Vote for a UK animal welfare charity - they could win a £100,000 donation from Animal Friends

We at MNHQ are doing some work with Animal Friends Pet Insurance to find a worthy animal welfare charity to receive a donation of £100,000.

Mumsnet users are going to decide the final winner from a shortlist of three, but before we do that we want Mumsnet users to pick a charity to make it through to the final round.

The three charity choices to choose from are:
Celia Hammond Trust
British Hen Welfare Trust
The Horse Trust

Here is some info from Animal Friends about who they are and what they do: “To celebrate twenty successful years of providing affordable pet insurance as well as donating millions of pounds to animal welfare charities around the world, Animal Friends Pet Insurance have decided to give away a whopping £100,000k to one deserving animal charity in the UK just in time for Christmas.

Animal Friends was founded in 1998 to donate money to animal charities. By working with charities and supporting worthy projects worldwide, Animal Friends helps to improve the lives of animals, combat animal abuse and cruelty, assist in the protection of rare and endangered species, help conserve unique and vital habitats and assist local communities to protect and value their wildlife heritage.”

So please click here to vote for the charity you’d like to see appearing on the final shortlist.

Everyone who votes will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £50 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I'd vote for £30k each for the three charities named in the OP and £10k to be donated to a small local charity, picked by lottery from a list nominated by Mumsnetters, for which I'd nominate Leeds Cat Rescue.

£10k to a very small charity would probably mean more than £100k to a big one with a national profile and big marketing budget.

BehemothPullsThePeasantsPlough · 06/10/2018 09:59

I think this is the first round of a knockout competition: so it wouldn’t be 30 grand each if they split it, it would be 10 perhaps.

thecatneuterer · 06/10/2018 10:20

I have asked MNHQ for clarification on how this works. And yes this is only the first round. I don't quite understand how it works, but this vote certainly isn't 'it'.

@BarbaraofSeville You are absolutely right - but none of those three charities fall into that category. CHAT has no marketing budget whatsoever and, because it operates on such a shoestring, needs to agonise over the smallest of purchases - even printer paper. It may be reasonably well known, but that's because it achieves a lot and certainly not because it has a lot of money. Even £5000 would mean a huge amount and would directly save a lot more lives.

SuburbanRhonda · 06/10/2018 11:14

We all love CHAT on here, thecatneuterer, and we love the work you do.

It’s just hard when it feels like you’re rejecting the other charities in choosing CHAT.

Paperdolly · 06/10/2018 12:09

Any...as long as it doesn't go to the RSPCA I'm not fussed. I think the RSPCA is not the charitable style it was set up for.

fenneltea · 06/10/2018 16:36

My vote has been given to Celia Hammond, I volunteer for a local rescue and have rescued several cats of my own. The suffering they go through is unrelenting, and so much can be achieved with a relatively small budget.
Thecatneuterer has also given valuable advive on this forum and been a great advocate for cat welfare, it would be nice to recognise that.

That doesn't mean that the other causes are somehow less deserving, but horses are incredibly expensive to care for and often bred indiscriminately and the money would cover so much less for equine care relative to what could be achieved with a smaller animal.

whoatealltheharibo · 06/10/2018 17:02

BHWT has got my vote as it’s local to me

pinkmagic1 · 06/10/2018 17:27

Voted for The Horse Trust. It is a shame that the money can't be split though as they are all deserving causes.

billybear · 06/10/2018 17:48

CELIA HAMMOND gets my vote

DecafLatte · 06/10/2018 19:29

All of them are highly deserving .
But if I really have to chose it’s going to be Celia Hammond.

percheron67 · 06/10/2018 22:59

My vote is for The Horse Trust. I, also, wish that the money could go three ways.

ShannonRockallMalin · 07/10/2018 03:06

I am owned by both hens and cats, so difficult decision, but have gone for Hen Welfare. I don’t think many people realise what characterful, interesting animals chickens are, and they make great pets even in a small garden.

Polkasq · 07/10/2018 10:16

The Horse Trust gets my vote.

TellMeItsNotTrue · 07/10/2018 11:39

Done, wish it could be split but I'm sure that whichever it goes to will make good use of it

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 07/10/2018 12:43

Another vote for The Horse Trust. Please share the money with all three charities, why help just one ?

DoryNow · 07/10/2018 17:15

Celia Hammond please!

Byrdie · 07/10/2018 21:33

What a choice! The horse trust for me. Still not really clear how this voting works... how many charities go into the next round? How many rounds are there? Anyhow, surely voting for all at once and splitting the money according to votes would be nicer - any money means so much to charities that often operate on tiny amounts.

HelenaDove · 08/10/2018 02:47

It would be great if they could all get something.

Voted for Celia Hammond.

t00dle00 · 08/10/2018 08:24

@MNHQ

Do you know that this company is known for never paying out?

The company did it to me and left me and my husband in thousands of pounds worth of debt.

There is a Facebook page about them where thousands of disgruntled customers who have been left in debt and are sharing their story.

I just thought you should know what kind company you're working with.

EllieMumsnet · 08/10/2018 16:48

Hi Everyone!

Thank you all for voting over the weekend...we have had over 3,500 votes which is amazing Smile.

With a staggering 96% of the votes the Celia Hammond Trust is the winner of this round and will be entered into the final 3 charities, to be in the hopes of winning the £100,000 donation from Animal Friends.

Also Animal Friends would like to address some of your queries as to why the money cannot be split across the 3 finalists, here's what they would like to say:

"Animal Friends has supported all 3 charities previously and no doubt will do so again in the future. However, this large donation is intended to make a hugely significant difference to one charity with the help of the public but rest assured, the others have previously received donations from us too. We carry out a significant programme of donations all year round"

Finally, just to clarify any confusion of how this is going to work: the Celia Hammond Trust will now be put through to the final stage along with 2 other charities. In a few weeks there will be another thread where you can vote again for the winner of the £100,000 donation.

Thanks
MNHQ

That's great news!

@MNHQ - I'm still unclear on how this works. How will the other two finalists be chosen? Are you going to do another vote between three charities twice more and then another vote in the final? Or are Animal Friends/MN choosing the other two finalists direct, which will be joined by CHAT in the final?

EllieMumsnet · 09/10/2018 11:50

Hi @thecatneuterer

Sorry for the confusion here. One of the other charities has been chosen by a media partner of Animal Friends and the other has been chosen by Animal Friend's customers and then the Celia Hammond Trust by Mumsnet users.

In a few weeks time, there will be another thread, where users will vote for the winner between those final three.

Thanks
MNHQ

Thanks for the clarification.

GMFLondon · 09/10/2018 14:41

Well done Celia Hammond Animal Trust! I'm a big fan of CHAT, we fostered then adopted our little rescued cat family from them years ago - right now I'm looking at the three of them sprawled in a puddle of sunshine.

Hope CHAT wins the final round, will be watching out for the opportunity to cast my vote for them.
