NOW CLOSED

Whether you go often or it’s a rare treat, trips to the cinema often leave memories in a way watching a film at home rarely would. ODEON would like to hear about your memories of going to the cinema - either when you were a child or when taking your own children now.

Chris Bates, Commercial Director at ODEON UK & Ireland said: “The festive period is a special and magical time for the whole family, and what better way to celebrate than by enjoying one of the most highly anticipated films of the year – Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns. Across our cinemas, we’ve been busy sprinkling a little bit of extra magic on the cinema-going experience – including live performances from magicians, decorating our foyers, and a special Magic Mix deal on food & drink. Tickets to see the return of everyone’s favourite nanny are available to book now and we can’t wait to welcome guests through our doors to watch this truly magical film with ODEON."

Do you remember a particular film? Perhaps you have memories of a family member laughing so loudly it was embarrassing? Maybe you remember going without your parents for the first time? What are your favourite memories of taking your own children to the cinema?

All who post their memories below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My favourite memory of going to the cinema is going to see Freaky Friday with my mum in Odeon Swansea (which back then was UCI Cinema!). We both had hot dogs and enjoyed the film!

star wars - the original of course!

I remember going to see “Return to Oz” for my friend’s birthday and having to take turns to sit next to her mum as we were all so scared of the monkeys on wheels. I think they were called “The Wheelers” or maybe we called them that???

The first film I saw was Raggedy Ann at age 5, and had nightmares for weeks about the gloopy beast. I looked it up on u tube recently and it still freaks me out.

Taking dd to see Piglets Big Movie, her first cinema trip resulted in dd becoming obsessed with Piglet for a while. It was very sweet :)

I remember my first ever trip to the cinema with my dad to watch 101 Dalmations. He said I talked all the way through and he would never take me again :D haha I was so excited I couldn't stop talking. I always remember that excitement and love to take my children now and watch their faces in awe of the big screen.

I went to see the Hunger Games when I was a student and I needed some rest and relaxation from all that work 😂 I went to a showing as about 9.30am and I was the only person there. So basically a private viewing! I even sat in the posh seats, even though I kept thinking I was going to get told off.

I remember seeing the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels in the cinema and making my friends sit through the hour of credits to see the last tiny scene, even though we were all bursting for the loo. I loved those films, there's nothing like Keira Knightley in epic pirate battles on the big screen!

The first film I ever saw at the cinema was Mulan and I remember being in awe of the whole experience. It was particularly memorable as I had a large bag of skittles which I opened and sent the entire bag flying across the cinema.

My children and I regularly go to the cinema but I remember when I was a child, a trip to the "pictures" was a real family treat.

Movies were not readily available on TV or the internet so cinemas were packed, with big queues outside. I recall that there were breaks during the movies when short animations would be shown and a lady would sell those rectangle shaped ice-creams. I can still hear the Pearl and Dean jingle!

I vividly remember queuing up for the re-release of Snow White with my Nan, brother and cousins. This must have been around 1987 as I recall the posters outside were advertising The Lost Boys. When we arrived at the cinema the queue went right around the corner and when we got near to the front doors, we were told that the screening was full so we would have to wait for the next showing - which we did without complaint!

I cannot imagine my own children waiting in a queue for that long!!

My mum used to come with me to the cinema when I was a child - we saw Bond films & Disney films mainly. 'Bambi' scared me when I was little as did 'Pinocchio'! I've loved taking my children to the kids' films at my local cinema on weekday mornings since they were little and still go with them in their teens. Brilliant initiative to offer films at pocket money prices and be able to go as a family.

I adored the cinema when I was a child and it’s just not the same now and hasn’t been for a long time. Our local was a little old Odeon with old star shaped lights in the ceiling, red velvet theatre chairs and swishy curtains. It felt so glamorous going there and that feeling has entirely been lost now.

My sister is 8 yrs older than me and I remember her and some of her friend taking me to see The Little Mermaid. They all made a massive fuss of me and I felt so grown up!

It was so exciting going out without my parents and being let loose on the pick n mix. I still love that movie

GetKnitted · 25/03/2019 22:30

I just realised i already posted one, but my other favourite was going to the cinema with a bunch of friends and realising that two of us had accidentally sat in the kissing seats!

My Aunt treating my sister and I to see George In the Jungle!! It was a trip to see family anyway and then with an extra treat to go to the cinema was even better. Have now introduced the dvd to my daughter who loves the film. Dont worry we had the video for years.
