Christmas.

The memory of watching a film at the cinema was when my best friends mum worked at the cinema. On a Saturday we used to watch at least a couple of films and we were silly and giggling. I think one of the first ones we watched was carebears and we were very excited.
Going to the cinema was one of the best things we did as kids. My son and daughter love going to to the cinema. We tend to go to relaxed showings for my son because he is autistic. We all enjoy a good film and we are off to see Mary poppins in a few days.

The first film I remember was Jaws, we went as a family as a Boxing Day treat. I am still terrified of swimming deep in the sea in case there is a shark! Grin My favourite cinema memory as a child was when I went to see Grease, I was allowed to go with my older sister and I just remember everyone getting up and singing and dancing along. It was a fantastic atmosphere and I wanted to be a Pink Lady for a long time afterwards.

I also remember there used to be 2 movies, a short film at the beginning with an intermission when a member of staff would sell ice cream.

As a family we still loving going to the cinema but it is less often than we would like as it is quite expensive.

Remember my mum taking us to the tiny cinema in Inverness, we almost missed the bus. We were going to see the new little women film for my birthday I think. Always remember the pearl and dean music and the smell of popcorn 🍿 fab memories

My earliest cinema memory is going to see one of the Star Wars films with my Mum at the Coronet in Notting Hill Gate. I remember going and being ever so excited then I fell asleep and slept through it!

I remember going to see The Meg with my partner and dear son..we had stocked up on sweets drinks and a large popcorn which I placed on my lap, during the film there is a clip which made me jump out of my seat and practically all of our popcorn landed in a large lovely pink fur hood of the lady in front of me.I warned dearest family to keep quiet and we continued to watch the film...soon as the credits came up we all escaped before she realised 😄apologies pink hooded lady!!

Going to see ET. I was supposed to go and see it with school but wasn't allowed when another pupil got me into trouble for something I hadn't done. Fortunately my lovely DM believed me and made a point of taking me before the school trip! She's coming with me and DD to watch Mary Poppins Returns.

BollockyBagels · 27/12/2018 20:56

One of my first trips to the cinema as a young child in the early 1970's, with my DM and slightly older brother, was to see a spin-off from The Magic Roundabout called Dougal and the Blue Cat. Although it was aimed at children, it had psychedelic undertones which I found too frightening and we had to leave early! Blush
This year has been great for cinema visits - Dunkirk and Bohemian Rhapsody were particularly enjoyable. And both made me cry!

compstruck · 27/12/2018 21:15

The very first film my mother took me to see was Bambi. And of course there's the scene where her mother is shot... :( I took my son to see Ninja Turtles and other fun kids films when younger. Great experience for him. Except the kids tended to then use the sofas and beds to replicate the turtles moves! oh well, all part of growing up I guess!

We used to go to the ABC Minors as children on Saturday mornings at out local cinema. It was called the Toledo, and is now flats.

I also rememeber the Children's Film Foundations films that used to be on before the main feature , which were actually quite good, and that sometimes there was also an interval in the main film.

BlackHillsofDakota · 27/12/2018 21:20

I remember my grandma taking me to see Care Bears and falling asleep half way through. She then snored really loudly through most of it. Unfortunately the cinema is now a wetherspoons pub!

Sostenueto · 27/12/2018 22:34

Midnight horror matinees in the 1970s. Great!

VKaur78 · 27/12/2018 22:40

I have been taking my kids to see kids movies from very early on. My son, 10 years old, had always enjoyed watching movies. He totally gets engrossed in movies and watchs them like a proper film critic. But my 9 year old daughter is so funny since she has turned 3 she has been going to watch movies at cinema but she still needs an ongoing supply of food to keep her going. once her food ends she would try and start a conversation with you . We are working on it. one day she will enjoy a movie without talking. :-)

papaver · 27/12/2018 23:09

Birthday treat to see the Jungle Book - fabulous film - over 40 years later still one of my favorite films and still love going to the cinema

TwitterQueen1 · 27/12/2018 23:28

Mary Poppins was the first film I ever saw and we saw it in 1964 or early 1965 so I would have been 5 at the time.

My father made my sister and I learn how to say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious in the car on the way to the cinema because he said they wouldn't let us in if we couldn't say it! It was the password!

Sostenueto · 27/12/2018 23:43

Double bills. I remember going with my 2 besties to see Thomas Crown Affair and The Graduate. We dolled ourselves up to look older and swooned all night over our 2 cinema heartthrobs! No double bills nowadays ( sigh)

LolaHola · 28/12/2018 00:54

The original Mary Poppins film was the first movie I went to see in the cinema. I was on holiday in the Isle of Man in 1971. I loved it!!

JulesJules · 28/12/2018 08:39

We used to go to 'Saturday Morning at the Pictures' every Saturday when we were little - We would have a curlywurly, and sit and watch a programme of cartoons, a serial episode (like Robinson Crusoe) and some singalong music. Mum or Dad would pick us up afterwards, so it gave them a Saturday morning off.
Going to the pictures as a child, they always had a break in the film in the middle.
I remember being absolutely terrified of the Childcatcher in the ChittyChitty BangBang film and having to sleep with my light on.

quizqueen · 28/12/2018 08:42

I remember going to see my first x rated film 'Here we go round the mulberry bush' when I was 16 and terrified I would get caught as I was underage. I took my glasses off as I thought it would make me look older and couldn't see where I was going properly. That film is so tame by today's standards!!

IrmaFayLear · 28/12/2018 09:58

We never went to the cinema when I was young as it was one of the many places which, according to my mum, had polio . (And this was several decades after polio vaccine!)

So I was very excited to go on a trip to local flea pit Embassy with friend and her mum to see the Aristocats. I remember a really long queue snaking round the block, the dust rising from the burgundy seats, having an ice cream tub with a wooden spoon and - most of all - the supporting feature which was a very weird Scottish short film called The Duna Bull.

cathisherwood · 28/12/2018 13:31

Took my daughter to see Beauty and the Beast as her first cinema outing. She loved it - and still does

DwangelaForever · 28/12/2018 16:25

I remember I went to the Odeon and a big wooden bit of the Ben and Jerrys counter fell on my foot and I fainted. I got free cinema tickets ice cream drinks and pop corn so I wouldn't sue them, but looking back I wish I hadve cause that was a health and safety nightmare!!

MrsMaker88 · 28/12/2018 19:45

Best memory was mum and baby cinema watching Malificent with my very well behaved first born

Anj123 · 28/12/2018 20:38

I remember going to see “A Fish Called Wanda” many years ago at the cinema and fainting halfway through the film because I wasn’t feeling well and it was quite warm! I had to be carried out. Luckily I was OK afterwards and the cinema kindly gave me free tickets so I could go back and see the whole film 😀

powkin · 28/12/2018 21:13

Sister Act is the first film I really remember seeing at the cinema, but it was Cool Runnings that has really special memories, as my dad came to the cinema with us. The Odeon in my hometown was absolutely packed! I wish there were more of those fun family films made today.
