Potty training can feel like a daunting task that consists of tantrums, tears and mess. With so many different products and advice out there it can be difficult to know where to start. Potty training is a great milestone to be celebrated as your child takes a big step towards become a big girl or boy. The potty training experts at Huggies® Pull-Ups® would love to know your best tips and tricks for an easy transition to the toilet.

Here’s what HUGGIES® have to say: “Trusted by millions of parents and carers around the world, HUGGIES® Pull Ups® Potty Training underwear supplies all the features you need to train in a safe and consistent way. Take a look at our steps to potty training success here

“Perhaps the biggest achievement in potty success is recognising the need to go. To help little ones on this journey, when little accidents happen, the unique learning layer in Huggies® Pull-Ups® briefly mimics the feeling of real wet underwear, before quickly drawing the moisture away. It’s a feature of the product that many people don’t realise exists, but it’s one of the best tips for helping little ones learn wet from dry in a protected environment, so that they ultimately learn to stay dry on their own and can progress to pants quicker.”

Perhaps you’ve found training pants to be your potty training saviour? Maybe you have a potty both upstairs and downstairs so that you’re ready for anything? Or is your biggest tip to just let your little one take control?

Whatever your best tip and trick for potty training, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one winner will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

Showed lots of patience an encouragement so as not to cause shyness. I demonstrated to my dc by pretending to be a little girl and used the potty. After a while she copied me and it was almost plain sailing from then on

phillie1 · 12/08/2018 09:49

Get mother in law to do it, whilst you are away for a few days. I was mad as hell with her, when she did this, without asking at the time, but looking back, made my life much easier!

007hel · 12/08/2018 09:55

This weather would have been fab for potty training !!! I would always potty train in the summer months, if they're not ready leave it a couple of weeks and try again.

amyhalliday1 · 12/08/2018 09:58

Patience ! But also don’t listen to other mums go at your own pace x

1836Aa · 12/08/2018 10:02

Perseverance! Do not wait till the child is "ready", the age at which children are potty trained has risen by more than a year in the last 30 years. Do NOT use pull-ups, its confusing for the child.

pandoraskids · 12/08/2018 10:13

We did the potty training in the spring, kids could run around the house with no pants, potty in the bathroom next to the toilet

Caillou · 12/08/2018 10:15

Wait for as long as you want and don't rush it,

As picked it up in 2 days as we waited and within 2 weeks she was also dry at night, she was 2.10

SillyMoomin · 12/08/2018 10:19

Let the dc lead, but with prompts from us at “standard” times to ask- ie, when leaving the house “try the toilet” or before a long car journey “try the toilet”

maryandbuzz1 · 12/08/2018 10:21

I haven’t any easy solutions although I think each child has a right time and some are not ready when you expect them to be.
Choosing a time when you have me to spend and they are ready seemed to work for us.

juju3 · 12/08/2018 10:30

Don't try and force the pace but be encouraging

Goingovertosusanshouse · 12/08/2018 10:39

We went straight to the toilet rather than potty. Did it over the summer so could be nappyless outside.

lovemyflipflops · 12/08/2018 10:48

In my experience you will know instinctively when they are ready, so my tip is for number twos - they will feel the urge and know, encourage them to poo on the potty (or toilet with a little step and toilet seat) they will feel so pleased when you praise them, for pees, I found that wearing pull ups and pulling down (like grown up pants) at regular intervals reinforces the habit of peeing on a potty or toilet (I would leave standing up pees for a much later date !)

Montydoo · 12/08/2018 10:55

My tip is to use a book a reading time - I used Pirate Pete's Potty (there's a princess one too ) and make the experience fun, ask them if they would like to use the potty, if they don't - they are not ready, just try again in a couple of weeks. I read the book several times, at first my DS did not want to sit on the potty, but after some encouragement, and after the first little pee and lots of clapping and smiling we were well on our way, the pull-ups helped as he was able to pull down and up for peeing, when pooing we just went straight to the toilet, and used wet wipes for cleaning, before heading for toilet paper. We also made sure hand washing was part of the routine too. Its an important landmark in any child's routine, and with praise, patience should be a quick learning experience for you all.

emmav6 · 12/08/2018 11:07

we left the toilet seat/potty available for my daughter to choose when she wanted to use them. We also involved her in choosing new pants to wear so she enjoys putting them on in the day

ThemisA · 12/08/2018 11:09

Once they know they are going in their nappy and can tell you, they are probably ready to potty train. Get them on board and explain what you want, don't make a fuss about accidents (wait until you are not too stressed). Make sitting on the potty fun ie. read to them, make up a story etc. One child I knew couldn't cope without the feel of the nappy so the parents had to line the potty with a nappy so be creative and do not buy into any competitiveness with other parents.

finleypop · 12/08/2018 11:29

Don't be shy. Let them see you use the toilet regularly, they will want to emulate mum & dad

lynsmagoo · 12/08/2018 11:35

bribery! chocolate buttons is a must. everytime they use the potty give them a reward! doesnt take them long to get the hang of it

nettymay · 12/08/2018 11:42

Our 2 boys always had potties in front of the tv for their little programme and they seemed to get potty trained that way - going to the loo at that particular time.

sammie1884 · 12/08/2018 11:44

Stickers were key in potty training my two. After they got to 30 stickers I let them choose a magazine. At night I put pants on and then a pull up nappy for a while so they would know if they had an accident.

helly01pbo · 12/08/2018 11:47

I think the best tip is not to go back and give up. Once you've begun the potty training, stick with it and be persistent. You'll get there eventually!

liz1970 · 12/08/2018 12:00

Use pant and give them lots of praise when they use the potty, easiest to potty train in the summer too, whilst they are outside :)

andywedge · 12/08/2018 12:03

Have the potty there, so they can see it and are used to it - they'll want to use it themselves

devito92 · 12/08/2018 12:28

No pressure just get then to go in the loo with you ket them have the nappy off and get them to enjoy the feeing of being free.

foxessocks · 12/08/2018 12:28

Wait until they're ready and then just go for it, if you realise they aren't ready stop and try again in a month or so. We didn't use pull ups but they are handy at night. And we didn't really use a potty to be honest just held onto the toilet until they could hold themselves on. Always have spare clothes with you so there's no worries if an accident happens.

bevmichelle47 · 12/08/2018 12:40

I let them decide when they're ready and they pick the potty they feel more comfortable with. Don't make a big thing of it if they're not ready. There's plenty of story books that include using the potty that gets them interested.
