This activity is now closed

If you have experienced a urinary tract infection (UTI) then you’ll know how uncomfortable and painful they can be. There can be quite a few different causes of UTIs, as well as ways to treat and/or prevent them, which is why Ocean Spray would love you to share your methods for treating or preventing them.

Here’s what Ocean Spray have to say: “One in every two women will suffer from a UTI at some point in their lifetime. Many GPs and other health professionals advise women (as well as men) to drink cranberry juice for UTI resistance. Independent research has found drinking a glass of cranberry juice every day could help reduce the likelihood of a UTI by 40 percent, potentially cutting down on antibiotics use in the process. Which is good news particularly when experts claim antibiotic resistance is on track to kill more people than cancer.

Ocean Spray’s research into the health benefits of cranberries and cranberry juice is ongoing. And it’s always good to hear from people about their own experiences of drinking cranberry juice for health – and of course taste – reasons.”

Do you use a hot water bottle to comfort the stomach or back pain you may get? Perhaps you try to always wear breathable clothing around your lady parts to try prevent a UTI from occuring? Maybe you swear by the home remedy of drinking lots of cranberry juice? Or have you found the perfect no-perfume body wash that helps keep everything balanced?

Whatever your tips and methods are, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

Don't combine getting dehydrated with DTD! Drink lots of water and pee straight after DTD. Take cranberry capsules daily. If symptoms show, I will drink cran diluted with water and most times that will stop it in its tracks. If not then doc for antibios.

water and a trip to the drs

If you get frequent UTIs, keep on a cranberry pill. Drink lots of water and pure cranberry juice. Always urinate after six to prevent them. If it is a true UTI you need antibiotics but sometimes it may feel like UTI but could be a yeast infection ...the urine hits the skin and causes burning..or ir chronic...could be a condition called Interstitial cystitis and antibiotics wont help this. Cranberry makes it worse. You need to follow special diet and sometimes treatment with a special flush of bladder called a rescue treatment and medicine.

Drinking lots of water and making sure you empty your bladder completely.

Rocioo · 28/08/2018 09:46

Definitely drinking loads of water helps, wearing comfy clothes as well as simply relaxing with a cup of tea.

A big dose of Hiprex which is only available on prescription but really magical

No real tips as I don't often get them but did recently have what i thought was one but what was actually a kidney infection.

Flipping painful and drinking water helped that too but only antibiotics got rid of it. Came on within a few hours - from feeling perfectly fine to peeing thick red blood within 3 hours. If I had assumed it was a UTI I wouldn't have gone directly to a GP and would have probably been hospitalised that weekend. I've had many painful things, c sections, appendix burst and late (and early) miscarriages but this was the worst in terms of pain. However it was also the quickest to sort out with antibiotics.

Plenty of water to flush the nasties through!

NotZenEnough · 28/08/2018 22:34

Experience of treating DD who suffers.
Lots of water. LOTS!
Cut out sugar until it's better as sugar feeds the bacteria responsible for the UTI.
Cranberry juice is helpful but it must be one with no added sugar, I.e. not ocean spray. The taste is sour but you get used to it.

GetKnitted · 28/08/2018 23:00

lots of water and cranberry juice. but unfortunately, this means that I don't buy it at basically any other time, sorry!

Blainalass · 29/08/2018 14:39

Keep track of water - make sure you drink a target amount

mishknight · 29/08/2018 21:55

Drinking plenty of fluids to flush it out

angiehoggett · 30/08/2018 13:27

Drinking water to make sure you flush out toxins, I never drank enough so I got myself a 500ml stainless steel water bottle to keep on my desk. I can keep track of how many I've drunk and make sure to keep sipping through the day.

EmilyK83 · 31/08/2018 07:34

Definitely find that cranberry juice works for me! And drinking lots of fluids generally, to try and flush it out quicker...

Drink lots of water or juice and get comfy with a duvet and hot water bottle.

kkhimji · 31/08/2018 23:48

Drinking plenty of fluids

SSCRASE123 · 01/09/2018 12:12

Fortunately not something I have had to deal with but general cleanliness and hydration are followed by us all.

PickyPips · 01/09/2018 15:58

I used to work with a pharmacist who gave patients the advice of sitting on the toilet, not moving and drinking glass after glass of water to flush the infection out! I don't think this advice of not moving off the toilet was literal, but I have taken the advice of drinking lots more water than I would do normally and it does work! I do usually turn to cranberry juice too, I'm not keen on taking antibiotics, so will use anything natural first.

yorkie18 · 01/09/2018 19:53

Lots of fluids, loose clothing and fresh fruit seems to help me too

MrRichTea · 02/09/2018 16:04

Plenty of water, nothing to acidic

Dee123B · 02/09/2018 16:52

Get an antibiotic!

Mariobug25 · 02/09/2018 22:47

Avoid anything acidy like the plague! Of course stock up on “proper” cranberry juice (not the cocktail kind!) and get some antibiotics as soon as possible!

jazzitup · 03/09/2018 09:53

Try to drink pleanty of water and use a neutral soap not perfumed.
