With laundry stacked high and always increasing, it can be tempting to break even the most basic of laundry rules in order to keep on top of the task. Fairy Non Bio would like to hear about the rules you implement (or ignore!) when you’re doing the laundry.

Here’s what Fairy has to say: “We want to know what’s important to you. Have you found a way to save time? A way to get the best stain removal? A way to keep clothes huggably soft? Or even just a way to not lose matching socks! We would love to hear your tricks of the trade.”

What’s your perspective on laundry rules? Either way, Fairy Non Bio wants to know. Do you obey temperature regulations or simply stick everything in at 40? Perhaps you’re the kind of person who avoids overfilling and never fails to air-dry fine fabrics. Or, maybe you fill the machine to the brim and adopt a one size fits all approach to drying that would make manufacturers weep. Whatever they may be, divulge your laundry indiscretions.

Share the rules that you follow and those you ignore on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

I do pales and darks separately but always use a colour catcher just in case. Most things on 40 but school uniform and general dirty kids clothes at 60

MrsO29 · 07/04/2018 09:28

I separate lights and darks and colours, do most on 40 but towels and bedding higher. Don't judge me, Greenpeace!
Hand wash gets hand washed and dry clean only gets dry cleaned.
Prefer to air dry all clothes outside on the line but not always possible. Don't own a tumble dryer!

PussCatTheGoldfish · 07/04/2018 09:47

Everything at 30 on a quick wash. Whites separate. That's it.

Kimmyb100 · 07/04/2018 10:05

Most goes on a 30 degree quick wash bit I do love bright crisp white bedding so 60 cotton wash for that.
I have been really brave and walked all of my sheepskins on a cold wash with fairy and they have come out beautifully soft and after a stretch and a good brush look like new

MakeTeaNotWar · 07/04/2018 10:23

Separate whites from colours
Bung everything in at 30
Do the odd handwash
Chuck everything in the tumble dryer afterwards

elizaco · 07/04/2018 10:59

I tend to stick to the rules, especially hand-wash only clothes. I do have a tendency to overfill the machine (although I was told that this was better for the machine than under-filling it?) and I do put trainers in - not sure that does the machine any good.

asuwere · 07/04/2018 11:31

Are there rules?!? I chuck everything in together, never had a problem so far :)

Sierra259 · 07/04/2018 12:08

I don't worry too much about separating white underwear/vests/teatowels etc. Sheets and towels go on at 60, everything else 30. I use a net bag for delicates and cuddly toys that are handwash or wipe clean only.

cabsav · 07/04/2018 12:22

I have an addiction to fabric conditioner 🤫. I'm obsessed with the stuff . I have tried just about every one there is . My all time favourites though are fairy( white one ) and lenor ( yellow one ) those are the ones I keep going back to .

GhostsToMonsoon · 07/04/2018 12:37

We normally bung everything in at 40, having separated lights and darks. Other than outdoor clothes or the picnic rug which get a special cool wash.

jacqui5366 · 07/04/2018 12:43

I stick to 40 for most things, towels, sheets and school clothes (I use a cupful of laundry cleanser and conditioner) I wash on a higher temp and tumble dry all of the socks and underwear. The laundry rule I always stick to is hand wash for woollens (after a rogue cashmere jumper was put in with the daily wash and came out 4 sizes smaller).

onemorecakeplease · 07/04/2018 13:58

Whites go in with Pales at 60
Everything else at 40
I use an eco egg and softener
Tumble dry towels bedding socks and pants and hand everything else up

Hate washing...

ClashCityRocker · 07/04/2018 14:56

Quick wash seems to be fine for most daily clothes.

I've also found that one tablet suffices rather than two for most things.

Tiddlywinks63 · 07/04/2018 17:03

Handwash clothing goes in on a delicates wash, in a net bag (which I also use when washing woollens on a Woolwash). Everything else goes on a Fastwash cycle at 30° and that seems to have worked perfectly well for the past 40 years! The only thing that ever got washed at 60° were the DC's towelling nappies yonks ago 😄

Amber0685 · 07/04/2018 17:47

I use less then the recommended amount of detergent and extra rinse, always. Sensitive skin here.

Treaclespongeandcustard · 07/04/2018 17:56

I tend to throw whites in on their own but everything else is a free for all Grin

jesseejohnston · 07/04/2018 19:06

I break every rule possible 😂
Everything is tumble dried, if I ruin it oops..
everything is on number 7 wash which is a 40 minute wash as it's the fastest one we've found and all the others are 4+ hours long!
We over fill the washing machine and we never separate colours whites and darks!

The only rule I've always followed is using fairy non bio on all our clothes because of our baby and it's a really good one so we will carry it on.

FlowerPotMum · 07/04/2018 19:16

Ohhh, I'm a stickler.. nothing other than whites with my whites and a good scoop of an oxy white powder ( any will do ). Pinks and lights together and darks together.
Not bothered about towels getting chucked in with whatever is in, as long as the colours match.
A good glug of comfort and jobs a good un 😀

ILikeBigBumpsAndICannotLie · 07/04/2018 19:37

A laundry bag for bras fastened on a cool wash. I really think they last longer and dont stretch out then. No other rules really other than separating things out, and double checking childrens pockets (for things like Easter eggs Easter Angry)

Petalflowers · 07/04/2018 20:33

Most things get washed at 40, bedding and towels at 60. I do tend to keep whites and colours separately, but if the odd white thing gets mixed up, i don’t fret. I tend to also sort things by ‘weights’, so will do all the heavy things (jeans, sweatshirts etc) together.

However, nothing is fixed in stone, and i’m Fairly flexible.

Petalflowers · 07/04/2018 20:40

Regarding drying, during the winter, towels, sheets, and some clothing goes into the tumble drier. However, sports stuff, thicker stuff etc that can’t be tumble-dried goes on the aired. We have a dehumidifier to,help dry these clothes.

In the summer, everything goes outside (weather permitting).

Theimpossiblegirl · 07/04/2018 21:17

I wash most things on a quick wash at 40, just to freshen them up really.
Towels and bedding get washed hot and I do a hot white wash once a week (school shirts etc.).
I don't break rules per se, I just make my own.
:)

NauticalDisaster · 07/04/2018 21:31

Recently i am just washing every load at 50 degrees; i don't even care what fabrics are in there!

mummymummums · 07/04/2018 21:37

I mostly ignore handwash only and put it in machine on gentle cycle.
The DC's fancy dress outfits go in the machine even though they say not to wash at all. But with a mostly white Buzz Lightyear costume one wear and it's fit for the bin. Have washed several and several and all were fine.
After a number of mishaps I don't mix light colours with anything else and I don't tumble dry wool.

MacNcheese87 · 07/04/2018 21:40

I tumble dry clothes on a high heat even when it states low heat only.

I'm not even sorry.
