Mumsnet users share with VELUX what they would do if they could extend their home

This activity is now closed

The UK isn’t exactly known for having warm, sunny weather so we often have to make the most of what we’ve got and try to make our homes feel as bright as possible...even on the rainiest of days. VELUX would like you to enter their Pinterest competition and hear the reasons why you would love to add a single-storey extension to your home.

Grant Sneddon, VELUX daylight expert says: “Many people tend to rely on glass doors such as bi-fold and patio doors to bring daylight into their extensions. However, as extension doors tend to be further away from the original room, natural daylight – even on the brightest of days – can’t penetrate very far into the house. VELUX roof windows are the answer. They let in twice as much daylight as vertical windows because the glazing is angled directly towards the sun.”

VELUX wants you to create your own home extension mood board on Pinterest with inspiration for creating a space that’s filled with natural daylight for you and your family to enjoy at home. Whatever you would do to bring daylight into your home extension, pin all your inspiration on your mood board and share it with VELUX.

Carefully follow the guidelines below.

1) Create a moodboard on Pinterest showing your inspiration for your home extension – but remember to think daylight! Include pins of light, airy, bright space and roof windows.
2) You can pin content from VELUX and anywhere else that inspires you. For inspiration, take a look at our own board here.
3) Tag your moodboard with #VELUXextensions
4) Then submit your board URL in the form here to enter

As well as creating your mood board, we would love you to share what your family would do if you could add a single-storey extension to your home. Do you have a particularly dark kitchen that you would love to open up to bring some natural light in so you can entertain friends and family? Perhaps you have a young family and want an extension that doubles as a playroom to allow you to watch over your little ones as you’re cooking or baking?

Everyone who creates and sends us a link to their mood board will be in with the chance of winning a £300 John lewis voucher. Plus all MNers who comment what they would do if they could extend their home, will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky winner will receive a £250 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and best of luck,
MNHQ

We would love a bigger front porch with lots of natural light as it's south facing and loads of storage and space for coats, buggies, scooters, shoes etc etc

I'd love to create a nice light summer room that would be perfect for just relaxing in with a good book and my pooch Maizie for company. My house is quite dark at the moment so adding some Velux magic is just the remedy!

We'd love to extend our hallway as it's pretty cramped. More light would be great & extra windows in an extension would make a big difference.

We have some brick outhouses at the back of our house- used to be an outside toilet and a shed but we’d love to transform these into a lovely playroom type area for the children. Currently, we don’t have a room in the house that hasn’t been taken over by children’s belongings but if we had a lovely extended playroom this would mean we could reclaim a room in our house for ourselves!

I would love some roof lights in my dark, miserable kitchen. I dream of sitting with a cup of coffee, with the light streaming in or even listening to the rain above me.

Love the light the Velux gives the spaces. I really want to extend all across the back of our house.

Meant to add, I would move the kitchen to the side walls and create a large dining space at one end and a big lounge space at the other. I would have doors opening out to the garden and two large Velux windows to make the space bright.Grin

I now know the names of nearly every person that put their Pinterest board on here. This thread is the most outing thread I've ever read. Did you all not care?

Theimpossiblegirl · 01/04/2018 23:25

That's why I haven't done the board. It's unfair that you can only enter if you out yourself or create a new pinterest account under a pseudonym.

However, I can do part 2. :)
If I could add an extension, I'd extend the garage up and make it into a 2-storey annex. I could let it out on airbnb or put my eldest DD (who claims she's never leaving home) into it.
Or move into it myself.

If I could extend our home I would make a games room! We would always have a room for entertaining and always have something to do on rainy days :)

Here’s my board. A crossover with my kitchen board!pin.it/zptxwi4otf6hdg

We are planning a new kitchen at the end of the year and I was dreading the cost of bifold but thought they’d be necessary to let the light in (I’ve recently seen some dark cabinets I’d love; but which may be too dark for the space).

Velux may just be the answer. A small extension with loads of roof light could create the perfect space. Don’t even mind if I win now, as at least I’ve got the answer to my kitchen design dilemma! ☺️

PussCatTheGoldfish · 02/04/2018 23:52

We've recently done an extension across the back of the house for our kitchen diner. Three Veluxes, a bifold and two windows. Honestly the best bit of work we've ever done to a house.

The Veluxes make the most difference light wise, so much so that we want to add them to one of the upstairs bedrooms which is very dark (sloping ceilings).

CathBookworm · 07/04/2018 16:53

I would LOVE to add an extension to the rear of our house-for more room which is badly needed and to let more light into the house.

Byrdie · 08/04/2018 15:19

A rear glass extension on our house would he amazing! We're looking into it plus two skylights in our lounge and one in the roof.

MrsFig · 08/04/2018 21:35

I would love to add a light and airy playroom to the rear of the house which could also double up as an office for days when I need to work from home.
