Potty training can feel like a daunting task that consists of tantrums, tears and mess. With so many different products and advice out there it can be difficult to know where to start. Potty training is a great milestone to be celebrated as your child takes a big step towards become a big girl or boy. The potty training experts at Huggies® Pull-Ups® would love to know your best tips and tricks for an easy transition to the toilet.

Here’s what HUGGIES® have to say: “Trusted by millions of parents and carers around the world, HUGGIES® Pull Ups® Potty Training underwear supplies all the features you need to train in a safe and consistent way. Take a look at our steps to potty training success here

“Perhaps the biggest achievement in potty success is recognising the need to go. To help little ones on this journey, when little accidents happen, the unique learning layer in Huggies® Pull-Ups® briefly mimics the feeling of real wet underwear, before quickly drawing the moisture away. It’s a feature of the product that many people don’t realise exists, but it’s one of the best tips for helping little ones learn wet from dry in a protected environment, so that they ultimately learn to stay dry on their own and can progress to pants quicker.”

Perhaps you’ve found training pants to be your potty training saviour? Maybe you have a potty both upstairs and downstairs so that you’re ready for anything? Or is your biggest tip to just let your little one take control?

Whatever your best tip and trick for potty training, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one winner will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

Too many people start this too soon before child knows they need to go or can even communicate. Just leads to frustration and prolonged potty training. Really wait til child is ready. It's makes it much shorter!

We found a brilliant potty which played music when my son sat on it. It worked like a dream!

KAKADU2001 · 12/08/2018 07:00

Start them young make it fun. All of our 4 children were potty trained before they were eighteen months old. It's about putting some time and effort in as a parent.

Cl90 · 12/08/2018 07:20

Don’t be afraid to use incentives or rewards. We found wet nappies very easy to eliminate but the dirty ones were the difficulty.

We used to reward our son or ( initially each other as he would never do it) every time he used the toilet. This was usually a grape, a sweet, a trip to the park or an episode of fireman Sam.

Spices001 · 12/08/2018 07:25

The potty song ensured we never had an accident;-)

caralianne · 12/08/2018 07:51

It really is about waiting until they are ready, if you try it before it is tears and frustration all round. My son is taking a lot longer to be ready than my daughters were but its ok, he will get there eventually

Lydiag1 · 12/08/2018 07:54

We had three potatoes around the house , we put Disney posters next to them and made each potty area a little den so it was exciting to go in there when he needed to go to the toilet , it worked a treat , he was trained really quickly

Lydiag1 · 12/08/2018 07:55

Potties not potatoes 🙈

RiSo · 12/08/2018 08:12

Wait til they are ready! All 3 of my boys were clean and dry, day and night within a week. I did all 3 boys by letting them go nappy free and staying in for a few days so did the younger two in school holidays. A couple of accidents of weeing on the floor and they quickly grasped they had to go to the potty to do it. The youngest bypassed the potty and went straight for the toilet like his big brothers though!

vonniebab2 · 12/08/2018 08:13

Summer is a good time no pants or nappies potty at the ready lots of patience and when they are ready it will happen!

tallandlong · 12/08/2018 08:23

go from nappies to underwear, not pull ups and loads of patients

Clairecricket1 · 12/08/2018 08:27

we bought a novelty looking potty which my little ones seem to enjoy using

Lindseymorris29 · 12/08/2018 08:30

Waiting till they understand needing the toilet and can communicate the fact. Lots of stickers, a cool potty and lots of patience.

SSCRASE123 · 12/08/2018 08:39

Don't pressure them, it will happen when they are ready and it will be so much more difficult if they get nervous and scared of the loo.

tabbaz123 · 12/08/2018 08:41

Every child is different and 'ready' at different ages/stages so it is really hard to have any rules in potty training but I do try to keep it a casual, no big deal kind of thing. I think if under pressure this can make it worse for the child. Lots of praise and LOTS AND LOTS of underwear, wipes and cleaning solution :)

AR2012 · 12/08/2018 08:43

Always have a nappy on hand until they are confident on using the loo. Accidents will happen.

abby12321 · 12/08/2018 08:48

Wait until they are ready!! So many people stress about it but it’s hard if their too young

abby12321 · 12/08/2018 08:49

**They’re not their

happysouls · 12/08/2018 08:56

Staying calm and consistent no matter what! It can be very inconvenient but if you're prepared and take your time that helps. You just need to work out how to go about daily life while doing it!

wonderstuff16 · 12/08/2018 09:05

Try not to nag them too much by asking them every two minutes if they need a wee. It's good for them to have accidents in order to learn how to potty train.

allumsadventures · 12/08/2018 09:12

Wait until they are ready, they need to be aware of bowel movements to be able to grasp potty training.

When helping childminding children I tend to try and get them used to both potty and toilet with a seat. Otherwise once they are trained some children won't use the toilet only a potty! This can be challenging.

Emilygage1982 · 12/08/2018 09:22

Be consistent and don’t give up

kittykomp · 12/08/2018 09:28

don't force it, it will happen when the time is right

Marg2k8 · 12/08/2018 09:31
  1. Don't get stressed about it.
  1. Keep a potty in the living room for ages before and when the child asks about it, say "that's for when you are a big boy/girl". They will be curious and want to use it.
Dormouse1940 · 12/08/2018 09:47

RELAX!
Honestly, some people get so stressed that their child is still in nappies when X down the road has been dry day and night from 18 months...
When your child is getting ready to move on from nappies, they'll begin to let you know, either by showing more interest in the toilet or by becoming more aware when they wet.
When in the house just let your kids run round in the nude or pants- sure you might have to mop up a few accidents but they'll quickly get the hang of it and being nappy-free helps them to recognise when they're going.
But mostly, don't get hung up about it. If it makes you stressed it'll become negative for your child. Try keep it relaxed and use heaps of positive praise when they do make it to the potty/toilet in time!
