With laundry stacked high and always increasing, it can be tempting to break even the most basic of laundry rules in order to keep on top of the task. Fairy Non Bio would like to hear about the rules you implement (or ignore!) when you’re doing the laundry.

Here’s what Fairy has to say: “We want to know what’s important to you. Have you found a way to save time? A way to get the best stain removal? A way to keep clothes huggably soft? Or even just a way to not lose matching socks! We would love to hear your tricks of the trade.”

What’s your perspective on laundry rules? Either way, Fairy Non Bio wants to know. Do you obey temperature regulations or simply stick everything in at 40? Perhaps you’re the kind of person who avoids overfilling and never fails to air-dry fine fabrics. Or, maybe you fill the machine to the brim and adopt a one size fits all approach to drying that would make manufacturers weep. Whatever they may be, divulge your laundry indiscretions.

Share the rules that you follow and those you ignore on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

If an item says "dry-clean only" and it looks sturdy enough to tolerate a delicate wash, I normally risk it. There's only been one time this did not work out.

vonniebab2 · 16/04/2018 08:08

I always wash my whites and darks separate, and always wash my sheets and towels on a hot wash

Narnianescape · 16/04/2018 08:14

Everything but whites go in the machine together

xcxcsophiexcxc · 16/04/2018 08:19

It's definitely a free for all in this house , though I try not to mix my red and whites !

Catmadroo · 16/04/2018 08:19

I try and get as much washing in one load as possible though I do try to separate whites and darks, all washed on same synthetic cycle at 40 degrees. Can't understand why we have so many cycles on machines why make it so complicated!

ptak5566 · 16/04/2018 08:35

I do separate colour washes to avoid colour runs and usually on 40. Always do bedding on 60 wash as I've heard this kills any bed bugs and mites. Like to put outside to dry when can as always smell so much fresher but do like to finish towels off in tumble drier just to soften up.

Babo1 · 16/04/2018 08:36

I wash most clothes at 40 degrees although all whites have to go in at 60 degrees. I try to use common sense with delicates but if am not sure I just turn it inside out and hope for the best Grin I have recently discovered though that handwashing can be actually quite quicker and better for not so dirty clothes especially on a good sunny/ windy day

happysouls · 16/04/2018 08:36

We find washing like with like works well so that each thing can be washed in the best way to suit it. As we have lots of space in the house we just have lots of clothes. So all socks can go together and make up a load, flannels etc It works well.

runkaterun · 16/04/2018 08:38

I try to follow what can go in the tumbler. But some labels say no when it just means they wont last as long rather than anything bad happening

KARINAJ83 · 16/04/2018 08:43

I try to wash most things at 30/40 apart from hubbys tops and bedding which usually gets boiled to death in the hopes of smelling nice Wink

Im quite good at sorting them but sometimes the odd bit slips in and we have very interesting coloured items in the end which either get binned or recycled into something new Blush The worst time is when a delicate gets put in a boil wash by accident and it is shrank to the size of my daughter! Obviously she is grateful...me not so much!

omgitslani · 16/04/2018 08:55

I try and separate colours, blacks, whites etc but in practise, sometimes this only means that the whites go separately and everything else is just lumped together! The washing machine is set to 40 degrees and I have never changed this, even though I know that I should for some items!

SSCRASE123 · 16/04/2018 09:01

I frequently ignore the hand-wash only instructions on some of my stuff. I know that eventually they will deteriorate but it doesn't do much harm. Always on a cool wash and I never tumble dry them though.

beanlucy21 · 16/04/2018 09:01

I wash mainly everything on 30 degrees so I do not need to keep to rules unless towels and bedding 60 - 90

Bellaboo1234 · 16/04/2018 09:11

I do a separate whites, darks and light colour wash, I don't mix darks and lights.
If things are not to dirty I will do them on a quick wash.

lotte321 · 16/04/2018 09:13

I mix some colours, I tumble things that say 'do not tumble dry'. Not had any issues. Yet!

lsymons · 16/04/2018 09:14

''' hand wash only '' Hmmmmm!! Maybe i should start following this rule

TheCakeIsNotALie · 16/04/2018 09:24

I always make sure to wash items marked 'hand-wash only' by hand and always sort the laundry by their colour(s).

I don’t wash towels with clothes at it makes clothes bobbly.
And I remove washing quickly and leave machine door open to keep it all smelling fresh.

AR2012 · 16/04/2018 09:25

delicates in with darks.

sunshinewey · 16/04/2018 09:26

I have three different piles, whites, colours and pale pastels, this is my own rule, and i think after the years you automatically know which fabric should go on which wash, so im on auto pilot!

glenka · 16/04/2018 09:31

i often mix coloured clothes with whites if im in a hurry and its usually alright.

Jade5093 · 16/04/2018 09:33

I always overload my washer. They all get clean and they don't get ruined.
. So I just ram them in 🤣🤣

emmav6 · 16/04/2018 09:53

bedding and OH's work stuff at 60, the rest is either 30 or 40 and the very few white items we have go separate :)

ThemisA · 16/04/2018 09:56

I try to use environmentally friendly and skin sensitive products. I try to wash when the sun is out so I can use solar. We wear clothes more than once to save washing and dry outside when possible. I do as little ironing as possible which means we do wear screwed up pajamas - the shame of it!

footdust · 16/04/2018 09:58

I'm fairly strict about my white wash. Only whites - no beiges or very light colours and "hand wash only" is a rule to be broken.

hiddenmichelle · 16/04/2018 09:59

Colours and white - i never seperate unless something is very brightly coloured and new - never had a problem!
