Potty training can feel like a daunting task that consists of tantrums, tears and mess. With so many different products and advice out there it can be difficult to know where to start. Potty training is a great milestone to be celebrated as your child takes a big step towards become a big girl or boy. The potty training experts at Huggies® Pull-Ups® would love to know your best tips and tricks for an easy transition to the toilet.

Here’s what HUGGIES® have to say: “Trusted by millions of parents and carers around the world, HUGGIES® Pull Ups® Potty Training underwear supplies all the features you need to train in a safe and consistent way. Take a look at our steps to potty training success here

“Perhaps the biggest achievement in potty success is recognising the need to go. To help little ones on this journey, when little accidents happen, the unique learning layer in Huggies® Pull-Ups® briefly mimics the feeling of real wet underwear, before quickly drawing the moisture away. It’s a feature of the product that many people don’t realise exists, but it’s one of the best tips for helping little ones learn wet from dry in a protected environment, so that they ultimately learn to stay dry on their own and can progress to pants quicker.”

Perhaps you’ve found training pants to be your potty training saviour? Maybe you have a potty both upstairs and downstairs so that you’re ready for anything? Or is your biggest tip to just let your little one take control?

Whatever your best tip and trick for potty training, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one winner will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

Stickers on the potty for success.

Lheath · 12/08/2018 12:54

Read books and let them watch cartoons on the potty to get them used to using it

jen1984j · 12/08/2018 13:22

I found using a reward chart really helpful

KingBobra · 12/08/2018 13:53

I'd say that actually, if you start the process and it's not working, it's fine to give up and try again later. Potty training took less than 3 days when the DC were ready for it.

glenka · 12/08/2018 13:59

always wait until you think they are ready to start and dont think you have to start just because other children their age are doing it. and make sure they never feel under any pressure to have to so.

LeeR1985 · 12/08/2018 14:35

I found it easier to have multiple potties in the house so if my daughter felt like she needed to go, she didnt have to rush up or down the stairs. Thankfully only had a couple of minor incidents but that was it

maureen3733 · 12/08/2018 14:58

patience is the key. dont pressure your child let them take their own time and coruse

compy99 · 12/08/2018 15:05

don't panic if it takes longer than you think, they will get there in the end. stickers and musical potties can help

glennamy · 12/08/2018 15:07

Don't force the issue or make it a big deal... I found with ED she wanted to use the potty, which was one you could then later place onto the toilet as she wanted to go the same way as we did... My only tip is when they have used the potty grab it and empty/clean it immediately as ED was once very proud and wanted to show us her efforts and it was spilt over the floor! ;)

TRY TO START IN THE SUMMER WHEN THE NAPPY CAN BE OFF - LET THEM PLAY IN THE GARDEN NAPPYLESS AND HAVE A POTTY TO HAND

CGORST · 12/08/2018 15:17

I bought a potty early on and left it with all the other baby things, so it became part of the furniture. It was then less of an issue when we started potty training because the potty had been there from day one!

AHobbyaweek · 12/08/2018 15:26

I had missed the "ready" signs and think we waited too long. My DD got it and understood the feeling and what to do the first day and it was great but the second day refused to use the potty. We had a 40 minute standoff waiting for her to use the potty as she refused even though she needed to.

My tip is to get the timing right, don't wait until you have a deadline.

sophiefx · 12/08/2018 15:43

Use reward stickers!

feefeegabor · 12/08/2018 15:53

My daughter coped with potty training really well and I think it was because I used the washable nappies. They were never as "dry" as the throwaway kind and she didn't like being wet. She learnt that very quickly and as a result, potty training was pretty fast!

JoJoY · 12/08/2018 15:53

For a little boy put a cherrio in the bowl/potty for them to aim at.

sallyhartley · 12/08/2018 15:59

i found using kids animated potty stories on you tube helped me. letting them run around with no nappy on for a bit with the potty close by.

Visioncroquet · 12/08/2018 16:05

A sticker book worked for us

RosaMallory · 12/08/2018 16:30

Pull ups and sitting on the potty an hour after drinking. Massive praise when performed on the potty.
Throwing away Gina Ford's potty training book. She suggested that you put the child in pants straight away. I couldn't cope with the constant weeing and pooing on the floor. It's a stupid idea to begin with as a child has to learn what the wee or poo feeling is. It's part of the interoceptive sense.

Cyw2018 · 12/08/2018 16:38

I've started sitting my 6 month old on the potty in front of cartoons for half an hour first thing in the morning. 10 days in and caught all her poo's this way, and a few wee's as a bonus. She is much happier too, as previously her poo's had to be "rattled" out of her either in the car or a bumpy pushchair ride, I don't think she has ever really liked going for a poo in her nappy.

dadshere · 12/08/2018 17:18

Motivate them with charts and regular rewards, and never punish an accident!

xcxcsophiexcxc · 12/08/2018 17:23

Waiting til they have a good understanding makes life so much easier ! Also don’t start soon before going on holiday !

Shuggas · 12/08/2018 17:26

Definitely wait, don't be pressured by others to start, it can be traumatic all around if not ready. I did it too early with my 1st and waited much longer for second.. completely different experience

jatsmith · 12/08/2018 17:53

I'd say don't stress about it. All kids will get there in their own time. Don't compare your child with others as they all develop at their own rate and they'll let you know themselves when they're ready to start using the potty.

IonaAilidh11 · 12/08/2018 18:15

wait until they show signs of wanting to use the toilet then praise them for trying

JoJoBaldwin · 12/08/2018 18:16

I left the potty in each room to normalise it, then read DD a picture book all about a little girl learning to use the potty. She then took herself off to the potty for a wee and was very proud of herself!
