This activity is now closed

The UK isn’t exactly known for having warm, sunny weather so we often have to make the most of what we’ve got and try to make our homes feel as bright as possible...even on the rainiest of days. VELUX would like you to enter their Pinterest competition and hear the reasons why you would love to add a single-storey extension to your home.

Grant Sneddon, VELUX daylight expert says: “Many people tend to rely on glass doors such as bi-fold and patio doors to bring daylight into their extensions. However, as extension doors tend to be further away from the original room, natural daylight – even on the brightest of days – can’t penetrate very far into the house. VELUX roof windows are the answer. They let in twice as much daylight as vertical windows because the glazing is angled directly towards the sun.”

VELUX wants you to create your own home extension mood board on Pinterest with inspiration for creating a space that’s filled with natural daylight for you and your family to enjoy at home. Whatever you would do to bring daylight into your home extension, pin all your inspiration on your mood board and share it with VELUX.

Carefully follow the guidelines below.

1) Create a moodboard on Pinterest showing your inspiration for your home extension – but remember to think daylight! Include pins of light, airy, bright space and roof windows.
2) You can pin content from VELUX and anywhere else that inspires you. For inspiration, take a look at our own board here.
3) Tag your moodboard with #VELUXextensions
4) Then submit your board URL in the form here to enter

As well as creating your mood board, we would love you to share what your family would do if you could add a single-storey extension to your home. Do you have a particularly dark kitchen that you would love to open up to bring some natural light in so you can entertain friends and family? Perhaps you have a young family and want an extension that doubles as a playroom to allow you to watch over your little ones as you’re cooking or baking?

Everyone who creates and sends us a link to their mood board will be in with the chance of winning a £300 John lewis voucher. Plus all MNers who comment what they would do if they could extend their home, will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky winner will receive a £250 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and best of luck,
MNHQ

Thank you for fixing it!

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 14/03/2018 18:03

We currently have velux windows in our dining room ceiling, but I'd love to get rid of the windows in the dining room and replace them with bifold doors opening out into the garden.

It would mean that we wouldn't need to have a dining table in the garden as well as in the house as we'd have the perfect indoor/outdoors combination.

We don't need a lot of extra space added by an extension, but I loved the look of the glass boxes on the backs of houses. Very luxe!

Also coveting some velux blinds for the big velux window in our living room roof as it makes it hard to see the television in summer!

An extension on the back of the house from the dining room and kitchen overlooking the garden. Extra room for a playroom/ more dining space would be great.

Crumble67 · 15/03/2018 10:33

I would love to put a kitchen extension in to allow more light into the kitchen and create a kitchen diner that's like an extension to the garden, so that we could have a creative play area for the kids and grow our own veg and herbs www.pinterest.co.uk/roobarbncustard/veluxextensions-mumsnet/

Thank you for removing my pp xx (reposting without the link!!)

Dreaming of converting our loft into a bedroom and playroom for DD, so that she has her own quiet space (away from her little brother, as she puts it!!) Would love lots of storage as she's a little bit of a hoarder! Lots of light and a clear divide between the playroom half and bedroom half would be lovely! I also love the idea of a few exposed beams and DD loves pastel colours to give the space a rustic, cozy look. She also loves the idea of a cozy swing seat in there too.

We'll definitely keep dreaming and pinning!! 😍

Need more space for a big table to seat us all

So extension across the back of the house to make playroom /dining room

Into the loft would nice to make another bedroom and en suite

We would love to extend our house. With a basic budget we would have a single storey rear extension with a dining room, utility room and a downstairs loo. French windows on to the garden.

A little more money we could have the extension as a new kitchen and the dining room take the place of our current kitchen. Instead of a flat roof we could have some kind of gable roof with skylights.

cannotmakemymindup · 16/03/2018 10:57

I would love to have a kitchen and dining room extension. I am currently doing a lot of catering for friends and family mainly however hoping to get into it more commercially soon, however our kitchen limits what I can do.
A kitchen extension would be great for hosting meals in our our home plus for catering. More light in a kitchen would be amazing to as it's a small window in the kitchen directly although an open plan downstairs living area - would take better photos to of all the food I cook.
Would definitely have herbs growing in the kitchen, fresh makes such a difference. Plus having plants inside makes a house brighter instantly a little bit of outside inside.

We're pretty broke lol, and have four children, and live in a 2 bed home. We're happy as larry where we are, as we live in a really lovely village, with lots of friends and beautiful places to go, but I would love to have my own bedroom! As soon as babies 3 & 4 came along, we gave up our bedroom to make sure our two boys had one room, and our two girls had the other, and we decided to have the front room. We bought a Sofa bed, and its worked well for nearly 8 years!
But I do miss having a bed, I miss having wardrobes where my clothes can live lol, and if I could have an extra storey, knowing us, we would probably ensure all our children got a room each, and we'd still end up staying in our front room lol. It works, because we're a happy bunch, and as long as we have a roof over our heads and everyones safe, what more do you need? :-)

vixo · 16/03/2018 16:37

We'd love to put an extension on our kitchen so we could have an island and space for a sofa!

Hopezibah · 17/03/2018 15:15

Our "office" space is in an internal room with no natural light coming in. As my husband recently started working from home the lack of light has become an issue . Would love to have a single storey extension at the back to create into a new dedicated office space (the desk in the corner is currently shared with the playroom so piles of toys in the other corner). The natural light from velux Windows would mean not having to have artificial lights on all day long!

FrenchieMum2Be · 17/03/2018 22:07

If I could extend my home, I would do a 2 storey extension that gives us a large bright kitchen diner downstairs and a family-sized bathroom upstairs.

My Dream Extension

Love this competition! I have had such a good time putting my board together. My dream is to extend our Kitchen-diner so that we have a relaxed sitting area leading seamlessly into our back garden.

The Kitchen is in the North East corner of the house and so we would have to have something like Velux roof lights to enjoy light in the bigger room. I would prefer somewhere that was also cosy in winter and so I'm not after a traditional conservatory. I'd like the extension to feel like part of the house and not an add-on. There are some very good examples of the sort of thing I would really like to do. Light and airy looking with a smart modern feel.

I've got a vision of a modern settee and a coffee table with comfortable chairs. The dogs live in the kitchen with us so naturally would need somewhere achingly smart to reside, oh and I really need somewhere to put all my recipe books.

dilydaly · 20/03/2018 22:33

My dream is to extend the kitchen, I'd love to have an island in the kitchen but right now it just isn't big enough and although I could fit a small island in I wouldn't want it to look crammed in, I like open spaces so a bigger kitchen so I could have the best of both worlds would be brilliant. Another thing I'd do is have big patio doors so that I could have them open during the 2 weeks of the year we have sun :D

qate · 21/03/2018 11:57

I'd knock through/extend our kitchen and dining rooms, to make one large open plan kitchen-diner-family area which runs the full length of the back of the house. I'd include double glass doors out to the garden (for when the weather is nice), along with large windows (both to either side of the double doors and velux in the ceiling) to let us much natural light in as possible - always a bonus in Scotland in the winter given how gloomy it is!

Although I'd keep the room open plan, I'd carefully split out the areas into distinct sections - kitchen running into dining area running into a family sofa/playroom area. That way, I'd have room to add in a kitchen island (#kitchengoals - we just don't have space right now!) for extra storage and prep, and a breakfast bar; and an extendable dining table to seat 6/8 for when the family are over. At the far end, away from the kitchen, I'd have a cosy area - sofa/play area to be able to relax in while supervising dinner and for our baby son to move around in while supervised.

EasterRobin · 21/03/2018 18:16

I'm very jealous of my friends with dedicated playrooms for their DC so I'd love to add one of those. Somewhere with nothing breakable or sharp cornered so DD can spin spin spin around until she falls over without me panicking every time she does it.

Catabogus · 21/03/2018 21:38

We are about to embark on a large kitchen extension. The current kitchen is damp, dark (north facing), dated and dingy! The new planned kitchen will be much lighter, with VELUX windows, twice as many ordinary windows, a light coloured floor and light coloured units. Oh and space for the children to sit and chat/do homework/play while I cook. I can’t wait!

We’d love a single storey extension added on to the kitchen to bring in lots of natural daylight. Making a family room where I can watch my son play whilst i’m Cooking and more room to entertain whilst having family and friends round. It would just make such a massive difference to our family life Smile xxx

i would love any of these but the bathroom ones would be amazing

MrsFrTedCrilly · 23/03/2018 18:26

I would dearly love to amend the badly designed kitchen extension that I have by removing the stupid bifold doors, building a nice wall so it’s warm and putting a decent roof with some velux windows in for light and ventilation. As it is I have a green house in the summer and a freezer in winter..

KittySlicker · 27/03/2018 18:48

We are looking into an extension off the back of our house to create a combined kitchen/dining/living space. Light, airy and bringing the outdoors in - get to enjoy the views of the garden of feel part of it from inside. Roof windows will certainly feature - love rooms that are filled with light. Hubby definitely wants remote controlled ones (who am I to argue)?!

BellaVida · 28/03/2018 11:48

We would love to create a multi-use family space, by extending along the back of the house. It would be a single storey orangery style, to let maximum light in through the roof. It could also be used for entertaining, as it would open out on to the garden.

Pinklady1981 · 28/03/2018 13:29

A loft extension would be amazing for my boys!

I'd love to enter but a board would be outing. Id love an extension to open up a tiny kitchen into a family space. Great big windows on to the garden too, with the automatic blinds would be amazing
