Instagram is now a huge part of our culture and is a staple for many teens (and adults alike!) whether they use it to share moments with their friends, run an account for your family pet, or simply to browse memes. We would like to find out how your teens use Instagram and what accounts you’d recommend for teenagers to follow?

Do your teenagers follow foodie, beauty, or music accounts for inspiration? Are they creative and use Instagram to share their own art or photography? Perhaps they are keen activists and use the platform to spread awareness and gain support for good causes?

Instagram have also pulled together this handy guide which explains all about the safety features you and your teens can use to make sure they are getting the best experience on Instagram.

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks

My daughter uses it to post selfies and chat to her friends

RACHELSMITH45 · 30/12/2018 22:37

My daughter posts photos of food mostly!🤣Also photos with friends and holiday pictures. It does worry me though and I make sure I see what's being posted first!

WelliesAndPyjamas · 30/12/2018 22:51

My teenager has the app but doesn’t use it. Says that no one —cool— uses it any more. I use it, as do my friends, so he is probably right!

Mrs9C · 30/12/2018 23:07

To be honest, it's never used how we think it should be used. It's all selfies, likes, and popularity...we like to think they'll use it for creativeness and to develop a love of photography, sadly it just isn't like that for them Sad

grannybiker · 30/12/2018 23:21

She mainly uses it to post pictures of herself and friends as far as I can make out. There's a messaging facility too.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to admit I don't really 'get' Instagram, but I guess I'm just an old fogey who doesn't give a rat's arse what people's impressions of what I look like are!

baconbap · 31/12/2018 00:25

they're not that interested in instagram

pinkspideruk · 31/12/2018 00:29

my nephew uses it for posting selfies showing his muscles/gym poses, screen shots of the different video games hes playing and he follows lots of celebrities, gamers and gym/fitness accounts

MiserableMe1 · 31/12/2018 13:03

my daughter use's it to share her selfies, i absolutely hate here doing it but she is 17 now, and thinks i have no clue, but i just worries about all the followers she has & what they might be saying to her, i tell her to be very careful ho she talks too, but with her being very pretty, it will get her unwanted attention, soical media is getting out of control, for the young now, i think

angela121262 · 31/12/2018 13:39

They are more interested in Facebook

Jade5093 · 31/12/2018 14:00

My step daughter avoids it and I don't blame her

cathryn1 · 31/12/2018 15:14

selfies of themselves and food ?

angelamw25 · 31/12/2018 15:38

My eldest is only just old enough to join social media sites but so far has showed no interest in doing so. Hoping it stays that way for a while!

Blondie1982 · 31/12/2018 19:44

Ours only follows friends on it

CopperPan · 31/12/2018 20:06

My dd takes dance classes so she shares photos of rehearsals and performances, it's part of her social network. DS1 is quite arty and uploads photos and creative stuff. It's nice for them to be able to share their interests but I also follow them and check that the content is appropriate.

Gigglegoat · 31/12/2018 20:09

Mostly selfies.. Make up and hairdos and trying on clothes.. Places they go to with friends.

Devilishpyjamas · 01/01/2019 09:15

My 17 year old uses it for banter. Has tended to post on others more than his own, but when he posts something a lot of (good natured) banter seems to follow.

My youngest (14) uses it mainly to look at football related stuff, but he is football obsessed. Occasionally posts photos of the dog.

Lulabellx1 · 02/01/2019 12:05

My DS uses Instagram to communicate with his friends. They have private groups on Insta (I know the lingo), as well as WhatsApp.

They mainly take selfies! I check his posts regularly and we have a ‘no electronics in the bedroom past 9pm’ rule, so he has to leave his phone downstairs and charging overnight… otherwise it’s pinging all night and no-one gets any sleep, including him!

kids under 10 so stay well away from social media!

Chocolate50 · 11/04/2019 21:31

My DD uploads her artwork onto her instagram count regularly. Looks good

Snog · 13/04/2019 08:29

My dd has a personal account which I can't see!
Also a public account and an art account.
She posts some of her own art and uses other people's posts as inspiration for her art too.

Instagram is her favourite social media channel. FB she tells me is now just for old people.

GetKnitted · 15/04/2019 22:27

sharing selfies and viral videos

FreshAprilStart · 21/04/2019 13:05

Linking to famous people she wants to follow. Like lifestyle advice

Eisley · 25/04/2019 22:56

Always talk to your kids a out it openly. Share stories with them about things that have happened and discuss hypothetical situations with them.

Pimmsypimms · 09/05/2019 23:29

My 14 year old dd uses Instagram to follow friends, make up influencers and bands. She has added me so I get to see what she posts, to make sure it's not inappropriate (I've only had to pull her up on this once) I never comment on her posts though, I imagine that would be embarrassing for her if I did! She doesn't post much and mainly uses it for private messaging her friends.
